All of a sudden I look old!

I’m 38,and have twin 8 year olds.
I’ve just spent an absolute fortune on make up after seeing an ad for beauty and the boutique on fb, and fully expected a miracle to take place after application.

But I still look oooooooold!

Have you got any beauty secrets? Tips to hide saggy skin, enlarged pores, uneven skin tone?

Sam - it's easy really. Everyone will recommend a different product but don't over-complicate it. Just wash your face really thoroughly at the end of the day with whatever you fancy (cheap is fine!). Slap on an acid of some kind (the nip fab pads are a good place to start - aldi do a cheap dupe). And use a retinol a couple of times a week. People will recommend the ordinary retinol. I think it's shit and prefer Indeed Labs. Use a spf every day too.

UpperWallop · 12/04/2018 21:35

IPL is a salon treatment using laser. It can tackle spider veins and pigmentation. It hurts like a bugger though.

Fullfatlatte · 12/04/2018 21:37

Samb79 I’ve recently tried the Cleanse & Polish Liz Earle dupe from Aldi, it’s very good. I’m next to try the one from Superdrug as it’s highly recommended on here! Glycolic acids - Highly recommend the Superdrug pads £5.99 & they often have them on bogof (haven’t tried the Aldi ones yet which are £2.49). I’ve also just bought Pixi Glow tonic & very impressed. Retinol - Highly recommend Indeed Retinol Reface (recommended by Caroline Hirons...love her!). It’s been on offer in Boots for £13.33. I now use it about 5 times a week overnight. You’ll need a high SPF. Day cream - I adore Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face base & night either L’Occitane Divine cream or one I’ve just started to try, Marks & Spencer Sleep cream (a lovely rich cream & a good price). 😀

The best thing ever for my face has been regular exercise! It was like a face lift.

NewBallsPlease00 · 12/04/2018 21:40

I'm same and similar age...
I suddenly have jowels 😭
I think decent sleep, water, veg and yoga will probably help but zero time and chaotic lifestyle just isn't helping that right now. Roll in retirement

NewBallsPlease00 · 12/04/2018 21:44

Also since cutting dairy my skin is sooo much better
Easter eggs = chocolate = bad sad skin again!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 12/04/2018 21:47

Yes to dairy - I spent years trying out different pills, used steroid creams to help with my acne. Then stopped eating dairy for two weeks, my skin cleared. Started eating again - cyctic spots. Stopped dairy - skin clear again.

Ihatebuildabear · 12/04/2018 21:47

Following. My face has suddenly dropped.

Ihatebuildabear · 12/04/2018 21:48

Do you dairy free alternatives or just cut it altogether? I love cheese!

PugwallsSummer · 12/04/2018 21:51

Another 38 year old with a sagging face here! I'm planning to have some dermal fillers and have started using a night cream. It's my lower face mainly - jowls etc. Urgh.

Cantthinkofanoriginalname1 · 12/04/2018 22:07

Watching with interest!
Honestly I'm not stupid but reading that cheat sheet was just gobbldy gook. Double cleanse? Acid toner? Mist hydrate? Serum? Oils? I keep reading about glycolic, hyularonic, vit c, vit a and retinol/ retinoids but what part of the process should these feature, cleansing, toning, serum or moisturising? I don't understand the relationship with the process and the products, should Vit A be an ingredient of my cleanser, toner, serum, oil or moisturiser? Or does it matter where Vit A features as long as I use it?Is there not a dummies guide out there eg cleanse with a, acid tone which should contain b or c, serum which has d in it then moisturise with a product that has e,f or g in it. Then apparently it changes in the evening! Oh and SPF , are we talking bog standard suntan lotion?

Samb79 · 12/04/2018 22:08

That’s EXACTLY how I felt reading that!

I needed this thread! Watching with interest!

Polkadot1974 · 12/04/2018 22:17

It’s exhausting. My face looks like shit. Soft but droopy skin. Hate it. I need new products but no cash. Where in Aldi are the nip n fab type pads? I’ve not seen but happy to try them out. I also fancy the sleep cream from m and s. Mainly as I have a voucher!

NigellasGuest · 12/04/2018 22:30

Im sorry to suggest that no skin cream or serum will do anything for sagging/drooping/jowliness

Ihatebuildabear · 12/04/2018 22:34

Can someone recommend me a decent retinol that I can buy on Amazon!

Ihatebuildabear · 12/04/2018 22:39

Getting permanent lines under my eyes too. Definitely need a face lift!

Fullfatlatte · 12/04/2018 22:40

Ihatebuildabear - I’ve been using Indeed Retinol Reface (recommended by Caroline Hirons), I purchased mine from Boots as it was on offer £13.33 but I’m guessing you could purchase on Amazon 😀

Fullfatlatte · 12/04/2018 22:44

Polkadot - If you cant find the Aldi Glycolic pads definitely try the Superdrug ones (they are fab). Hope you like the M&S sleep cream, I’m a fan (especially at the price!) 😀

IWantMyHatBack · 12/04/2018 22:49

I've never used any kind of skincare, other than suncream, or the occasional moisturiser in the middle of winter. I don't even wash my face. I'd rather look old tbh

Somehow though, I don't. I'm only 42, so guess there's still time for it all to to hell, but I truly can't be arsed.

This is clearly the wrong thread, I'll fuck off now Grin

lovemylover · 12/04/2018 22:55

JMAngel1How do you find the Dermawand, do you think its any good,i got one on a months trial, but sent it back, seems a lot of money if it doesnt work,

UpperWallop · 13/04/2018 06:52

Retinol and acids can help to improve your actual skin but they do nothing for the droop/sagging/jowls sadly. To address that, you're into fillers/surgery/big money territory.

The Aldi pads are in the hotchpotch special buy aisles.

Indeed resurface retinol is fab. Best I've used and I've used many different ones, from cheap to very expensive.

NicolaSeven · 13/04/2018 07:40

God, I’m glad I’m not the only one. 38 here too.

It was getting to the point where I couldn’t bear looking in the mirror. Don’t mind getting older but can’t bear looking haggard.

Using Ordinary retinol (although never quite sure it makes a difference) and acid toner (which def does).

Cut out wheat and started doing couch 2 5k. These two have made a MASSIVE difference to energy / moonface.

And ... bit extreme for some, but had Botox and tear trough fillers. Have have botox before and it’s a bit of a poisoned chalice - prefer it when it wears off but the deep wrinkles are gone IYSWIM. Tear trough fillers were a bloody revelation though! You can’t tell I’ve been done but the deep knackered grooves are GONE. It’s a miracle. But I was petrified and went to a proper doctor to get them done.

Samb79 · 13/04/2018 14:23

Well I'm not likely to embark on any hardcore beauty treatments (tear trough fillers?! Every day is a school day!), but I need to up my game.

So. Help me out with my cleansing regimen please
From what I've read, I need the following:
Cleanser
Toner
Acid? Glycolic? Hydraloric? Salicylic?
Retinol?
And moisturiser?
eye cream

So i've just started using:
Cleanser - Clarins milk cleanser at night, micellar water in morning
Mac Softening lotion (salicylic)
Moisturiser - nivea in the morning, jojoba oil at night
Eye cream - just found a chanel tester, i'm giving that a go!

How do I incorporate all the other things? Wish my mum knew all about this. Actually this is probably why I'm starting to look like her so early on!

I hear you sistas! And I'm also 38!
I started oil cleansing a few weeks ago and, although initially sceptical, it has honestly made such a difference to my skin. And the best thing is that it is cheap and really easy.
I also agree that improved diet, drinking more water and exercise have a massive effect. but are very boring!
