Are elasticated waistbands ever a good look on anyone?

Ok my preschooler has some elastic waistbands, That's fine. But I ordered some light dresses from h&m that looked nice online but I missed the elastic waistband. I am a bit overweight with a slight c section tum but generally ok shape, I was hourglass before having DC. The dresses transformed my body into something akin to a mountain troll. A pregnant mountain troll. WHO suits these??

I wear maternity trousers as my tummy's big. I'm not pregnant

HoneyDragon · 16/04/2018 13:16

I do. They hide my my muffin top nicely.

MuddyForestWalks · 16/04/2018 13:28

But surely having the tightest part round your widest part just exaggerates it? I'm not talking the big stretchy panels.

I have some trousers from Muji the elasticised part is at the back only. They look good.

Spam88 · 16/04/2018 13:37

Now I bloody love an elasticated waistband on trousers (no they don't look good, but yes they're comfy). I haaaate them on dresses though! I'm fairly small (although completely lacking in any kind of muscle tone) but they have a way of bunching up and making me look dreadful. They are definitely on my avoid list.

HoneyDragon · 16/04/2018 13:39

I hitch it up so the top part flops over. Like a tshirt tucked in a skirt.

TodoDoingDone · 16/04/2018 17:43

I think it depends on how they are made. Some are more discreet than others. Saw some cotton trousers in H&M at the weekend, with half an elasticated waist, they looked good, though I didn't have time to try them on.

I hear ya OP. Last week, apparently suffering from amnesia, I lifted a dress with an elasticated waist to try on. I looked like I had fashioned a handy belt from rope and tied it around a voluminous sack, thereby rendering my waist the thickest part of my body. I always look like this. I keep forgetting though.

Elasticated waist linen trousers are super comfy! I got some from ebay and they sit really nicely but do look dreadful off the hanger!

MerryDeath · 16/04/2018 19:04

ugh I HATE an elastic waist. my waist is my thinnest part i don't want all that bulk and scrunch round there. and even worse around my bum / hip area 😱

goose1964 · 16/04/2018 20:38

I've got gallstones and my waist changes size throughout the day with associated bloating so an elasticated waistband is essential.

MuddyForestWalks · 16/04/2018 20:44

goose I had gallstones and sometimes still get the bloating but there are other ways!!

And I say that as someone whose waist circumference can increase by ten full inches when I've got my bloat on

I love a dress with an elasticated waist at the right point, it’s a very flattering easy wear
(I’m on the short side so a lot are too low and just ride up).

WanderingTrolley1 · 17/04/2018 00:31

Hate elasticated waists on dresses. I look like a sack of shit tied in the middle.

Astrabees · 17/04/2018 10:41

No, just no, even my 91 year old mother doesn't like them, and apologises she now sometimes wears them for comfort over style.

MrsPeacockDidIt · 17/04/2018 11:07

I love an elasticated waist band on trousers ! i don't wear dresses so can't comment on those. My waist seems to be in an odd place for normal waistbands so the elasticated ones don't give me as much of a muffin top. I'm also tempted by maternity jeans every now and again !

Astrabees · 17/04/2018 11:38

This is "Style and Beauty" not "Comfort Corner" !!!

timeisnotaline · 17/04/2018 12:19

What about these? I’m not going to pay £100 for them but did take a closer look because they are elasticated! www.whistles.com/women/clothing/trousers/palmyra-print-trouser-27509.html?cgid=Trousers_Clothing_WW&dwvar_palmyra-print-trouser-27509_color=Coral%2FMulti#start=0

I like a bit of elastic in my trouser waistband, especially at the back. I'm often in between sizes and it gives a much better - and yes, smoother - fit than tightening my belt a notch. But you need a decent cut and fabric - it's when the elastic has to do all the work that the trouble starts.
