Any trouser / jeans recommendations for a huge pear-shaped arse and wobbly thighs?

Just want some normal-ish casual trousers / jeans that suit my shape but can't frigging find any.

I own a couple of pairs of size 16 boarding-type trousers / boot-cut black cotton trousers which fit fine, but every time I have been shopping recently the size 16s don't fit at all, even when I go up a size they seem to stretch and cling horribly to the mounds of cellulite right down to my knees (sorry, gross but true).

Cropped is out (fat ankles) and don't even want to go there with skinny fit. I suppose what I'm looking for is something with a fairly wide leg in a not too clingy and stretchy material.

My usual haunts are Next, M&S and Gap but maybe I'm not looking on the right rails or need another shop altogether.

Any recommendations would be great (apart from 'get yourself a large kaftan and have done with it' obviously as I have already thought of this myself ).

have you tried Gap Long and Lean? they are perhaps clingier than you envisaged but def worth a pop as they can work arse miracles in some cases - go in and collar an assistant and demand them, don;t browse the rails in hopes
And if they don't work ask the assistant to bring you some that will!
(they are quite good like this as when they say at the till 'did anyone help you today?' you say 'Yes, Chantelle and she was excellent' and Chantelle gets a bonus )

Have you tried Monsoon? I am apple shaped and can't get on with the majority of trousers in Monsoon, so they might be better for a pear shape. I usually find I can't get the 12s to button at the waist and when I put the 14s on they button at the waist but are much too big at the hips/bum.

MrsBadger - thanks v much but lol, it was a 'Long and Lean' experience in Gap yesterday that prompted me to write! I said "REALLY????" when the assistant suggested Long and Lean (a style called Short and Stumpy may not be a bestseller, but would certainly more accurately describe my legs than Long and Lean).

However they looked great when taken off the shelf, nice fabric the right shape and everything (so I can see why you mentioned them). The assistant even persuaded me to try a 14 saying that their sizes were generous. Anyway to cut a long story short I eventually squeezed into a pair of size 18 Long and Leans but still got the nasty clinging to the knee cellulite effect going on... and DD had started crying in her pram... I should have persisted with more pairs but couldn't face asking for a size 20.

So I threw back on my Next size 16 black cords and made a bolt for the door. I will go back though when in a more positive frame of mind (and DD in a good mood) and insist on more help.

Mrs Spoon - no haven't tried Monsoon lately, don't usually think of looking there for trousers but will give it a go, thanks .

I'm a generous size 16 and have found best (for 'best' read 'only')jeans for me are Per Una boot cut. I can't get into a size 16 in other stores but Per Una are kind about making us feel better about ourselves!

FirstatForty, you sound the same shape as I am.GAp Long and Lean are my favourite jeans, so do try again if you can.The denim "gives" quite quickly, that's why they tell you to go for smaller size. I also got a pair of wide leg jeans from Additions online which are good.

i got some good ones from dorothy perkins - i never go in there - i was walking past their jeans on the way out of top shop and found the perfect pair so you never know

they are very dark blue which i think is essential for my thighs

new look was good too - i wouldnt normally be so cheap but the fit was great

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2007 18:36

I really don't think jeans are very flattering to most people with a larger bottom. I think there are tons of other much nicer more attractive things you could be wearing rather than trying to fit yourself into something that will not do you justice. I think linen trousers can look lovely on pear shaped women for instance.

lesliephillips · 13/05/2007 19:03

have you tried levis 525s? They have a good shape to them, I am a size 14 pear and wear these - John Lewis stock them I think or try here

newgirl · 13/05/2007 19:11

i agree with franny that jeans not always that great but not sure about linen either? i used to find that they creased in the worst possible areas? I think good skirts can be flattering

DimpledThighs · 13/05/2007 19:23

I suffer like you from a more than ample arse.

I only wear jeans with a really long smock or even a short dress. the best ones are some armani ones (oxfam) and the aforementioned and dismissed long and lean. Anything you get will have to have lycra - the stretch makes a BIG difference.

I think we have lovely arses anyway!

twinsetandpearls · 13/05/2007 19:27

monsoon, I am a size 16 and buy jeans and trousers in monsoon. Very flattering

maisym · 13/05/2007 19:30

check out land's end jeans

FirstAtForty · 13/05/2007 21:57

Thanks v much everyone for the suggestions and links, lots of inspiration there!

Hope I didn't sound dismissive re Long and Lean btw! They do look very nice, will revisit and see how I get on
