SPF for acne prone face?

So I often see that we should all be wearing spf on our faces, every single day. However is this just normal sun screen that you'd put all over you in the summer or is there good ones specifically for your face?

I'm worried to use anything as I have hormonal acne prone skin, my cheeks have a lot of marking from bad cystic acne. I seem to have it under control-ish, but I'm scared to start using something oily and end up back at square one. I still regularly get spots as it is!

I swap between Benefits Dream Screen and Helios 360 oil free gel, I find the Helios one a bit heavy but it's higher protection but neither bring me out in spots and I have sensitive skin that is prone to spots.

I've been using the Effaclar Duo with spf 30 in the day time. I was a bit scared of putting it all over my face but it keeps everything pretty clear, doesn't irritate and sits well under makeup.
Maybe I will try and find something more hardcore for the summer when we have actual sunshine Hmm

Watching with interest. Want to wear an spf, but terrified of breaking out!

Nyancat · 13/04/2018 18:08

I read on here somewhere about biore watery essence, ordered it through amazon. It took a while to arrive but it's brilliant, dries in straight away and hasn't triggered my acne.

Butterfly1975 · 13/04/2018 20:14

I have very oily skin and I use Ultrasun which is really light. I've also suffered with cystic spots in the past which are mostly under control now.

Another vote for the biore. Western facial SPFs tend to be thick and sticky - they are considered a drug by the FDA and the European equivalent which hampers speed of innovation (plus there’s less demand) There are some really amazing, lighter formulations to be found in Korean and Japanese brands.

la roche-posay xanthelios..only thing that doesnt trigger my roseaca

Fairyliz · 14/04/2018 15:08

Good question op. I am in my 50s and have found whatever sun lotion I use on my face it brings me out in spots so I might try the Biore which has good reviews and is not too expensive

teta · 14/04/2018 15:58

Clinique do a couple of foundations for blemish prone skin that have spf in them. My dd1 is on antibiotics and epiduo for cystic acne and uses the B.B. cream. She finds it brilliant and the coverage is just right. The B.B. cream doesn’t exacerbate her Acne at all. In fact at the moment her skin is pretty clear.

agapanthus1979 · 14/04/2018 17:15

Which Biore one would you recommend? Went on Amazon but there are millions!!

NeverMetACakeIDidntLike · 14/04/2018 22:53

Following. I have combination skin and used to use the lush million dollar moisturiser with spf but they stopped making it :(

SplatPancake · 14/04/2018 23:02

Biore Watery Essence broke me out terribly (silicones I think). Not cystic, can’t advise there, sorry.

I’m having a much better time with Elta MD SPF46. It has niacinamide and no silicones. Also double cleansing when I wear it to ensure it’s all removed.

tutu112 · 15/04/2018 00:56

I've had a similar issue with cystic spots when I was using Biore watery essence, and thought it was breaking me out along my jaw and neckline, so I stopped using it. I've restarted using it now, and no issues so far. I think maybe the last breakout may just have been a hormonal thing. I really hope this spot free phase continues, because the Biore is brilliant. So light, so matt. Makeup goes on well over it, and not too spendy. I got mine from Amazon, it's in a blue tube. However, I would be keen to try other SPFs just in case something else works better, the Heliocare sounds particularly interesting for oily skin. Where do you all order your SPFs from? Is it possible to order just a sample to see what it's like without cluttering up the bathroom with loads of different SPF bottles?!

SplatPancake · 15/04/2018 08:07

I got Elta samples from eBay-I think they actually came from Australia. There were loofas, so was able to rest thoroughly, and were v v handy for traveling. Bought a full size a couple of months ago from strawberry net

Stupid question, but what order do you do stuff?
Double cleanse
Toner
SPF
Moisturiser
Foundation
?

Gah81 · 15/04/2018 16:23

Another vote for Elta MD here. Doesn't break me out.

As for order, I go:

Cleanser
Serum
Dermatologist azelaic acid cream
Moisturiser
(Wait for it to sink in)
Spf 46
Foundation/concealer

Etc...

AnotherOtter · 15/04/2018 16:41

Avène Cleanance SPF50+ is for oily, sensitive acne-prone skin www.boots.com/avene-cleanance-sunscreen-spf-50-plus-10229312 Bit too pricey for me so I use Biore Watery Essence which is less than half the price on Amazon. Takes 2-3 weeks for delivery from South Korea. It has alcohol in it so is drying for some but fine on me.

My order in the morning taken from the Fantastic Skincare thread is:
Cleanser
Active like vitamin C
Moisturiser (wait to sink in)
SPF
Makeup
