Anyone tried hair and nail vitamin preparations?

My hair is horribly dry. I’ve been doing no shampoo and washing with conditioner for about 2 years, which improved matters at first but now it seems to be diminishing returns. I’m actually considering being done with it and going for a Jean Seberg style now, but realistically, I don’t have the small delicate features needed to pull it off.
Has anyone used those vitamin preparations you see advertised- vitabiotics, Imedeen etc? Any comments/ recommendations? Thank you.

I've not used vitamins specifically designed for skin, hair or nails but I took evening primrose capsules for a while and noticed my dry hair was more manageable.

whataboutbob · 10/04/2018 21:45

Thanks everley that’s definitely the kind of tips I’m after. I have been pondering how some women seem to keep sleek and shiny locks past fifty, maybe it’s genes, but I’ll try anything.

I use Perfectil vitamins and I reckon they do help somewhat. Most noticeably on my nails, somewhat on my hair and hardly on my skin though.

Biotin and an Omega supplement might help.

ZenZeeZoo · 10/04/2018 23:56

Don't bother too much with the branded ones, a good biotin supplement should do the trick. The branded ones are just £££ for the same thing.

whataboutbob · 11/04/2018 08:28

Thanks zen and everyone else who posted. I’m thinking of buying some biotin tabs plus evening primrose oil/ borage oil and giving that a go.

My hairdresser recommended biotin when I was losing a lot of hair. It's made a noticeable difference - am no longer seeing swathes of hair each time I shower, it feels and looks much thicker and my nails seem stronger too!

That’s great cats. My hair is quite thick but Brillo pad dry. I’m going to give biotin a go even though my diet is pretty good ( I’m a dietitian!). I’ll report back.

I’ve been using Perfectil Max and it’s definitely helped my hair. I’ve also supplemented with additional Spatone too as my iron levels have also been very low for years (my go said iron levels have to be quite high to have an impact on hair). My hair is not falling out in handfuls now and can see the new growth. My hairdresser has also noticed a difference.

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 11/04/2018 09:55

Im peri meno and my hair is thinning, and shedding like an Alsatian in summer!! I've just started to take Biotin (well a B100 supplement with lots of Bioton in it), Sea Kelp and a spoonful of pumpkin seeds each day on my porridge. I'll report back in a few weeks 👍🏻

Are you using a conditioner with no silicone? Essential if you're only washing with conditioner. If you use one with silicones without also using a shampoo the silicone will just build up in your hair and make it dryer. Ditto if you are using hair products with silicone in. You can tell by looking at the ingredients - anything ending with "one" is a silicone e.g. Diamethicone.

I'd recommend using a clarifying shampoo once in a while anyway, esp as you live in a city. I really like shea moisture Jamaican black shampoo. It makes my hair feel softer - but don't overuse.

Regular trims also seem to help my hair stop looking so dry.

FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds · 11/04/2018 10:11

Has anyone seen an improvement of vertical ridges on nails through supplements? My hair is very dry too so maybe I'm deficient in something. Or maybe it's just my age (45) Sad

HonkyWonkWoman · 11/04/2018 10:20

I've taken Boots Hair, Skin and Nails (about £20 for 180) for 2 years and have noticed a definite difference in my nails, my skin looks good and hair feels thicker.
Perfectil is expensive (can't afford any more) but amazing, when I used it regularly my skin glowed and people used to mention it.

whataboutbob · 11/04/2018 11:06

Thanks olbitey I’ve been avoiding silicones for at least two years. It worked well at first but just doesn’t seem to be doing the trick anymore. Still, I’m continuing to avoid cones just in case they make the situation worse. I use Faith in Nature conditioners to wash.

Fatballs, sadly it seems that once you hit the menopause hair can get dry. That’s been my experience anyway. I’m info gathering right now to see if anything can combat it.

Try cod liver oil capsules. I think my scalp is greasier when I take them.
