Hair colour fades very quickly. Any tips?

I have my roots coloured every 5-6 weeks and my colourist paddles it through which gives a lovely effect.
It's been 2 weeks since I had it done and yet again it's a sickly light orange colour rather than light ashy brown (my natural colour before the grey appeared). I use colour suitable sls and paraben free shampoo, wash only every 3 or 4 days in cool water, rarely use heat on it and still it fades. I tried a purple shampoo (fudge) but it just looked dull with a peculiar tinge to it.

Any tips on how to keep colour looking like the colour it should be for a bit longer please?

It might be the brand of dye doesn’t work with your hair type. My salon used to use L’oreal products and I had the same issue. They have now changed to Tigi and my hair retains a natural colour between touch ups.

Have you spoken to the stylist about the fading they may have some ideas to help

Mine does this too, and I have it coloured at a salon every 6-8 weeks. I have permanent colour as I have so many greys. The hairdresser recommended using a moisturising shampoo and conditioner as that apparently helps retain colour. I haven't noticed any difference. It is a lot worse in the summer, but it happens year round. The hairdresser doesn't have any more ideas!

I think I'll have to bite the bullet and ring the salon as I really hate the colour it's gone again. I thought about trying to put some slightly darker bits through it myself but that spells disaster.
Wish I had the guts and the face to shave it off and let the grey come through but I've been struggling for the last 3 or 4 years with it thinning, mainly at the front.

poppym i sympathise,i have the same problem, and my roots dont seem to absorb the colour very well, and soon come through

One tip I read years ago is not to wash your hair for at least 2 days after dye is applied.

I recently did a mahogany semi-perm and as red fades fastest, I dug out some shampoo I'd put aside (Waitrose Pure) no SLE (I think thats the name) in it.

I use Superdrug dye , lasts really well on mine ( good 30% grey now)

Might have used the wrong colour whichever works with you natural, it's worth calling the salon and asking them to have a look :)

I was surprised that my colour lasted better when using a shampoo/conditioner for coloured hair. I guess that is kind of obvious, but I assumed it was just a marketing ploy. I'm using Tresemme for coloured hair now and my Nice n'easy semi perm is growing out not washing out, before I was using L'Oréal fibrology and the dye was only lasting 2 weeks. Just wish the Tresemme thickened like the L'Oréal.

If you have a lot of grey to cover then that might be an issue - grey hair doesn't hold colour in the same way that your other hair does.

I would go 'menopausal' blonde - ie lighter highlights and gradually reduce the number so the grey comes through over the next couple of years. But i'm a total advocate for grey hair.

That would be my ideal scenario archduke but I'm wary of having bleach put on due to the thinning on the top/frontal area.

I used to get this too, my hairdresser suggested using a semi perm colour rather than a perm and it doesn’t appear to have gone orange this time (apparently perm colours bleach your hair still, whereas semi’s don’t?)

poppym12 · 08/04/2018 21:18

Think it would do any harm putting a semi permanent over it myself to try to tone it down a bit?

I had this, my hairdresser made all the right noises but it never got sorted. Finally changed hairdressers, now my colour stays in a lot better so I assume it’s a different brand. I’m also having Olaplex which apparently helps the colour.

I’ve used Aveda colour conserve for years, and sun protection spray as needed.

I’ve noticed fresh grey doesn’t always take colour as well so it’s still not perfect, but at least it’s not orange!
