Grey hair/box dye

Am I going mad or is the dye coming off the grey hair? I do my roots really to cover a few patches of grey coming through. I dyed it 2 weeks ago and the grey roots are showing already - about a centimetre which is what I covered last time. It can't grow that fast!

It's permanent box due and the length of my hair still looks really fresh!

I have loads of grey, if I didn't dye I'd be totally grey (am 42). The last few months the dye has not seemed to take well on the roots and after abotu a week I can see them again as clear as day. My hairdresser said it's because there is enough grey to need a stronger mix and box dyes are obviously standard mixes. I'm not ready to go grey so am having it done at the salon again (had been going and then decided to do it myself). When he does it, it covers it completely and it's only regrowth I get, which it wasn't befre, it was clear the dye just wasn't taking.
I'm fed up with dyeing, but that's a whole other thread cos I'm not ready to go grey either.

I'm not losing my mind then!! About to line house so can't pay a hairdresser just yet but it's only few weeks away - thank god there's a solution!

I thought the same thing today about mine.

allthegoodnameshadgone · 14/04/2018 21:44

I hate going to an actual hairdressers I'd rather do it myself

golondrina · 14/04/2018 21:48

I prefer to do it myself in that it's cheaper and quicker, but the box dye just doesn't cut the mustard any more.

Branleuse · 14/04/2018 21:54

my hair grows really fast so i have to do it fairly often anyway, but a lot of hairdyes dont take well on grey hair. DOnt bother with youngish ones like live colour etc, and avoid red hair dyes as they go so bright on the roots, You need to use the classic type ones such as belle colour or recital. Im also really impressed with age-defy by nice n easy.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 14/04/2018 22:17

Dammit I just bought more live colour. The purple one lasted a lot longer but I wanted to tone it down - the dark brown is shite

You can dye it at home with professional dye. I started doing this after box colours weren't covering my greys.
Try majirel hair dye. Lots of posts on here about it.
Brilliant grey coverage. And it's easy to apply and mix at home.

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 15/04/2018 08:10

I've never heard of Majirel - is it available widely?

Dancergirl · 15/04/2018 08:40

Watching with interest, what colour do you use hey?

salvadory · 15/04/2018 09:02

I home dye using professional dye (I use Wella Koleston- buy it from a shop in my town that supplies hairdressers but you can buy from amazon etc.) I buy a big bottle of peroxide and mix myself when needed (monthly as I’m in my 40’s and have a lot of grey).
I have brown hair and use a shade called 6/7 however I was recommended to squeeze a bit of 6/0 in there too before mixing with peroxide to tone down the red. It does get a bit technical but I’d recommend going to the hairdressers to get exactly the colour you like then ask the hairdresser what dye she is using and how she mixes it- what % peroxide she uses etc. Then you can just buy and DIY.
It’s way easier than I’m making it sound and it works out so much cheaper than box dyes.
I started doing it when my 2 kids were tiny and I just couldn’t afford the time in the hairdressers chair.
People often say how nice my colour is too.

golondrina · 15/04/2018 14:50

I know you can do it at home and change the concentrations (do what the hairdresser does basically) but I can't be arsed. I'm not in the UK and the hairdresser isn't that expensive, so I'd rather just have it done there for now.

HeyMacWey · 15/04/2018 22:33

@dancergirl I used to use nice n easy 117a medium ash brown. I now use cool cover 5.1 which is a light Ash brown. (it doesn't come out light at all, it's just that professional colours are based on a wider colour range) I can post a picture if you want to see the colour? I like the cool colour as you don't get any red undertones.

www.salonsdirect.com/l-oreal-majirel-cool-cover

You get instructions in the tubes which give timings depending on whether you're doing virgin hair, roots only etc. Ratio is 1:1.5 dye:peroxide.

Dancergirl · 16/04/2018 09:57

Brilliant thank you hey how long do you leave it on for?

brogueish · 16/04/2018 12:26

The peroxide in box dye isn't very strong.

Like Hey I switched to Majirel (6.0 - technically "deep dark blonde", but actually comes out as mid-light neutral brown with excellent grey coverage and no fading). I use with 6% / 20vol cream peroxide and it works a treat. You can buy both from ebay, amazon, Sally's, etc.

HeyMacWey · 16/04/2018 12:40

I think it's 35 minutes. It gives timings on the instructions.

Dancergirl · 16/04/2018 12:46

Thank you. Can anyone advise me about which shade to get? I want a dark-ish chestnutty brown (with slight red tones but not too much)?

HeyMacWey · 16/04/2018 14:16

Possibly a 5.5 or 5.6? I'm not a professional though so don't follow my advice.

You'll need to Google images to see what you're looking for. Red in majirel terms will mean red though. What have you used previously?

Do lots of research and don't be tempted to go for a 4.* because it'll be darker than you think.

I'll post a picture of my colour so you can see how dark a 'light brown' actually is.
I've just copied this from a post that @TattyDevine posted a good few years ago that should help.

Here's a quick synopsis of how the Loreal colour numbering system works:

The first number relates to depth, or how dark the colour is from blonde to black.

10 Lightest Blonde
9 Very light Blonde
8 Light Blonde
7 Blonde
6 Dark Blonde
5 Light Brown
4 Brown
3 Dark Brown
2 Darkest Brown
1 Black

The second number relates to "tone". This is which tones are added to the depth to give you the finished effect for example copper or ash, so if you were to choose a base shade blonde (7) with gold tone added it would give you golden blonde.

•.1 = Blue ash
•.2 = Violet
•.3 = Gold
•.4 = Copper
•.5 = Mahogany
•.6 = Red
•.7 = Green ash

So Majirel 5.3 is Light Golden Brown. 116 in terms of Clairol is Natural Light Brown, and 116a is Natural Light Golden Brown. So you would be able to use Majirel 5.3 and be pretty pleased with the result, I would say.

I would be wary about doing your whole head with it if you've been dying your whole head - ideally you'd just "referesh" at the end by running it through in the last 10 minutes unless you have greys from root to tip. Do your roots then run it through at the end, I reckon.

You will need 20 volume (6 percent) developer (peroxide) and you need to mix the colour in the correct ratio. You use one and a half times the amount of developer to colour. So if you used 10ml of colour, you'd add 15ml of peroxide. If you wanted the kind of amount that you'd get in a box dye, measure out 50ml Majirel (its quite dense creamy stuff so 10 teaspoons, it doesn't "pour") and 75ml developer to make 125ml of made up dye. Let it sit for a few minutes to let the ammonia fumes evaporate a little.

I suggest anyone who wants to do professional dyeing at home reads all of the powerpoint presentations from this link to familiarise themselves with the products and numbering and procedure. That said, its not that different to box dye, but you want to get your colour right.

05/10/2011 07:25 TattyDevine

Just to add, as long as you have your colour right, Majirel will solve your grey coverage and colour fade issues. Its the dogs. Once its in, its in. That's why you should get your colour right!

If you put Majirel 5.3 into Google Images you should get a swatch book up which you can zoom in on. Ideally you'd go and look at one in a Sally's salon services or something.

Just to add, if you see colours with 2 numbers after the main number, that relates to secondary tone. So 5.31 is a light brown with a gold tone, but also some blue ash added to damnpen down that gold a bit and give a slightly more natural finish, 5.34 would be a much warmer tone because it would be a light golden brown with a copper undertone, 5.5 would be a mahogany brown, etc etc.
