How to do eye make up properly

I wear some make up every day, well for work just foundation, blusher, a bit of eye liner and either lipstick or gloss. When I go out I like to do eye shadow and mascara but I always make myself look tired - rather than making my eyes 'pop'. What might I be doing wrong? You'd think by my age I'd be able to do it!

There’s a YouTube video I think from The Pool about how to do simple eye make-up. I think it’s titled something like ‘for older women’ 😀

It’s called the grown up guide

Have a look at Lisa Eldridge videos on YouTube

Use Warm tones of eyes shadow and a different brush for each colour.

Lots of peoples go to is grey eyeshadow but this looks dirty, flat browns look muddy.

Some for Orange toned browns or Mustard toned neutrals.

Lighter on the lid, darker through the crease, the lighter under the brow.

This is a good tutorial.

Warm or cool tones will depend on your colouring, but if you always use grey or taupe, try some warmer shades and see if that helps.

YouTube is your friend. Just search for different eye make up tutorials and see where you end up (it’s a rabbit hole)

😀😀 thanks for your replies. Will definitely have another look on YouTube. I have looked before but the people that do them are so young and beautiful, it never looks the same when I do it Hmm

have a look at pixiwoo on YouTube. it's two sisters, one is 40 and the other late 30s i think. they're great! they own the make up brush brand real techniques, they're really really good brushes that don't cost the earth.

Wayne Goss is another amazing make up artist that has a great channel with some really helpful tutorials.

after you've seen some looks you like then it's just practise, practise, practise!

ReluctantlyRedundant101 · 31/03/2018 19:35

That's a great tutorial Zachary

My eye make up always looks good (so I’m told) - I go for normal brown eye shadow on top then smudgy dark brown kohl around lashes on top and bottom- looks less harsh than black. Or, on a night out I will do liquid eyeliner in black or dark brown as a base then smudge kohl over the top.
In terms of eye shadow on the lids, it partly depends on your eye shape. If you have
eyelids where you can see most of the lid with your eyes open (think Penelope Cruz) then AVOID very dark browns and greys, go for a mild, lighter neutral like gold or very light brown or taupe. If you can’t see your eyelid much (think Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lawrence, etc) then you can get away with darker colours on top. All just my opinions and I’m no expert, just a big fan of make up!

Stephanie Lange is pretty good on YouTube. I have hooded eyes and follow some of hers
Start with a fairly neutral colour, once you're happy then branch out! I have green eyes and wear anything from grey to purple but tend to go towards red/orange/bronzes
Blending is important and I find a transition shade helps
