Does anyone (non-hairdresser) cut their own hair?

I've been a lazy so and so and not been to the hairdressers for a long time. I usually tie my hair up for work so the style and length doesn't bother me until it gets too long which it has.

I have work for the next few days and I really need some length taken from my hair. It's layered but I was just going to put it in a ponytail and cut straight across and if I really mess up dd(17) can even it out.

Should be grand shouldn't it?

Well I just did it and I didn't make a complete balls of it so I guess that answers my question Grin

I wouldn't dare, and I've never cut my child's either.

pinklady3586847 · 03/04/2018 22:42

I frequently cut my own fringe because I'm to lazy to go to the hairdresser in between cuts. I mess it up 50% of the time Grin

FlaminYon · 03/04/2018 22:52

I feel all light and like I should be prancing around humming the Smurfs theme tune.

It looks fine to me but my hairdresser will no for sure I've been messing with it Grin

I always cut my own hair as just hate the forced small talk. Found out how to do it on YouTube. It gets easier. But I have boring shoulder length hair that I let grow long then cut a few inches off every spring.
Every time I went to a hairdresser the first cut was great, the 2nd time not so well cut the third time shit cut and constant talking. I went to every local hairdresser hoping to find a quiet one who focused on cutting over chat, didn’t happen so learnt to cut it myself 4 years ago. Never looked back loads of videos online to perfect your skills.

I kinda do between hair appointments as I only get my hair "done" about 3 times a year and then the shape/layers start to grow out or else I don't think the layers are quite right even when professionally cut, so I take the scissors to it!

I never do anything really dramatic, just tinker with the edges and shorten the side bits, but it looks fine. There again, my hair has a slightly messy look (deliberately) anyway!

joystir59 · 04/04/2018 11:52

I have short somewhat wavy hair that's quite forgiving. I always cut it myself as can't stand being turned into a bland old 'lady' by the hairdresser

KnitFastDieWarm · 04/04/2018 12:55

I have shoulder length hair with one long layer and I always cut it myself unless I’m havibg a cut as part of a colour. I honestly can’t tell the difference!

Foxsox · 04/04/2018 12:58

I do.

I did mine on Monday night as it was getting too long.

Mine is easier as it's VERY curly so very forgiving and not obvious if you fudge it.

I trim my kids hair too, my DS has had many compliments recently, must have done a good job!

Ragusa · 04/04/2018 13:00

I did my own recently as couldnt face paying the money on a flatlining salary. Ot looks fine, I cant tell any difference. However it is wavy and longer; I wpuldnt do it if I had a pixie cut.

Theweasleytwins · 04/04/2018 13:06

I cut two inches off my hair earlierSmileif it gets too long it knots up so need to keep it shoulder length or brush it every hourConfused

dotdotdotmustdash · 04/04/2018 13:15

I have mid-length curly hair which I've cut for the last 5 years or so after watching some you-tube videos. I just wet it and pull it all into a ponytail sticking out of my forehead, then I take an inch so off the end of the ponytail. I remove very little hair but it certainly seems to take a wee bit from all the layers.

bustedwomb · 04/04/2018 13:21

I cut my own hair all the time and also colour it and do all sorts to it and it looks so good. Nobody ever knows I do it myself. I really dislike going to the hairdressers and I don't know why exactly. I hate small talk and hate how they straighten it so thin and I just like the way I do it better.

blueirises · 04/04/2018 13:25

Yes, I do, and it's certainly no worse than when a hairdresser cuts it. I can do it very 3 months or so, it only takes 20 minutes and I don't have to fork out £40+ or listen to small talk drivel. It's long with long layers but very thick, and I don't think I've ever had it cut professionally without having to "tinker" with it a bit anyway.

I also cut my dp's short back and sides and dd's bob, but I'm not trained in any way.

ShowOfHands · 04/04/2018 13:25

Yep. I cut my hair, dd's and ds's. I have a curly, messy pixie, ds has a short back and sides and it's longer and a bit shaggy on top and DD has a graduated bob.

When I had long hair I always cut my own. Put it in a ponytail at the front of your hairline, lift the tail, chop where desired. It gives layers. Also if you have long curly hair, you can't really tell if there are mistakes in it.

madamedepoppadom · 04/04/2018 16:22

I do, but it's wavy/curly and doesn't show mistakes much. I can also cut my curly-haired DS's hair (it's currently very long and I use bobbin 's method!), but am scared to touch my straight-haired DS's as it is not only straight but very fine, and looks a right mess if there's anything even slightly wonky about it.

sycamore54321 · 04/04/2018 20:55

I've done the upside down pony tail trim a few times when my hair was quite long. No ill effects but I liked the safety net of still hair long enough for a professional rescue if required! After the main chop, the best way to get a good look is to trim into the ends - you will need someone else to do this - to avoid a blunt finish which shows mistakes much more. Hope the scissors straight upright, perpendicular to the floor, and do lots of little snips upwards as you work along the side. It hides a multitude of sins and gives it a nice finish.

If your hair is very long and you're a little nervous, try cutting off only half the amount you really want to lose. Then you can still get it corrected if you really mess it up.

Elend · 04/04/2018 21:12

I cut my own fringe all the time. Bought a clip off eBay with like a spirit level bit in it to get the middle straight 😂

Seriously considering doing the "mumsnet haircut" but a little bit afraid as I'm between hairdressers atm so have no emergency backup!

Cocolepew · 04/04/2018 21:15

I cut mine and DD1s we both have pixie cuts. I haven't been near a hairdresser in 15 years.

Yep I haven't paid for a haircut for 18 months and won't start now. YouTube is your friend, expect to balls up a little bit at first, don't take too much off at a time and buy good scissors.
Disclaimer - my hair is long, thick and wavy so forgiving if the layers aren't perfect. I wouldn't do it if I had thin or fine hair.

SquirrelWatcher · 04/04/2018 21:18

I've been doing it for a few years, no one's ever told me it looks dreadful, so I'm carrying on Grin
I either put in in a pony and lop a chunk off, or do an upside down trim thing I found on YouTube to create layers Smile this has been great on some occasions and a bit iffy on others, but I never cut it that short that it can't be disguised.
