How should you thin out thick coarse hair?

My hair is seriously thick/wiry/coarse/frizzy (lucky meConfused). I’ve had a couple of mess ups at the hairdressers over the last year and as it’s in A long bob it’s not very forgiving when they mess up. The last 2 hairdressers didn’t thin it out at all and so it’s one length which just looks too thick/heavy. How should I be asking them to thin it out? In the past I’ve had razor/thinning scissors/layers. At this length what should work best?

I have similar hair, but fortunately my hairdresser thins it out well - I don't know what she actually does though! I know that's not that helpful sorry. You could maybe try asking for hairdresser recommendations on here?

Thanks. Yes I might do.

I have a thinning scissors.

I gather hair around the edge and put a pony tail around it so I don't cut it so it doesn't straggle out of a pony tail holder.

Then I thin the hair at the nape of the neck. It does really help but hair dressers will not approve

It's less extreme than an under cut though.

Stay away from the razor!

Hairdresser did that to my coarse wavy hair once and for want of a better word -totally buggered it up

Took me 2 years to grow it out

Current hairdresser uses thinning scissors

If there is one thing I'd say don't do, it's let anyone near you with thinning scissors unless they are a complete expert in their use. Wrongly used, they will make your hair frizzier.

Find a hairdresser that specialises in your hair type. There is a great one in London, if you're near enough.

I kept changing hairdresser till I found one who could manage thick hair. Not all hairdressers can, unfortunately.

I tend to go in and say 'I'd like to leave with half the weight of hair than I came in with please, but not that much shorter.'
My current hairdresser doesn't seem to actually get rid of much of the thickness but it isn't looking or feeling as horrible, but that might just be preggo hormones.

Yes. I’m near London. Where and who? That’d be great!!

Here you go

As you can see, her next appointments are in August! She's very popular and completely worth the wait. Check her out on Instagram.

Do not let anyone near you with razor or a thinning scissors. It is completely contraindicated for thick wavy hair.My hairdresser who I had been with for a long time decided to 'thin out ' my hair last September. It was a complete disaster.I have really got quite nice hair , shoulder length wavy and dark (now dyed).I am always complemented on it but since then I've been walking around looking like Worzel Gummidge Truly awful.I have had to have it cut shorter and trimmed every six weeks since then and styling it in order to look half decent takes me ages.Today was actually the first day that I felt I looked like my old self.Never again!

Wow she looks amazing benny! Just checked her out on insta. Proper transformations! August is a long time to wait. Maybe I will just wait it out...

Thanks for the advice all.
