Coldsores

How do you treat them. I've used Zovirex for years on autopilot but wonder if there is anything else. How do you disguise them for important events? I have a big family wedding coming up and it's highly likely my lip will erupt in time for that Sad

I use Fenistil, but it’s probably just the same stuff as Zovirax under a different name. It stops my cold sores turning into blisters but only if I apply it rigorously every two hours. I get my cold sores up inside my nose - bastards.

Zovirax stickers. They keep the sore moist for longer and so limit the horrid scabby stage. If the sore is on your lips you can put lipstick over them and no one will tell - well, in the photos at least! Leave them on as long, as many days, as you can before very carefully peeling off, maybe in the shower. Use a new one on the day you want to look nice.

Ouch! I've had a few up my nose when I was younger, and around my nose, which is awful when you have a cold too. But (touch wood) for the last few years it's only been lips.

Thank you, I've never heard of stickers.

Super lysine ointment is really moisturizing and definitely reduces the frequency of cold sores. You might want to consider lysine in tablet form if the sores are up your nose.

I found Zovirax did nothing for me, I use blistex or cymex, they're half the price and you can reapply as often as you like, I find both of these dry the blisters out within 48hrs and then help keep the scans moist so limit cracking and bleeding

I use these alone and if I have an event to go to a buy a cheap lipstick so that I can throw it away after

FrangipaniBlue · 03/04/2018 08:55

Also should have said I use them as soon as I get the tingle, I've found on some occasions the tingle doesn't turn into a cold sore and on the others the blisters are very small

I second Lysine. Taking the tablets regularly is the only way I keep the buggers away. Was getting one a month a few years ago.

Skippetydoodah · 03/04/2018 08:57

L-lysine tablets here too. I have also bought acyclovir tablets on line as I've found GP reluctant to prescribe them, but they are not cheap!

BillWagglestaff · 03/04/2018 19:21

I have found the Virulite cold sore zapper thing has completely changed my life with cold sores. As long as I use it as soon as I get a tingle, I find it often completely prevents an eruption. It honestly is the best thing I have ever bought to treat my cold sores by miles. I don't know if it is coincidence, but I now also get them far, far less often.

sportyfool · 03/04/2018 19:22

I use compeed patches at the first tingle , they reduce the amount of time they last ( without its about 2-3 weeks until they are completely gone 😩

I took a few photos of mine when I had a out break
Went on line to lloyds pharmacy uploaded the photos and after a few emails back and forth ordered a course of Aciclovir in tablet for. 400 Mg
I took the course and I haven't had an outbreak since( 2 years ) prior to that was getting regular outbreaks every other month
I take one tablet a week now from when I finnished the original course and it has kept them at bay
If you don't want to pay next time you have a outbreak go to your local STD clinic and you can ask for the tablet form and it will be free

privateporcupine · 03/04/2018 19:42

I use L-lysine tablets too and they really make a difference. Unfortunately I have a cold sore just now because I’d run out of tablets a few months back and never restocked Sad
