Any brands I don't know of but should?

I'm a slim 39 year old doctor who needs work wear.

Bored by Boden and struggling to find the right level of smartness. I love hush for casual wear but need something smarter, I have to attend a lot of meetings but suits would look odd for the patient facing bits of my job. I prefer plain colours or stripes. I don't mind fitted stuff, hate anything too frilly/girly.

Am I missing any brands that would fit the bill outside of the usual Hobbs/phase eight/mint velvet some of which I feel is a bit too mumsy and middle aged for me?

Guidance needed!

Linea af house of Fraser?

twinkledag · 31/03/2018 17:55

I like warehouse. The models on the website make the clothes look dire but in real life their clothes are really nice and suitable for work.

Also 39.

SporkInTheToaster · 31/03/2018 17:58

Massimo Dutti?

notyummy · 31/03/2018 17:58

I like warehouse too but I think it is often a bit short for work wear. What about Baukjen? Plenty of fitted dress plus ruched skirts, casual/smart tops. Or Winser London. Both aimed at workwear market but not ‘suits’ as such. Depends on how much you want to spend really- these two both more expensive than warehouse for example, but not ‘designer’ prices.

Came on Tito say massimo ditto as well . Was a doc - now retired so a bit older than you . Zara and massimo cutting did good trousers and jackets . Look at Scandinavian makes ?

RumTiTum · 31/03/2018 18:10

meandem, uniqlo, whistles

CrackingEggs · 31/03/2018 18:19

I agree with trying Whistles; I find Me&Em overpriced but it may be worth throwing money at a problem.

I like Uniqlo for the sort of basics that Gap and M&S should do. They have a trouser suit that might work for you as it can be made to look casual or smart.

I've not tried Jigsaw for a while but admired a friends suit which she bought from there.

I'm a GP and have found oasis to be quite good. They advertise lots of patterns but in store have plenty of plain and striped stuff. Not much natural fabric to be seen - though that seems to be the same everywhere!

PragmaticWench · 31/03/2018 18:32

LibbyLondon is good for really well cut classics with a twist. I particularly like their skirts and dresses.

Ikeameatballs · 31/03/2018 18:41

Thanks v much.

Had forgotten about baukjen and do like their stuff in catalogues, what's the sizing like?

Not heard of massimo dutti, LibbyLondon or Winser London so will look at those.

I'm the same age and in professional role but don't want to wear a suit (as thankfully I don't have to meet people!)

My workwear at the moment is wrap dresses from sea salt and shirt dresses from Zara. Most of my tips are oasis - I have a few simple ribbed tips which I wear with leather pencil skirt also from oasis. I find the quality ok - not great but better than warehouse.

I used to like next but they never have anything in stock online, I'm predicting they'll go under soon...

Lauren83 · 31/03/2018 18:45

COS and Oliver Bonas, &other stories. I work in private healthcare and usually wear slim chinos, pencil fit trousers etc and a nice blouse or modern looking shirt and get a lot from there

PragmaticWench · 31/03/2018 19:07

Oh and Sezane can be good, but things go out of stock quickly so you have to buy when you see something you like.

Have ordered trousers, a skirt and top from baukjen.

Thanks.

Hope they work for you! I find Baukjen mostly slightly big for size, but more fitted stuff like shirts are more true to size. One down side is they take longer to process refunds than equivalent online shopping places.

cheshiremama89 · 31/03/2018 21:16

Cos, The Kooples, Maje, Sandro

notyummy · 31/03/2018 21:19

If they don’t work would also second the Jigsaw mention further down. I can’t get on with it for casual wear but have found fantastic well cut trousers and skirts from there for work that have last literally years and still look good. Great material and cut.

LunaTheCat · 31/03/2018 21:47

Slightly overweight 53 year old doctor here and I like Toast and Cos. Both can be dressed up and made more casual. A blazer over a dress is a great look.
I think it would be a great study to see how patients viewed doctors according to how they dressed.
