Would this dress be at all practical/wearable?

I have seen this dress and think it’s gorgeous but it is very expensive and so would need to work for its money. My question is, is this a dress for wearing in real life or insta only? Big issue is the low neckline and wrap style. I usually avoid wrap dresses like the plague and I remember walking with my hand over my fanny to stop myself from flashing the world for most of the 90s in wrap skirts etc. I thought maybe with a lacy slip underneath it might work, or a plain one? Or should I just back away?

I think the style is fine. The wrap neckline isnt low at all. Im not keen on the prints personally but i definitely think the dress is very wearable.

PretABoire · 25/04/2018 08:36

That’s gorgeous. I’d go with a strategic safety pin instead of a slip

Looks like it could have cost a tenner from newlook... Sorry it's nice but it doesn't look like anything special and those type of dresses only look good if your super flat so take that into account as I don't know your body shape

MrsMariaPolouvicka · 25/04/2018 08:39

The low neckline and wrap style IS the dress so to speak. So if those aspects are your issue, plus you usually avoid wrap dresses like the plague, what exactly is it about the dress you are attracted to?

That dress is a proper wrap style by the looks of it i.e you put it on like a coat, wrap it round and button. Rather that a faux wrap which just has the external look and maybe a small open split. As the model is demonstrating, that dress will completely open up when you sit down, at any gust of wind, at anything you brush up against..

I wouldn't use a slip unless you want to change the entire look, and I think the two fabrics would cling to each other anyway.

I'd avoid it, there are plenty of ditsy print dresses out there as alternatives.

RatRolyPoly · 25/04/2018 08:39

Oh I love it, but I'm quite sure you could get something similar for much less money if you were unsure?

AnarchyKitty · 25/04/2018 08:39

I love it. If only I could work out price/sizes I'd buy it.

Swimminguphill · 25/04/2018 08:40

Pret I remember doing that back in the day. I works but I do remember pulling holes in my skirts and at £150 I can’t risk that. Usually they provide an extra button don’t they? Perhaps I could get a dressmaker to add one more. I am tall and looking at where the buttons end I think it could be fanny-flashing.

Rat have you seen anything like this? I love the slightly puffy sleeves and the v-neckline would balance out my broad shoulders...

It ya Very nice but I would have a problem WIth it as it is summery and poliéster, so sticky.

I saw some a similar shape is in Somerset in John Lewis. Recently. Also not cheap and didnt examine fabric but maybe worth a look.

Swimminguphill · 25/04/2018 08:43

BTW I am tall, athletic build and despite many body flaws blessed with a flat stomach (no bum either - I describe my body type as ‘an iPhone with boobs).

Thanks margaritas I will take a look. Btw I know with this dress I am paying for style not substance...

I love it.

WhiteBobbles · 25/04/2018 08:56

I like the style but I wouldn't pay that price for 100% polyester. I bet you can find something similar for better material and lower cost.

jammiebammie · 25/04/2018 08:56

I think it’s ok, definitely wearable but for that price I wouldn’t want to have to adjust a dress or add things for it to fit properly - I’d want to put it on and feel good!
Topshop, new look, ASOS and silk Fred all have very similar wrap ditsy print tea dresses. Perhaps it’s worthwhile buying a cheaper one in a similar style and see how you wear it before splashing on the dearer one?
Honest opinion? It’s nice but not worth the price - I could knock something similar up on my sewing machine. I normally don’t mind paying that price and up for dresses, but only if I feel good in it and will get the wear out of it - that one is only a polyester fabric too, which would annoy me tbh.

FindingNormal · 25/04/2018 08:56

Really like the top half but it looks a funny length on the model and risks looking a bit frumpy imo. Although flashing your nethers might distract from that!

jammiebammie · 25/04/2018 08:56

An iPhone with boobs Grin love it! 😂

botemp · 25/04/2018 08:58

Swimming, it's on eBay in a navy or white (last year's colours). I'll PM you the link if you're interested?

Swimminguphill · 25/04/2018 08:59

Yes please Botemp!

How does that model manage to be so slim with a smooth chest. I'm must be two sizes bigger but that dress would just highlight my bony boob-to-collarbone area.

My fat's all round my middle. It isn't fair. Lovely dress though.

LemonysSnicket · 25/04/2018 09:26

I think I’ve seen a similar one in topshop

AnnieOH1 · 25/04/2018 09:32

There's a lot of similar dresses on Amazon much much cheaper than that.

goose1964 · 25/04/2018 13:36

It's pretty but from bitter experience know that you only need the slightest breeze and the world sees your knickers

Swimminguphill · 25/04/2018 13:44

You’re right goose buying it would be a triumph of hope over experience

Baileystruffle · 25/04/2018 14:16

Its nice. I'd wear it to work. Would have to wear heels personally because of the length.
