How do you stay hydrated on holiday?

I don't meant the type of holiday where you're mostly lounging around a pool/the beach, I mean a city break where you're walking for hours and public loos are not at hand. I worry about this so much, desperately needing a wee and not having anywhere to go, that I don't drink, but then I feel really rubbish, look shirt and I suffer from kidney stones so not a great idea all around. Should I wake up early, drink a whole litre and hope I wee it before we set off?

I know what you mean. Decent public loos in Rome were thin on the ground.

Have a drink in a cafe and use their loos. Most museums have decent loos as well.

Yes just have a drink in a cafe! If its hot weather I drink loads of water during the day but must lose a lot from sweat as i don't tend to need to loo that much, you might find the same so don't worry.

If its that hot then don't walk around for hours! A couple of glasses of water will be fine, drink more when you get back to the hotel.

Regular cafe stops, plus the lobbies of smart hotels, museums, galleries etc.

I load upon the morning, as you suggested, then drink plenty through the day. City centres have lots of loos, in restaurants, hotels, museums , art galleries.

Bottle of water in a back pack, museum and cafe loos. Refill water bottle or rebuy at every opportunity. Don't get dehydrated as then you get miserable - or I do anyway.

Expect all loos in Italy to be revolting, even in museums. However all the water in Rome is fresh so you can top your water bottle anywhere for nothing. I can find a loo anywhere - shopping centres, hotels, restaurants, cafes, museums, shops, big car parks, tourist information.

Also if in hot places build in a siesta - start out early, then v long lunch or back to hotel for a flake out. In italy this is practically encouraged as when you are sightseeing you find everything is shut in the afternoons at random times so you might as well go with the flow.

Learnt this the hard way on my honeymoon - 2 weeks at 40 degrees in Emila-Romagna. I don't do heat. In some places it really was mad dogs and Englishmen in the noonday sun. Suddenly post siesta the most abandoned town would come alive from nowhere.

In tourist cities, department stores, shopping centres, often bookshops, fast food chains like McDonalds, and cafés have loos, as do most train stations and many museums.

Make sure you have a pack of tissues and some wet wipes (or similar) as toilets may well not have paper or adequate handwashing facilities.

Siesta / rest / read in your airconditioned hotel room during the hottest part of the day. Drink plenty of water when you're near a toilet, e.g. in your hotel room or spending a few hours somewhere where you know there are toilet facilities. The rest of the time, keep water on hand (bottle in backpack) and drink in moderation. If you feel hot, dizzy, etc., go back to your hotel for a few hours' rest. You won't enjoy sightseeing even the most beautiful sights if you're feeling unwell, dehydrated or tired.

When you need a wee, buy a drink in a cafe or even just pop in and ask nicely. Or I always pop in places like Burger King, Starbucks, McDonalds etc to use their loo. Big chain places don’t even notice you’re there. It is utterly daft not to drink enough if you get kidney stones — please don’t be so silly!
