Sulphate free shampoo- hair loss?

MonkeyPoke · 14/04/2018 09:02

I've recently changed to a sulphate free shampoo, I only use it twice a week but I'm concerned that I perceive to be losing more hair than usual.

Normally a quick couple of brushes remove loose hair but today I brushed and had loads, showered and had loads and then rinsed and had even more. I noticed at the last wash too that I felt I was losing more hair.

Is this a thing? It's the first hair regime I've found that doesn't leave my hair static and flyaway but if it's going to cause extra hair loss it's pointless.

Any other shampoo I could use? I also suffer with an itchy flaky scalp so I do one wash a week with Nizoral.

I just posted a thread asking for some advice about my hair. I'm thinking I may have a similar problem to you. I switched to the sulphate free shampoo and conditioner 4 months ago believing it would be better for my hair. It actually feels worse and more brittle than ever before Confused
Gonna go back to my old shampoo.

Bejazzled · 14/04/2018 11:40

I had the opposite. My hair hasn't been this good for years.

I'm a complete conversation to tangle teasers, although I don't have excessive hairless it's very long so I have t remove hair from my brush a couple of weeks or so, my tangle teaser removes hardly any

Could be coincidental as I don't lose much hair over winter then as spring appears I suddenly shed loads and through the summer, it's awful on holiday , the floor is just covered in them. Have used sulphate free shampoo for 3 years now, have tried a few and all different results but the one I use the most leaves my hair soft and better condition than when I used to use the usual Pantene etc.

DesperatelySeeking2016 · 14/04/2018 19:22

I switched to sulphate free and have also noticed I seem to be losing a lot of hair. Maybe it is ‘moulting’ ready for summer?!

hammeringinmyhead · 14/04/2018 19:43

Are you also using silicone-free conditioner and hair products? If not, there are no sulphates to wash the silicone out and you'll get buildup which can damage yoir hair.

Ridiculouslyso · 14/04/2018 19:53

There's a school of thought that sulphate free shampoos don't clean the scalp properly, causing blocked hair follicles which results in more hair loss. You may need to alternate with sulphate shampoos occasionally to give your scalp a good clean.

I started a thread a few days ago asking if all SLS free shampoos were equal and good as they always leave my hair dry (and inevitably lead to breaking). I often have to return back to silicone based conditioners to bring it back to life and workable.

I read that SLS free conditioners aren't fully up to the needs of city living as they don't fully remove the pollution that attaches to the hair strands. And also hard water plays a part in the care of your hair. I don't think that everyone is fully convinced OP.

Also in reading the thread no one has actually mentioned what they use, which would be good to compare experiences.

Mine are:
Shampoo: lavera mango milk or Logona aloe Vera

Conditioner: natures gate sunflower and pomegranate and tresemme naturals and Yves Rocher she butter hair mask. And the bad boy hair saviour is Pantene repair and shine hair mask Wink

Natura Siberica or L'Oréal EverPure, both from Superdrug and for coloured hair. I usually don't need conditioner but occasionally use the Natura Siberica one. It also smells divine.

hammeringinmyhead · 14/04/2018 22:16

I use Palmers coconut oil shampoo and Superdrug's own Extracts coconut conditioner.

MeetieVonWrinkleSqueak · 14/04/2018 22:46

Interesting. I’ve been using L’Oreal everpure for a couple of months now, and have noticed in the last few weeks that I’ve been losing a shit load of hair when I brush it (using a tangle tweezer).

Actually hair is falling out all over the place, so much so that even my DH has commented on how he keeps finding it everywhere.

My hair looks OK, but not outstanding, and the ends are really quite dry. Live in outer London, very hard water.

Hmm. Maybe I need to swap back to SLS and silicones for a while and see if that makes a difference.

I bought sulphate free shampoo and conditioner recently (Boucleme).

Not sure re hair loss as mine tends to be a twice yearly moult, but I bloody hate sulphate free - give me proper soapy suds and a clean feeling any day.

MonkeyPoke · 15/04/2018 00:12

Okay so I've been using L'Oréal Elvive Extraordinary Oil Low Shampoo and conditioner, plus every 3rd wash the Nizoral. I live rurally so no city smog.

I've just noticed a massive patch of thinning hair by my temple.

Frantic googling... could possibly be post partum alopecia, DC was born 5 months ago and I'd thought it fell out right away. Apparently not.

Not sure what to do, stop or carry on. I'm not pretty enough to carry off baldness!

Interesting idea. I have to wash my hair 3/4 times a week and now thanks to OP am wondering if the idea of it being a factor of hair loss might be a real possibility.
