Basic trainers help

Please can I have some suggestions for new trainers.
I’m not really a trainers girl (except for actual running trainers) so have zero clue about trainer fashions but I need something for chasing after my toddler.
Looking for something that won’t make my size 8 feet look even more enormous (no huge platforms etc), comfortable and that is not frumpy. Doesn’t have to be achingly hip, but want to have something that’s vaguely fashionable. Will most likely be worn with jeans, denim shorts, casual skirts. Perhaps grey or pink.

Any ideas very much appreciated. Are converse still cool?!

You could try New Balance (they do lots of greys and pinks), Vans Old Skool, Adidas Haven or Nike Internationalist. I'd avoid Converse personally as they're quite dated. And also not very comfy.

I bought some in Clarks (advantage of not being branded all over); and Marks and Spencer do some too.

PetiteMarseillaise · 26/03/2018 13:02

I've got Converse and Vans, kind of plimsoll shaped ones but I fancied a change and have ordered these Adidas ones. I like the slip on, lace-free look. Should go with practically everything in my wardrobe (I hope).

Thanks very much. I think I am leaning towards some of the Adidas styles. Does anyone know what they’re like size-wise? My feet are definite 8s and on the wider side - sort of rectangular at the toe end. Attractive!! Confused

Pretty standard sizing. Im a 6 and always find the 6 fits nicely. You would definitely be better off in the Adidas with wider feet than in something like a converse. Have a look at the Adidas Gazelles, I've seen quite a few in pinks and greys.

LockedOutOfMN · 26/03/2018 22:56

Nike Air Max are good for wide feet.

You can buy "men's" ones if you find they fit better as no one knows/cares. However, I think all women's trainers go up to - at least - an 8 in the U.K. now.

You could also try Skechers trainers; they're really comfortable (and also come up wide).

RusholmeRuffian · 27/03/2018 21:36

Gazelles are pretty true to size (I also have wide feet). Indoor Gazelles tend to come up smaller though. adidas Bermudas are more comfortable.

Have a look at the Size? Website, they have a sale on. Also check out Sneakersnstuff or Hanon. Lots of options on all of those.

peonylover22 · 27/03/2018 22:25

Thanks. I was thinking Gazelles. Then my friend suggested Superga - not really a trainer but would fulfil my brief of running around the park after a toddler shoes. What do you all think of Superga?!

I find Superga really uncomfortable

I had to break in my supergas but found them wider than adidas gazelles.

ShovingLeopard · 28/03/2018 08:18

I love Supergas but can't wear them, as I have narrow feet and find them way too wide. The gold, silver and rose gold are gorgeous. I like the Adidas slip ons linked to above. I had Gazelles back in the late 90s, and found them very flat and they rubbed the back of my feet and never broke in. Maybe they have updated the design a bit since, though. Or it could just be my funny feet!

sportyfool · 28/03/2018 09:59

I prefer white converse for spring but also have Adidas gazelles and new balance . They are more true trainery though .

sanitygirl · 29/03/2018 12:30

Love Nike Internationalist

Superga and Converse kill my feet - too flat and narrow, while also strangely heavy.

BobLoblawLawBlog · 29/03/2018 12:48

Agree with sanitygirl about heaviness of Superga etc. Internationalist are ridiculously comfy and feel light too.

TheExtraGuineaPig · 29/03/2018 13:24

I'd vote for New Balance - so comfy and not too much like you're off to the gym. Lovely colours etc. I don't have especially wide feet so can't vouch for that

moofolk · 29/03/2018 13:39

Adidas shell toes (superstars) are better than Gazelle / Samba style for wider feet. I wear 5 1/2 and I am a 5 1/2.
Never know which size to get in other brands!
She'll toes are cool without being all big-deal trainers. My fave are black with white stripes. Gold logo on tongue. Best street trainers I've ever had. Comfy and go with everything.
Converse are narrow and a pain to break in.

moofolk · 29/03/2018 13:40

But plenty of trainer aficionado friends say that Nike are the comfiest brand.
I've never had any but my DP and kids wear them

CallarMorvern · 29/03/2018 13:47

I like Converse slip-ons and New Balance. Love my black suede NB, think they are 373s (but not sure). Superga I just don't like the fit of them. I'm a wide 8, occasional 9 and wear a Converse 8 and NB 9.

DD wears Adidas Superstars for school and has sized up in them as her normal size was a very close fit. But she says they are the comfiest thing ever lol.

Clarabumps · 29/03/2018 20:02

I like Nike Air max.
I also wear Adidas Superstars but have to size up in them as they're notoriously small.
