Can anyone recommend a hair dye that's as harmless to me and the environment as possible?

I need to dye my hair to cover the approx 20-30% grey now coming through, but I don't want to go down the route of using high street dyes as they are so damaging and I have ezcema and asthma so want something that is as natural as possible.

A friend uses Daniel Field and likes it but I wondered if anyone could recommend any others?

My hair is light brown, so I'd be looking at going a couple of shades darker/warmer. Nothing dramatic, just to try and get a bit of colour and definition back to my appearance which seems really colourless/insipid at the moment.

Try having a look at the blocks of Henna dye that Lush do.

I just started the Lush blocks. To get brown to stick and cover grey, you put the henna rouge on first. Then (I did it days apart), the Brun, which contains indigo. My hair is in better condition and looks much thicker than it did before. It's a commitment though, as you can't return to other dyes until it grows out (reacts badly).
The store or website gives more advice.

Just to add I've used Lush Henna for years and switched to conventional (salon permanent dyes) and it was fine - no reaction.
I left it 3 months from my last Lush session before going to the salon but it definitely hadn't grown out (my hair is bra-strap length).
I had used Caca Brun / Marron on my brown (with grey!) hair and the salon dye was brown.
Only switched because we did our bathroom up and I was terrified of dying the grout red with the henna!

Thanks all; so it looks like I need to overcome my fear of Henna then (or more accurately my fear of having to spend more time cleaning the bathroom than dying my hair)Grin.

Hi, you could try this website www.suvarna.co.uk/ they've got a range of natural hair dyes plus pure henna, indigo etc.
I've bought some really good henna from hennaboy too, it was much better than the lush henna I've used before, I got much better grey coverage with it.

Sat here with my henna on.

It's a right pain to do but I'm really pleased with the grey smothering results.

My hair has shine since using Lush henna blocks a month ago. Thicker, beautiful condition. I did as directed, and used henna first. Waited 2 days and it oxidised and went a deeper shade. Then used their caca brun block. 70% grey roots and I got good coverage. I didn't wrap it whilst on the hair as I don't want it too red - more brown. This will save a fortune, plus I don't have to wait until I have 1cm of roots showing before going to a salon. I can do the roots only at home every couple of weeks. I hopefully won't need to return to chemical dyes. Good to know from PP that it dodn't react though.
