Talk to me about this double cleansing business...

I’m too lazy to Google.

I wear very little make up generally, just loose powder and occasionally blusher. I currently wash my face with a gentle exfoliating wash. I rarely get spots. I am 43.

But am I missing something miraculous...?

I don’t think so. I think if you have specific skin complaints that can be affected by how clean your skin is then, yes, it might be worth doing. But I don’t and when I tried it, it wasn’t.

I went through a phase of religiously double cleansing and the only outcome was that I used up my cleanser twice as fast! I'm back to just cleansing once now, my skin is no different and I have a few extra pennies. Some people do swear by it though!

It's for the evening cleanse when people are taking make up off. Not required in the morning.
I use micellar water and superdrug's hot cloth cleanser. Seems fine for me.

If you're wearing sunscreen, primer, foundation, powder, bronzer, blush, highlighter etc, then the first cleanser is intended to remove all that and the second cleanse is to remove any residue and clean your skin.

If you're not wearing much makeup and you're happy with your skin, then what you're doing now is probably fine.

I only double cleanse if I’m wearing make up or sunscreen. I use an oil cleanser for the first cleanse and a cleansing lotion for the second. Remove both with clean flannels and warm water.

I double cleanse because I like full coverage makeup and am prone to sore if it’s not fully removed at night. I use either a clay/mud type cleanser for first cleanse (micellar water if I’m feeling lazy or oil based pre cleanse type product if I fancy something a bit more comforting if that makes sense) and a hot cloth type cleanser for 2nd cleanse. If I just use a hot cloth cleanser once it’s not enough for me

The Caroline Hirons double cleanse from Pixi is pretty good if you don’t mind unperfumed products as a starting point. I prefer something that smells a bit nicer if I’m spending that much personally.

Sali Hughes, Guardian makeup guru and fountain of knowledge was talking about makeup removers last week,or the week before. Worth having a look, as far as I remember she was advocating cheap removers as she says if she is spending money on stuff she wants it on her face not flushed down the sink!

I heart Sali, even if she does have a weekly photograph taken that makes her look gorgeous, every week, humph.
