How to dress 'cool'?

EllaLavella · 09/04/2018 14:39

If you dress in a cool way or know someone who does how do you/they dress?

I'm such a scruff but want to look more cool. I don't think a polished, 'expensive' looking style as often mentioned on this board would suit me.

Who do you think of when you picture someone who looks cool?

Dancingleopard · 09/04/2018 14:44

I follow clothing wedbites that I like on Instagram and try to copy something I see nice

EllaLavella · 09/04/2018 14:53

Instagram following is a good idea, will have a look on there.

Weirdly I often think Abbey Clancy looks quite cool, although not sure that's just because she's super confident and maybe having loads of money helps her to look cool? Although I realise it's totally contradictory to me not wanting an expensive looking 'look'

Springing to mind:

-Generally plain (ie not patterned) clothing.
-Oversized too, never too tight.
-Sharp haircut, or messy bun
-Bit of vintage
-Nod to current fashion eg cool trainers but never heard to toe

Instagram and pinterest!

Anything that can be attributed to a specific season (e.g. SS17) or style fad (cold shoulders - eugh) is decidedly uncool.

Most importantly you have to be/look comfortable and true to yourself or even the coolest outfit will look like it's on the wrong person!

Tall and thin limbs ... so nothing I will ever be. They ca. Wear a maxi dress or trousers or a bloody towel and still look cool.

^this. Cheesy but 110% true.

But to add, the point is to look effortless and definitely not like you’re trying too hard. So I’d say a simple style, no garish prints, no shoes you can’t walk in etc. Stick to good quality classics, nothing too fashionable. The vibe being, I just found this on the floor of my closet and threw it on!

One tip I’ve also read a few times, mostly with regard to French style, is day-old hair. So before a night out/big event, get your hair done the day before and sleep on it. So you get a slightly tussled, not overdone look.

Not trying too hard , being completely comfortable so definitely no uncomfy heels.
Some classic items in classic colours so a black leather jacket rather than a mustard jacket.
Some on trend or ahead of trend items, wearing styles before anyone else does.
Wearing climate appropriate clothes and accessories, so gloves and coat on cold days, sunglasses in the sun.
Hair colour that suits you and hair that isn't try too hard.

Usually what I find cool is slim and gorgeous anyway... so they might as well be wearing a flat sheet and I don't even notice. That's why they use models, they can sell anything.

So back to me then. Usually l like neutral colours, simple minimalistic designs, some geometric patterns, v limited pops of colour and a personal rule: one thing should ALWAYS be undone. I.e. if I have the perfect pouty lips in a bold colour, my hair will be a bit messy, sort of bed head. If I have a nice eyeliner flick, my lips will be left bare. If I have formal clothes on, I will lay off any statement jewelry etc. But what I always always try and do, is to stay reasonably slim and have glowy skin, with a nice natural makeup base and a bit of blush. All that said, I feel I am a bit rubbish with styling my pear shaped self, and I have the same questions as you, tbh.

I've just found a blog by a Canadian blogger who I think dresses quite cool, she did lots of capsule wardrobe posts too which I really like

Thanks for the tips everyone! 👍🏻

And I love that blog that you've posted the link for, juan!

I think skinny jeans with a white blouse tucked in, converse or nice flats, and then something to lift it all like a chunky necklace.

Tan is nice too, maybe a belt or sandals.

Messy hair, but obviously hair that is well cared for and in good condition.

sadly I don't dress like that

rightknockered · 10/04/2018 16:46

I've had the odd individual tell me I'm cool before, but not everyone thinks I am, I'm sure.
My hair is always slightly dishevelled, it's naturally wavy and never neat. I wash it the night before and sleep with it wet and just scrunch in hair gel in the morning. I wear trainers, usually Nike Air max 97/95s, with almost everything, sometimes wear "statement" boot. My preferred outer wear is leather jacket. My nails are short and black/dark red. I mix gold and silver jewellery. I think most of my clothes are half a size to a size too big because it is difficult to find anything that fits. I'm a size 4 - 6.

rightknockered · 10/04/2018 16:47

I think I look a mess most of the time.
A good belt helps, decent bag, rings and earrings have more impact than a necklace imo. I've recently taken to wearing a silk scarf around my neck.

What colours suit you? Start with collecting together your clothes in these colours and see what you have. Can you make outfits that look similar to the look you want out of them? If not, what do you need?

Try to stick to a limited pallet if you are going for this type of look. Add just the pieces you need and make sure they link in with the chosen colour scheme. (If you’ve chosen cream/ navy/ charcoal for instance, don’t buy a purple shirt “because it’s pretty”- you’ll just get cross when it doesn’t work with your other clothes).

Patterns- classic is fine, with plain clothes as a contrast. Don’t try to clash them. Again, think about the colours in any patterns.

Coats/ Jackets- these are often what people judge first. Go simple and classic, you don’t need foot long fringing or thick chains dangling. You do need well cut, decent fabric and colours that go. Are you s scarf wearer or do you hate them? If you hate them, a v-neck coat isn’t much use in the uk.

If you possibly can, get rid of the clothes that don’t fit in with what you want to do. You’ll wear them (you know you will!) and them feel depressed when you haven’t achieved your look. If you buy 1 new thing, get rid of an old one.

Make up? Even if it’s just a bit of powder, mascara and lip gloss. This look generally needs to look as though you’ve groomed today. Ditto hair- it only looks casual. Nails- clean and shaped if not painted. Not usually long.

I have totally overhauled my wardrobe. It took about 18 months and I really need to review again (may make the most of DH being out tonight). It was really worthwhile, and-because I didn’t obsess about where stuff come from- not as expensive as it sounds.
