People with great skin: How do you get great skin?!

I'm 30 and I look, quite frankly, haggard.

I've never had good skin. I first got acne when I was 8 and only really got any control over it when I was about 28, but that seems to be slipping. I found products using glycolic acid really helped control my oily skin which in-turn resulted in less spots and blackheads. I've continued using it but it's not helping these days. I look gaunt, grey and my complexion is rubbish.

I've always hard dark circles under my eyes too. I try to drink at least 1 litre of water a day as I've heard hydration helps this problem but I've never seen a noticeable improvement. I also use a caffeine under eye roller thingy but it also does nothing.

I eat healthily and exercise regularly. I don't get as much sleep as I'd like as I'm a full time working mum to a nearly one year old.

Any tips from people with dewy, glowing, pore-less skin would be very much appreciated. TIA!

It's not an advert!!! Hmm I copied and pasted from the other thread because I wanted to say pretty much the same thing, so why should I type it out again. I have nothing to gain, and I'm hardly the first person to recommend a product, particularly on an S&B thread.

Jeez, just trying to help someone and I get accused of shit.

Luck.

I have been a smoker on and off. Take my make-up off with baby wipes (if I don't fall asleep in it) use moisturizer occasionally or spot zapper for rare period-related spot.

I didn't get stretch marks having my DCS (few on my legs from weight loss but they are negligible), no tiger stripes

I don't wear foundation very often, and use BB cream when I use anything at all. I use highlighter and bronzer sometimes, but not much make-up overall other than mascara.

I do drink a tonne of water and walk miles but can't work out any other reason. It was good as a teenager, and I had never had a whitehead until I was 25. No laughter lines yet either (though my hair is another story going grey and not yet 30)

I am early 40s and people always tell me I have amazing skin. I never really took care of it but I also never smoked, hated sunbathing and drank loads of water, so I think that really accounts for it. In the last few years I have taken more of an interest in face products. I double cleanse and use oils etc, I also eat loads of avocados, oily fish and almonds. I look pretty much the same as I did 15 years ago and much younger than most of my peers, so I definitely think it is worthwhile.

Your bmi is 18.2. Hence haggard. You also have dense muscle mass so fat percentage will be really low. Hence haggard.

StNicholasOfTheCats · 28/03/2018 09:44

yes, in my 30s I lost a lot of weight and had a BMI of 18, I looked terrible in the face, very old and haggard. I have now put weight on and am a size 14 and face looks a lot better!

Tiddlywinks63 · 28/03/2018 09:56

I think much of it is genetics; my mother has beautiful skin and (despite being an ex-smoker and sun worshipper) my skin's not bad for a 65 year old.
I use Ponds Cold cream to remove makeup, soap and water and a cheap moisturiser (Superdrug). I do eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and drink pints of water.
I've been lucky I guess (I couldn't afford the myriad of skin treatments used today 🙂)

It's deffo genetics,,I am 50 and my skin is lovely (according to others as I have No clue what makes good skin)
I eat what I want, I drink a bit, I smoke, I go out in the sun without sunscreen, I don't even know what the stuff y'all put on your face is.
I take no care of any of my skin in any way except for washing daily.

runningdoll · 28/03/2018 16:45

I'm mid 40's with good skin. Genetics definitely play a part, my mother and Grandmother have/had good skin.

I also don't drink (not massively though choice so I'll take the advantages I suppose). Never smoked. Prone to sun-stroke so I'm often in the shade.

A few years ago I started to look tired and old so, among other things, I cut back massively on refined sugar as I read that it has aging affect on skin. I also upped how much I drank through the day, either water or herb teas. I've had a thread vein on my face for years and it was really prominent in my 30's when I was up late and drinking a lot, now it has pretty much disappeared, so on that basis my regime seems to work.

Getting my hair coloured cam also make the difference between my face looking old and tired or not.

Gah81 · 28/03/2018 21:35

I had terrible skin and now I get compliments on mine (barring the acne scars). The only thing that really helped was spending a lot of money on an excellent dermatologist. Do PM me if you would like further details!

Schmoochypoos · 28/03/2018 21:58

My skin is often commented on, I think it’s just mostly genetics as my mum did too. I wash my face with dove soap, use rosehip oil morning and night and then use whatever moisturiser is on offer at the supermarket.

LadyLapsang · 28/03/2018 22:01

You will look better if you put on some weight while still eating healthily. You are underweight. You will look even more haggard as you get older if you don't put on weight. I think it was Jenni Murray of Woman's Hour that stated after a certain age (you are not there yet) you have to decide on your face or your figure (i.e. if you are very slim it will show in your face, unless you intervene).

Sorry everyone for my silence to now. My DS came down with chicken pox since starting my thread and has been keeping me on my toes!

Thank you very much for your continued repies, thoughts ideas and honesty. It's really appreciated.

To those saying I need to healthily increase my weight, I do agree but that is very much easier said than done. If I gain any weight or lose muscle definition all hell breaks out in my brain. I'd love to but don't have the tools to do so. I appreciate it's fundamental to looking better but that's out of my control (for now?).

As for all the tips, products, techniques and youtubers you've listed, I'm going to go through them one by one and see what I can implement... hopefully all of them! Even the 'get more sleep' tip, which at the mo seems impossible. Just last night I was showering at 1am as my DS vomited a whole bottle of milk in my hair and down my bra! Confused

I have really good skin but only in the last few years (37 now). I think it is drinking ALOT of water, eating well and exercise. Also not smoking and not using sun beds helps. Plenty of sleep,

Drumknott · 29/03/2018 22:14

Genes, and Asian Beauty - check out the Snail skincare threads here. And sleep (sorry). But understanding skincare really helps.

Snog · 29/03/2018 22:20

Combination of HRT and Glossier skin care.
My 18 year old is jealous of my skin and I am 50 Grin
