Suitable clothing for a 15 yr old attending a funeral

Before anyone says, she wants to go.

All her black dresses (and she wants a dress) are above the knee and I know from previous her father will complain. She wants a smart dress but one that is age appropriate only after looking at the usual places I go to (no big places nearby and have to be price conscious) I’m struggling, does anyone have any ideas, please?.
(Hope this doesn’t come across as snippy and sorry if it does but can you tell I’m trying to keep calm and failing.....and father will judge......)

does she have to have a dress?
Would black school type trousers and a black jacket do?

Foslady · 28/03/2018 18:44

Probably, but she has no black trousers other than jeans! And she has said she would like a dress (more fitting for the deceased)

Thick tights? Long coat? Doesn't have to be black as long as it's a dark, "sober" colour.

Would something like this midi tshirt dress be ok?

Both ASOS and New Look have black dresses in stock for under £20 and can do next day delivery.

DullAndOld · 28/03/2018 18:46

OK yes thick tights and the shorter dress?

Paintbox · 28/03/2018 18:48

ASos do next day delivery and have loads of black midi dresses that are fairly cheap and might suit a teenager

Have you considered a black skirt, blouse and jacket? Think office wear.

My son wore his black school trousers, black jumper and white shirt.

Firstly any dark colour would be fine, not necessarily black. Above the knee on a 15 year old is hardly a crime - especially with opaque tights.

We are just on the way home from a funeral with our 15y did.

She didn't have a entirely black dress or outfit, and most dresses she owns are clingy and short, so would n't be appropriate either.

She opted for some high waisted trousers and a black fitted top - bought from ASOS. Looked nice and she will be able to wear the top with jeans, and the trousers for other smart events such as work experience. The top had some cut outs on the arms so she kept her black denim jacket on in the service, but we struggled to get a completely covered one she liked.

A long cardigan and thick tights? Thats what I ended up getting for DD when the dress was a bit shorter than I thought it would be

What about something like this with opaque tights [http://www.newlook.com/uk/teens/clothing/dresses/teens-black-floral-soft-touch-jersey-swing-dress/p/565650509?comp=Browse]

Thank you so much! She found one in the next clearance sale- does anyone know if their sizing comes up on the larger size? We had to get an 8 and she’s usually a 10.......and are they usually the full 14 days delivery? May be cutting it fine!

And yes, I totally agree about above the knee and opaque tights - honestly most of her dresses come about 4” above the knee (and she’s all leg!) but whenever she’s worn one with opaque tights he’s made some snide comment about it not fitting for much longer........Hmm

Yes next are usually large so you should be ok

Foslady · 28/03/2018 20:42

Thank you - that’s sounding hopeful!
