Straightening treatments- keratin etc

Are they damaging? I'm very sick of my hair texture- coarse & dry. I have a lot of grey & have it coloured, so it has that grey hair lank texture. It just occurred to me that these treatments might help...

I've had a Brazilian keratin treatment a couple of times. It straightened my wavyish hair a lot and reduced volume by maybe 50%. It was way more manageable and quick to dry, no need of straightener or frizz tx but you might be alarmed if your hair is not too thick to start off with. It lasted 4-5 months and the second one lasted longer.

I’ve had them about four times. The first one Yuko and it was great. I just had to wash my hair and let it dry naturally and afterwards people would ask if I had been to the hairdressers. It lasted over six months.?I had it done a second time and it didn’t take as well. The next time, I was concerned about not damaging my hair and opted for a L’Oreal one. It was ok, not as sleek but much better than my natural hair. The following time I opted for the L’Oreal one again and it didn’t rwork. The hairdresser tried it again but again it didn’t take to my hair. The same hairdresser did all of them and is experienced. I then spent a few years trying to restore my hair that was literally snapping off. My hair was terribly damaged. It has been over five years since the last one and I’m contemplating a twelve week blow dry.

They do not damage if done properly. Over time my hair has drastically improved with the treatments.

Thebirthdayparty · 26/03/2018 11:45

Perhaps it depends on the type of hair. Mine were done properly. I paid hundreds for them by someone experienced enough for her flight tickets to be paid to go abroad to do people’s hair (not mine!). She was absolutely doing it correctly and yes over time, my hair started to snap off and got very thin towards the ends. It is fully grown out now but I wouldn’t have it done again, not least because I hated not washing my hair for seventy two hours st the beginning when it already stuck to my head after the straightening process was done initially.

The twelve week nlowdrys look much kinder to hair and I am thinking of researching these more now. They still cost over two hundred and the price is making me hesitate.

Thanks everyone. Don't think these are for me! You've helped me make up my mind x

Really? I do it myself after paying £150 for it in a salon. The results from doing it myself are much better. I wouldn't do a Brazilian treatment but Keratin treatments are brilliant.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 27/03/2018 09:37

BanyanTree could you tell me what you use please.

bastardkitty · 27/03/2018 09:37

My friend had it done recently. It looks fantastic and she loves it.

Rtmhwales · 27/03/2018 09:38

I get Japanese chemical straightening done every six months and my hair is silky smooth now, no damage.

BanyanTree · 27/03/2018 10:08

Cocchocco Gold from Amazon.

Honestly, I do it myself and have never had better hair. It is thick and glossy. I get told I have fab hair all the time.

BanyanTree · 27/03/2018 10:08

Cocochocco

myusernamewastakenbyme · 27/03/2018 21:05

Thank you

Ladybirdbookworm · 28/03/2018 00:18

I came on just to say I loved my first Brazilian blowout and it lasted approx 7 months
I just had it redone a month ago and my hair is wrecked.
I rang the salon to complain and the owner said she wouldn't have advised me to have it done when my hair is highlighted !!!!
Shame she wasn't at work that day to tell me that ......i also agree with a PP who said about the 72 hrs of lank hair sticking to your head ....I think that had just about finished me off any way. So no don't do it .

BanyanTree · 28/03/2018 06:44

Are Keratin treatments and Brazilian blowouts the same thing? Is a BB the same as Japanese bonding?

I just can't see how a Keratin treatment wrecks your hair. Essentially all you are doing is infusing conditioner into your hair with heat. Unless the hairdresser is overusing the hot irons? It isn't a chemical treatment.

Mrstwiddle · 28/03/2018 07:00

Definitely damaged my hair, had to stop using them :(

TuftedLadyGrotto · 28/03/2018 07:04

I have japanese straightening done every 4 months. For over a year now. It's changed my life. My hair is thick, frizzy, course and wavy.

Now I can wash a blow dry and not even need to straighten. Even I leave it dry naturally I just run straighteners over it lightly.

And it survives the rain now!

Mine is called Xtenso.

heidipi · 28/03/2018 10:34

I've used the Coccocho one quite a few times - once or twice a year for the last few years and not had problems with visible damage. My hair is never longer than shoulder length though. A hairdresser winced when I told him what I used once but there's no way I can afford £200 a time! My hair is chin level now so I'm debating whether it's worth it as it's much shorter - I'd love not to have big round hair after every wash before I get to work with the straighteners.

Has anyone got experience of using keratin treatments on shorter hair?

TuftedLadyGrotto · 28/03/2018 11:31

Xtenso costs me £93 a time.

User247 · 28/03/2018 13:37

I have afro hair and use the Arosci Keratin treatment. Doesn't damage hair, the formula is blowdried on the hair to smooh frizz, prevent breakage and washes out over 4/5 months. It works in straight hair too.

User247 · 28/03/2018 13:38

Heidi you may pay less as not so much of the formula is being used on your hair and the treatment won't take as long as someone with long hair

Itellyou · 29/03/2018 12:33

User 247 where do you get this from?

Bugjune · 29/03/2018 12:59

I used one of those kits off Amazon and it worked like a charm, the mornings of battling with my ball of frizz were over. Unfortunately it did leave a lot of breakage, the ends would literally snap off in my fingers.

I've subsequently learnt that my hair dislikes protein, it's moisture that it craves, so not surprising the keratin treatment had that effect!

User247 · 29/03/2018 15:37

Itellyou

Google Arosci Keratin Reconstructuring treatment in your area and you should find a salon
