Soap users - weird?

Ok this is a bit odd but has anyone who switched to soap found that they smell a bit, well, musty?

I've noticed this over the past couple of weeks. Dh and dcs have been sniffing me regularly and think it's more me being paranoid but there is a definitely a slightly musty smell about me. Not bad so much as 'old' in a generic sense.

I used a bar of Waitrose glycerin soap and was fine it am now using a bar of something I got in Sainsbury's which smelled great originally but now smells of nothing. I feel
clean but slightly off.

It may not be soap of course but it's an obvious change.

Entirely the opposite, shower gel never gets me completely clean.
Has your diet changed, as I sometimes think eating different things makes my skin smell different ( realise that sounds weird now that I've written it!).

TheShaniaTwainExperience · 01/04/2018 23:24

I find the smell of a bar soap doesn’t linger on the skin like a shower gel does but it doesn’t mean we’re not clean- were just programmed by advertising and stuff to think flowery smell= clean. Maybe you’re just getting used to your ‘natural’ smell now that you’re not smelling of ‘ocean breeze’?!

Honestly don’t sweat it (Grin) I’m sure you smell fine Smile

doctorboo · 02/04/2018 00:20

Could it be something in the Sainsbury's soap? What fragrance was it? Have you husband or children sniffed the actual bar and said what they think it smells like? I'm just wondering as you say you didn't have any musty issues with Waitrose soap.

SuckingEggs · 02/04/2018 00:52

No - the opposite for me. Much fresher.

runningdoll · 02/04/2018 06:27

No, I smell much better than I did with shower gel. I do use nice soap though, nicer than I used to buy before. I treated myself to some bars that were recommended on that huge soap thread...perhaps that may help?

Personwithhorse · 02/04/2018 08:01

I avoid shower gel - all that plastic! I think you need to try different brands of soap, I have some locally made one that does not use palm oil

PhyllisWig · 02/04/2018 08:38

I may try a different soap - any excuse ;)

Of course it may not be the soap
at all. It started the same time as my pollen allergy which is viscous this year so could in fact be my nose.

Total opposite. You’re not using dove are you?

PhyllisWig · 02/04/2018 09:41

No not dove. Dd2 uses that for her face but I don't use it at all.

May pick up a body shop one today and test the theory

I'd much rather have soap than gooey shower gel. It's like rubbing gungy oil on to your skin.

CallarMorvern · 02/04/2018 15:05

Actually, having said the above, I tried washing clothes in unperfumed soap flakes and my clothes were left with an odd smell, almost a fatty smell, the old style Ecover laundry liquid also did the same thing, but the new version is fine.

HonkyWonkWoman · 02/04/2018 15:14

Imperial leather smells nice and fresh.

DullAndOld · 02/04/2018 15:15

no I feel much more 'cleansed' when I have used soap not gel.

Tantpoke · 02/04/2018 16:16

My DS smells musty when he has gone to bed with damp hair, smells musty till the next wash, could it be smething like that?

MoorMummy · 02/04/2018 20:23

I converted to soap ( and proper soap powder instead of liquid tabs) after the thread on here. It’s been a revelation to all of the family ( including a previous stinky teenage DS who no longer smells). My favourite soap is Cidal. It’s a citrus scent, I get it at Savers for a quid for two bars. Dove isn’t proper soap, it’s more like a soapy moisturiser.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 02/04/2018 20:29

I hadn’t seen the great MN soap conversion threads but I’ve recently swapped to Aleppo soap. My skin is the best it’s been in years and my Rosacea has almost cleared. I can’t quite get my head around it.

PhyllisWig · 02/04/2018 21:06

Callar yes it's that kind of smell. Just a bit not quite nice.

I switched it and gave it to dd1 in the bath today who pulled a face and said she didn't want to smell like me (she is generally horrid).

Instead I now have 3 bars of body shop soap so will see if that makes a difference.
