I've been a stay at home parent for nearly 8 years, hoping to return to work later this year. What do people wear when they attend a job interview these days??! My background is corporate, office based and I wore suits all the time. But everything seems to have become more relaxed during my career break. DH Is office based but hasn't worn a suit for years. Is it still the done thing to wear suits to an interview or is that too formal?? Thanks in advance for any guidance!

DD is currently interviewing for her first professional NHS Rome. She wears a navy blue knee length dress with white crochet collar from Monsoon, black tights, short black peplum jacket and black low heeled court shoes.

She hates the outfit, feels like a granny at 20, but actually looks lovely and very smart.

The outfit does not, and will not ever be worn outside an interview.she is far happier in her crop tops and high waisted jeans!

*role not Rome ffs

Suit is fine, but even for interview maybe a bit formal, depending on the role. A dress with a jacket would be fine for every situation I can think of.

For and interview I would say a suit or smart dress. Depends on the role partly but it's always better to look as smart as you can.

Hispterwannabe · 05/04/2018 22:34

I’d say smart is the way to go, I’d definitely rather be over-dresses than under. I’d wear a good fitted suit or dress and blazer combo.

peonylover22 · 05/04/2018 22:37

Personally I would go for a dress and jacket plus court shoes. I’ve interviewed for law firms in that outfit and they are as formal as you can get. Good luck!

Thank You! I prefer trousers to skirts/dresses so it sounds like a suit Is still the way to go. I'll experiment with a dress and jacket to see if i feel comfortable enough. Now I've just got to actually get an interview!

Personally I think suits look a bit dated these days. I think cigarette trousers, top, and a blazer (in a different colour to the trousers), with heels is a good look.

JaceLancs · 05/04/2018 23:45

I wear dress and jacket or trousers with plain top and jacket but not a suit

barney11 · 06/04/2018 09:49

Hmmm, that's what I was worried about, a suit looking a bit dated...

I recently went to an open day thing for a job and was surprised to see not many suits there. I’m in a similar situation where I’m hoping to get an interview soon. Hmm.
