How do you stop your eyeliner looking too dramatic?

My go to look is "the flick" on the top lash line as it suits me best. But more often than not I can't get it right and it either looks too thick or the flick at the end ends up way too long and cleopatra like.

What I want to achieve is a fine defined line as close to my lash line as possible and a subtle well defined flick at the end, how do I do it?

I'm currently using soap&glory supercat liner.

Try tightlining

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 04/04/2018 14:36

I tried Supercat.
I looked like Alice Cooper after 2 hours...

picklemepopcorn · 04/04/2018 14:39

Try using a softer pearl, almost translucent, liner over it. It softens the look.

bonzo77 · 04/04/2018 14:47

Hated Supercat. I like the Lancôme Artliner. More ££ but way easier to use. Proper liquid with a brush gives a super thin line and is usually cheap (and no better if you buy a fancy brand). I’ve also had one (Rimmel?) that was more of a stylus that you dipped, that was nice and fine too.

You tube is good for tutorials. I find pulling my eyelid taut really helps to get a defined line and an acceptable amount of “flick”.

This one from Amazon think less than pound it's amazing thin and doesn't shift

Could you switch to a brown liquid liner? I find black too harsh so I use Stila Stay All Day in brown.

It's a matter of getting the technique right, and then just keep trying as getting a flick right is really hard, and it requires a lot of training.

You can find tutorials online.

You may also find that other liners will work better for you - a different nib on the pen (some are thick, some are thinner, some are more flexible), or a different brush or a different type of product (gel vs liquid), or just a different formulation of the product.

I prefer a gel liner with a thin Mac brush. I've yet to try a liquid liner that doesn't skip, bleed, crumble or smudge after an hour.

Put it on as normal, then gently run a baby wipe across your eyelid, pat dry with some tissue paper - all that will remain is the liner right on the lash line. Can't help with the flick though as it's not something I'm able to do.

madamedepoppadom · 04/04/2018 16:19

Use a dark browny grey rather than black. I like Essence "Lucky Lead" (relax, it doesn't actually contain lead!)

I have trouble getting flicks right too as I'm convinced my two eyelids are slightly different shapes, and what works for one doesn't work for the other. I get round it by doing a very thin line first and then adding to it when I can see that the general shape is right.

omBreROSE · 04/04/2018 16:52

If you use an angled brush from underneath- it will make the shape for you!
The shape of the brush does it. So, use powder first - trace over with liquid if you want a stronger look.
Anyone with hooded or small eyes should tightline instead though.
I face most women over 35 shuid do that. Use a soft grey or brown :)

Petitepamplemousse · 04/04/2018 16:59

I usually do a liquid eyeliner but then a softer kohl over the top. It makes it look quite ‘done’ but not a harsh/dramatic line.

Petitepamplemousse · 04/04/2018 17:00

Oh yes and I used a dark brown not black.

Petitepamplemousse · 04/04/2018 17:00

*use

Tanaqui · 04/04/2018 20:47

May I ask what tightlining is? (Feel v uncool!).

GhostCurry · 04/04/2018 21:13

Start from the outside of your eye and work your way in. Then you can start at the edge of your line (outside corner of the eye) and draw in the flicked end afterwards. Both ends of the line need to be thin, basically.

The other thing is, keep a stash of cotton buds and eye makeup remover (I use Simple) together with your eyeliner so it’s always there when you need to correct any irregularities. I always need to touch up the line in some way or another! Not sure how people manage to do it all in one go and for it to work.

For me, a thick line looks bad, it conceals my whole eyelid which makes my eyes look round, not feline. The line needs to be fairly fine.

ProjectGainsborough · 04/04/2018 22:48

Clinique pretty easy eyeliner is amazing. Gives a really precise line - I can do it in the car and I am totally crack handed.

BluePony · 04/04/2018 23:17

@QueenOfMyWorld what is it??

LittleWingSoul · 05/04/2018 02:27

I'd also agree that going for pretty much any colour other than black is your best bet. I use brown, purple or navy... in a felt pen. Ir softens the whole look.

QueenOfMyWorld · 05/04/2018 10:34

BluePony this one it's got a kohl eyeliner in the lid 😁

Queen is it actually waterproof?

QueenOfMyWorld · 05/04/2018 10:44

Well it's never smudged while I've been in the rain lol

QueenOfMyWorld · 05/04/2018 10:45

It's the best I've ever used tbh the price is beyond amazing I bought 3!

TheShaniaTwainExperience · 05/04/2018 10:47

I use brown instead of black. I have blue eyes so it seems less harsh with brown liner
