Where are men in their 40s supposed to shop?

DH is not very interested in clothes but needs something a bit more stylish for work. Doesn’t need formal wear. Needs to be smarter than trainers/jeans/t shirt. He’s too old for ASOS, too young for M&S. Where’s the middle ground?

GAP, Levis, Ted Baker.

I do a dash round John Lewis for DH. Also buy jumpers from the men's bit in Pure and belts etc. from Paul Smith.
I buy (and pay for) all his clobber otherwise he'd be a state - has zero interest in clothes whereas I love them.
He is my dress-up dolly Blush

Best way is to dump the idea that clothes (let alone retailers) map to you age.

I suggest he gets a good navy blazer (which could well be M&S) some chinos (Uniqlo, any department store), one of the cheap surprisingly good suits from Asda in case he needs a formal day. Mix of shirts from supermarket and properly tailors. A pair of Oxfords from somewhere like Churches (they'll last for absolutely ages)

CountFosco · 22/04/2018 11:53

DH has got a lot of stuff from Uniqlo. He's short and slim so the fact they are small is brilliant for him (he wears small or extra small from there). The quality is fantastic for the price.

My dad is in his early 50s and shops at topman, river island, occasional primarni tee, tk maxx for jeans etc. Most places do clothes that suit all ages.

Bodicea · 22/04/2018 12:01

Reiss, Zara, french connection

MaryMandala · 22/04/2018 12:02

Oh forgot about Zara!

DameDoom · 22/04/2018 12:11

Uniqlo is good and Reiss do a very good quality men's shirt ( I find the womenswear has gone right down the pan but we do have a really small Reiss here).
The only thing DH finds remotely interesting, sartorially speaking, is trainers. He takes an unhealthy interest in Damon Albarn-style 90's shockers.

Mulberrysilk · 22/04/2018 12:17

Dh buys all his casual work clothes from Tommy Hilfiger. It suits him to just go to one shop and then call it a day. He has no interest in shopping.

M&Co. They have some really nice mensw

Gillybobs · 22/04/2018 15:31

Massimo Dutti is another lovely high street brand for men.

SluttyButty · 22/04/2018 15:55

Crew clothing do some nice bits as does Boden.

I'm virtually in this bracket (turning 40 very soon). My staples are:

Reiss
Ted Baker
DKNY
Hugo Boss
Hackett
Eton or Fisk of Oslo for shirts
SuitSupply for suits (although more recently I tend to buy old suits from vintage and charity shops and have them tailored and relined)

  • Church's, Crockett & Jones and Kurt Geiger for shoes New Balance trainers (but I'm not really a trainers person as I wear them for work)
TestingTestingWonTooFree · 22/04/2018 19:57

Thanks all! There’s some new shops and forgotten ones there.
