Best make up counter for bridal makeover?

Nervously posting in here as I am mainly a slob who rarely wears make up.

But I get married in 7 weeks and need some help. I am 40 and my skin is ok but I will need some help to keep up with my fabulous charity shop find dress which ia swishier and spandaglier than I thought I would have.

I can't afford and wouldnt want a make up artist doing me on the day. But am planning a trip to either Debenhams or HOf for a make over and will buy some new products.

I don't want a thick layer of make up or loads of that contouring gubbins. Probably nice eyes, a pretty lipgloss and fresh, dewy looking skin.

My skin is OK for my age. Faint laughter lines around my eyes and mouth. I don't tend to be spotty. My skin and especially my eyes can be a bit sensitive. But my T area can be a tad oily.

Also skincare. Is there anything I can buy without a small bank loan that will give me a lovely, healthy glow? I tend to use No 7 products atm. A face wash once a day, day or night cream and a serum if I do wear make up.

Make up consists of a bit of eyeshadow, mascara and bronzer usually.

If anyone can help please and thank you!

Definitely Bobbi Brown. I had a free bridal makeup lesson and the assistant was lovely. She really listened to me and I was y happy with the whole experience.

sourpatchkid · 24/03/2018 21:01

I second Bobbi Brown - I really don't think you'll find better for bridal make up (and I've tried most of them)

thethoughtfox · 24/03/2018 21:04

I third Bobbi Brown. My friend had a trial here and loved it - very natural, bridal. She also went to Illamasqua - very fabulous but not traditional bridal!

JustGettingStarted · 24/03/2018 21:07

I was going to suggest Bobbi Brown only after reading your title. Then I read your post and your age and was certain.

suze28 · 24/03/2018 21:13

Bobbi Brown would also be my suggestion and definitely watch Hannah Martin tutorials on YouTube. She's their MUA and is totally gorgeous. She shows off natural looks so you could learn a few more hints and tips from her aswell.

Ooh thank you all so much. Bobbi brown it is then. Dd (13) was adamant Benedit or Urban Decay was the way forward but I suspect she was hankering after the make up when I end up never wearing it again.

Will have a look at prices before I go tho. I suspect it will be very spendy compared to No 7 3 for 2s.

Its very spendy isn't it.

I have really reactive eyes so going to stick with my usual mascara. Was thinking foundation, an eye palette and some brightening powdery stuff maybe? I have a little Benefit bronzer I got in my birchbox and also a benefit mascsra I need to test out for sensitivity.

I don't mind buying stuff but I won't use it much after so seems a waste. I hope they have some little trial samples they dish out 😂😂

Their eyeshadow pencils are £23 and great as a colour wash over the eyelid; might be less spendy and of more use than a £50 palette (their palettes are gorgeous though!)

Frouby · 24/03/2018 21:40

A colour wash? Wtf is a colour wash. I am useless with make up. And techniques. I can do foundation, a couple of colours on my eyelids, used to be able to do eye liner and a bit of bronzer or blusher.

I don't really do my eyebrows. I don't wear lipstick or gloss and I have never used concealer. I am not a well groomed person.

I think I better take photos, lots of notes and practice a lot before the day.

Literally colour in on your eyelids and blend in with your ring finger, no need for brushes.

Frouby · 24/03/2018 21:45

I could probably manage that then. Will book an appointment tomorrow.

You get 15% off your first order if you buy online at Bobbi Brown so I'd be tempted to get them to write down the products and the shades that were used on you and buy the bulk of it online (you get free shipping as well). Blush

pestilentialboundary · 24/03/2018 21:49

Bare minerals are also good for grown up make up.

Check out the counter girls and go to the counter of the person who looks best/ does not look orange and scary.

sourpatchkid · 24/03/2018 22:01

Your daughters suggestions are definitely wrong!

It is expensive but it genuinely lasts forever (I still have my gel eyeliner from my wedding, it's still half full and I've been married 7 years now!)

Don't buy everything they try to sell you but the basics are great

mommybear1 · 24/03/2018 22:02

I recommend Clarins but it's a good idea to have a general view of what you want on the day. You mention skincare pre the day I recommend Liz Earle's hot cloth cleanser and facial oil. Bear in mind that on the day you will want a primer (if you don't use one already) as you won't want your make up to slip on the day. I also tend to go red after a few beverages Wink so I needed a green colour corrector under my make up I really recommend the NYC colour corrector palette they have correctors for a range of issues. Have a lovely day!

mommybear1 · 24/03/2018 22:08

Sorry OP I have just seen you are booked at Bobbi Brown they are fab but expensive I also find some products better than others bit of a mix and match their shimmer brick is amazing and the eye liners are marvellous (don't be put off by the price they do last forever!). Please do follow the golden rule of asking the assistant to write down the products used and do not be pressured into buying straight of the bat - I find the make overs in store look different in normal daylight!

Fullfatlatte · 25/03/2018 09:45

Frouby Def Bobbi Brown. You don’t have to purchase all products, key ones I can highly recommend are the Vitamin Enriched Face base (it’s a wonderful moisturiser & fan base for makeup). Their foundation stick is my favourite (applied with their round foundation brush, expensive but def worth every penny), & the tinted moisturiser gives a fab glow to the skin. Another must have is their Smoky eyes mascara & their Pot Rouges (they double up as a lipstick), I adore the Pale pink & Pretty powerful. Have fun, you won’t regret going to BB.

I also second Hannah Martin, I follow her & Amy Conway on Instagram 😀

Thank you all. Will let you know how I get on. It won't be until after the Easter holidays though.

Bobbi Brown will write down all the products and shades on a face chart for you.
