How High Maintenance are you?

BanoffeeCheesecake · 22/04/2018 20:20

In terms of clothes/beauty/hair/looks of course!

I used to be higher maintenance when I was younger but I'm in my early forties now and I just can't be arsed. I always end up wearing jeans/shorts and vest tops or sports wear if I'm going running or to the gym.

I don't have my nails done anymore nor do I paint them myself - fingers or toes - as it always chips and looks worse. Hair is highlighted and cut every 6-8 weeks but just worn loose after being blasted with the dryer or worn in a messy bun. I do wear a bit of make up but only concealer, a bit of eye pencil, mascara and lip colour when I can be bothered to put it on.

I do exercise and try to eat healthily and so am slim and fairly toned but that's my only regular thing towards my looks that I do really apart from getting my hair done.

I hardly ever buy clothes anymore either as I can never find anything I like!

"0ccamsRazor"

An hour a day meditating and another hour exercising every day? Do you ever have time for anything else?

VladPutin · 23/04/2018 22:46

Thus is possibly the most boring thread I’ve ever been on. And I’ve been here for 15 years. hides

torthecatlady · 23/04/2018 22:51

I would say somewhere in the middle.
I'm trying to make more of an effort these days when I can be bothered!

Eyebrows waxed every 2-3 weeks
Whole bikini wax every 6 weeks
Hair dyed and trimmed every 5 weeks
Shave legs as often as I can be bothered. If it's hot weather (or for an occasion) I'll do it more often.
Nails every 2-3 weeks if I have spare money or a special occasion
Skincare mostly Clinique
Designer perfumes and some cheaper ones

My clothes are either primark, charity shops, outlets or sales. I have a capsule wardrobe. My clothing is worn until it is no longer acceptable to be seen in public. Saying that my coat is falling apart but it still does the job and I can't bear to part with it.Blush

I have designer and expensive jewellery only as gifts (and inherited) but wear fashion jewellery... and a nose ring.

I own about 6 pairs of shoes, I'd own more if my feet weren't so wide.

I like to buy a few good quality items rather than own loads.

ificouldwritealettertome · 23/04/2018 22:56

(Relatively) new mum here just returned to work so hair cut every 6 months, washed once a week on Sundays.

Bit of make up, food when I have time and exercise never so unhappy size 16 and often a total mess.

In uni I was a looker and I miss my old sexy self every day!

tadpole73 · 23/04/2018 23:01

pigmcpigface · 24/04/2018 08:22

Wow, I am seriously low maintenance compared to most of you guys. I have my hair done once every 4 months (but it's done very well, by an excellent salon). When I remember, I do my brows with tweezers.

My wardrobe consists of 3 dresses and 4 pairs of leggings. I buy whatever makeup is cheap in B&M and don't wear jewellery. Never had my nails (hand or feet) done in my entire life, or had any other beauty salon treatments either.

In my experience (and I say this as an overweight person), the way to look really glamorous is to be thin and extremely fit. You can then wear a bin bag and still look like the most glamorous person in the room.

0ccamsRazor · 24/04/2018 10:16

Gwenhwyfar Grin these activities help my MS, if I don't take responsibility for my health I end up spiraling downwards

Corkscrewbetty · 24/04/2018 10:29

tadpole73 - ha ha ! Fancy telling us how much your engagement ring cost. What a shame for you.

tierraJ · 24/04/2018 10:48

If I didn't wear glasses all the time I would love lash extensions as they look so glam but to be fair I probably can't afford them all the time anyway.

Lots of the younger women at work have lash extensions. Also they get their brows done but some look fake so it pays to be careful who does them.

I use a Clinique eyebrow pencil daily because I have sparse blonde eyebrows but would like to try microblading - I've seen examples of a local beauticians work with paler brows. It's about £300 though so I'm still deciding.

Also thinking of whitening my teeth again - I've got the trays & can buy the gel from my dentist.

I guess all this will make me high maintenance but I don't care.

tierraJ · 24/04/2018 10:52

Tadpole I envy you having a gym in the house as you can always work out in your pjs!!

I don't think the type of car you have makes you high maintenance it just means that you like cars, if I could drive I'd have a Golf R I think.

TheDailyMailLovesTheEUReally · 24/04/2018 11:46

Low maintenance - definitely!

I've blow dried my hair and put on some makeup this morning (tinted SPF, blush, mascara) for the first time in weeks. I am usually bare-faced and hair is left to dry naturally and then tied back. I do look after my skin though; SPF, acid toners and good oils and serums. Skin care is a mixture of cheap and spendy.

Clothes are usually from a supermarket. I do my own hands and feet but don't tend to wear polish on my fingernails as I do a lot of gardening.

Chipsahoy · 24/04/2018 16:55

Not sure exercise and eating right counts as high maintenance does it?

Hair trimmed once every 6 months
Otherwise I use Aldi shampoo and conditioner and dry it after.
Makeup is lily lilo and I wear foundation, blush and concealer. Plus chapstick.

I don't get eyebrows or nails done professionally, but do use clear nail polish on fingers and a colour on toes. I pluck any random hairs.

I shave my legs daily but consider this to be low maintenance. It takes a a fee seconds in the shower as my shampoo rinses out. If I don't do it daily, when I do do it, it takes time.

Clothes wise are from eBay mostly. I do like irregular choice shoes but have only ever received them as birthday or Xmas gifts.

Perfume is ghost. Jewelery isn't work more than a couple of 100 pounds at most.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/04/2018 19:27

Sorry to hear that Occams.

tadpole73 · 25/04/2018 23:10

tierra J - it's only a treadmill in a spare room, not gym. I'm not that lucky

SapphireSeptember · 26/04/2018 03:21

I love make up and nice clothes, but I'm not high maintenance.
I cut my hair myself once a year, don't dye it despite the grey hairs, don't pluck my eyebrows or do facials, don't shave or wax my legs, (underarms and facial fuzz are shaved when I remember, undercarriage gets trimmed every now and again,) and toenails are trimmed about once a month, but I don't paint them. I'm not allowed to wear nail polish at work, so only paint my nails when I'm off for a week, and I try to remember to keep my cuticles tidy and file jagged edges from my nails. Handcream is a must, because I'm always washing my hands at work.

Everything else, I shower every day and alternate between washing and conditioning my hair or giving myself a good scrub all over, cleanse and mosturise my face every day using Simple products for oily skin, wear deodorant (not anti-perspirant as that gives me a rash) and most of the time settle for body mist (So...? do some really lovely ones) instead of perfume, I wear that on special occasions.
Make up wise, foundation, concealer, primer, blusher and bronzer are all out, I'll occasionally use face powder though. I wear eyeshadow, eyeliner, lipstick or lipgloss, highlighter and sometimes mascara. I don't do my brows either, they're perfect the way they are.
I always seem overdressed for things, I'll be wearing a dress and everyone else will be in jeans. But I like to look nice, I wear skirts and dresses unless I'm at work, but I never wear high heels. Combat boots, sneakers or pointy toed boots are the things I wear. And I like to accessorise with lots of jewellery, scarves and bling.

NoraBarlow111 · 26/04/2018 08:35

I have a healthy lifestyle, homecooked food, lots of veg, lean meat etc. I drink lots of water and walk at least 7 kilometres a day.

I dabbled with make-up in my teenage years but found it annoying so never bothered with it again.
I have the beginnings of greying hair which I dye myself using professional products. The grey is mostly around my temples so I just mix a small amount to cover the area, one tube will last about a year.
I like short nails which I cut every week and file with a herome glass file.

I wax my own legs, summer only, using professional products.

Haircut about twice a year maybe. nivea face moisteriser and a bottle of body lotion a year for the summer. I have worn channel no 5 perfume from the age of 16 and is about the only expensive thing I indulge in.

Clothes wise, before I buy anything I always make sure its comfortable and versatile. I know what looks good on me and what to avoid and have a minimalist wardrobe which I love. I did a clothes audit to see what my entire wardrobe cost and it came to €1159.

NoraBarlow111 · 26/04/2018 08:39

make that €1269 as I bought a much needed pair of sandals on tuesday.

lasttimeround · 26/04/2018 09:12

Such a range! Im quite hit and miss on grooming in terms of the final touches. Make up depends and is quite sparing. I always moisturise my body but am not so good on consistency with facial skincare. Nails short sometimes clear polish.
Clothes I take more time with and find being thoughtful has paid off. For several years ive had a sort of minimalist capsule approach. Clothes go together easily. I shop strategically to fill gaps. I add interest with jewellery, make up, scarves but with clothibg go for basics in decent quality. My main base is navy i have a lovely yellow handbag and like the combination. I love having a clear out. Retrying clothes, getting things altered so i look how i like. I look put together in terms of colours and cuts. When i have time and do make up and nails properly it steps it up a notch but with the basics in place its easy upkeep with the odd overhaul.

Dandellion · 26/04/2018 12:27

I never think I'm that high maintenance until I chat with my friends and hear how little personal grooming they do.

I take care of my skin by double cleansing every night, use retinol 2-3 times a week and a Kiehl's 50 SPF moisturiser every day.

I have a forearm, bikini and half leg wax every 6 weeks. Have eyelash and eyebrow tint every 6 weeks too.

Professional pedicure once a month, and rub footcream in every night before bed. Have a Shellac manicure quite often and in-between keep my nails neat and buffed. I rub in hand cream several times a day and cuticle cream every night.

I have had my teeth professionally whitened, and have my hair cut at a good quality salon every 6 weeks. I use Aveda hair products because they're the best.

I wear make up every day, but just a sheer foundation, concealer, blush, mascara and tinted lip balm. If I'm going out then I add in eyeshadow, eyeliner and a brighter lipstick. It wouldn't occur to me to ever go out barefaced.

I wear expensive perfume every day, even if I'm just chilling at home.

I enjoy pampering myself, it's good for my ego and I know my DH really appreciates that I always look good.

trigger2 · 26/04/2018 13:05

Low-ish maintenance here also.

Cut & colour every 6 weeks. Other than that my skin care is a mishmash of Lidl, Simple, Avene & Ren, my daily routine is cleanse moisturise and suncream with some mascara.

I keep my nails short because they’re soft and bend, sometimes I paint them with clear polish.

I do my own waxing, tweezing etc. Clothes & accessories another mishmash of M&S, Asda, next, although if I had the budget this would definitely change.

trigger2 · 26/04/2018 13:09

Forgot to add perfume - wear every day, I do like Chanel perfumes. Although my new favourite is a Lidl copy of Lancôme La belle es vie.

Prettylovely · 26/04/2018 13:13

I would spend more on clothing but I hate alot of the clothing in the shops these days I find my self going around clothing shops hating most of it as its just so ugly.

0ccamsRazor · 26/04/2018 13:54

Ah yes perfume! Channel no 5 every day since I was 21, does anyone else have a signature/daily scent?

When ever I smell anais-anais I am reminded of my lovely grandmother. It is funny how just a whiff of a perfume or aftershave can alert the memory.
