Yes the base colour is darker for the plum shade. The first number tells you how dark it is and '3' is darker than '5' (1 is black, 10 is light blonde)

LardLizard · 26/03/2018 14:37

What does 515 stand for ?

Yes, it will result in a darker colour, I've used that shade myself before & it is very dark, like the darkest darkest brown/black purple.

LardLizard · 26/03/2018 14:38

That’s what I was thinking black is 1 and blonde is 10
So that’s why I thought perhaps it’s darker
Doesn’t look different really on the packs though in terms of darkness

The first 5 is the level. A level 5 hair colour is mid to dark brown. The 1 is tone 1 usually = ash, so a cool brown, rather than a warm one, the second 5 is also tone and usually means mahogany ie a cool red tone.

A level 3 is almost very dark brown, almost black. The 1 is ash again and the 6 is violet, so a cool dark purple tone.

You could always try a test strand if you're not sure.

I have a level 5 purple but mine is a professional line colour, I'm not sure what the equivalent in box dye would be. I use 30ml 55/66 and 30ml 0/88, to get a shade similar to this www.google.co.uk/search?q=wella+deep+purple&rlz=1C1AVNG_enGB674GB730&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=XbmVx-BUJbYMnM%253A%252CFaIIL5aYXMLW1M%252C_&usg=__qSgroiOgaUNgj6dWnjUP5-2mxjw%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjqy-iDkIraAhXB1iwKHY96AEIQ9QEIfzAA#imgdii=XuWScXhBwZ50SM:&imgrc=XbmVx-BUJbYMnM:

The numbers are the same in most lines, so 5/68, 5/66 and 5/48 will all give a reddish purple tone.

I use Castings Plum all the time. My hair is completely grey/white and it comes out a fab deep plum colour, not as black/purple. I get loads of comments on the colour, often from random strangers who stop me to say they love it.

Knowivedonewrong · 26/03/2018 15:16

It will come out darker. I used to use it. It will fade very quickly.

LardLizard · 26/03/2018 15:39

Not sure if I’m brave enough to try it

Frequency what actual brand is that ? Do you do it yourself or at the salon ?

Wella.

DD helps me with it, we do it at home but I am a hairdresser, so I know which developer to use, how to mix it, which line to use etc and then DD applies it for me, since I can't see the back of my head.

It's pretty straightforward, tbh. Application is no different to box dyes, it's just a case of knowing whether to use a quasi or permanent and which developer to use. There are instructions in the box, telling you how to mix it and how long to leave it on, the same as with box dyes.

LardLizard · 26/03/2018 18:39

Frequency id probably get it done first time at least at a salon perhaps go for semi permanent first
Not really sure the difference between semi and Demi
Do you find it’s harder to dress though because if your hair colour in terms of knowing what to wear ?
As I do find brown quite neutral and easy to dress and wear alotnof colours

My hair colour at the time was already coloured a 'muddy' brown colour, I'm not great at applying hair dye, a bit cack handed, so its more my fault the results were uneven. On the whole it left my hair really shiny & well conditioned & it did wash up after a few washes, but most dyes, even permanent ones do on my hair.

Frequency · 27/03/2018 15:00

I mainly wear black, so I've never had an issue but on the occasions I've wore a colour no-one has ever mentioned that my hair clashes with my outfit. It's not something I've ever thought about, tbh.
