Blonde hair gone yellowy with ginger roots

Hi all,

I've not had a lot of money recently so decided to bottle dye my hair.

It's now gone yellowy with ginger roots. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I don't want to attempt to redye it as it might make it worse. Any help would be appreciated xx

Try using touch of silver shampoo and conditioner. I had the same problem and it sorted the yellowing. Good luck and I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.

You need a toner - la riche directions white or silver is good. You can get it online cheaply. Whack it on your hair, cover with with a shower cap and leave for about 15-30 mins. It looks alarmingly purple in the pot but will help take the yellow out and won’t damage your hair.

From what you say I imagine you were trying to go a bit lighter and the bleach element of the dye hasn't lifted it enough so it's yellowy / ginger.

Purple shampoo and conditioner can tone down the yellow / ginger but for it to really make a difference your hair probably needs to be lifted to a lighter blonde.

It's worth trying though, and I would recommend Aveda Blue Malva Shampoo and Conditioner (there are other cheaper brands) to tone down the yellow and add ash tones. Leave it on for a few minutes to make a difference. It's always worked for me in the past when my highlights haven't lifted enough and tend to go yellow / ginger.

Then when you can afford it get some light ash blonde highlights through it all which should change the overall effect and reduce the yellow / ginger tones.

I bleach my hair regularly. The best thing to do is to build up to it slowly.

If you use the bleach again in a week or two (once your hair and your scalp have recovered) the colour will be much better. However it is worth noting that the lengths will be very dry afterwards. I protect my hair with coconut oil before I start and this really helps.

I find with bleaching that little and often works best.

The purple shampoos are a good idea and so are silver/grey toners. be aware though that if you leave it on too long you can get a slightly lilac tinge.

I use the plain bleach kits (powder and liquid 40%) then use a box dye over the top in an Ash shade.

What you have done so far is to remove the colour so any further blonde box kits will work much better.

But always be mindful of protecting the condition of your hair. Little and often, coconut oil on your hair and scalp and condition your hair every day. And never leave the dye on longer than recommended.

And focus on the roots first and leave it on the lengths of your hair for the shortest time.

Good tips from rememberthetime re doing your roots first and about using 40% bleach. Your box dye wouldn't have been that strength bleach which is why the colour didn't lift enough to get past the yellow stage.

You'll need a toner with a violet base to even out the orange tones but may not be enough to neutralise it to match the roots Sad
