Seriously... I have to go to prom!?

As a year 11 tutor I will be attending year 11 prom this year. The theme is the Oscars how original and the girls are going full out for it (like they do every year).

So wise women of MN what, as a 33 year old, 5'2, size 10/12 with a pixie cut, do I wear to this?

I don't want to look like Im trying to dress like a year 11 ( think full length ball gowns) but want to look stylish/ sophisticated and able to go out on the town in it afterwards with my fellow teachers.

We were thrilled when DD's teachers joined in with the occasion. Their "prom" started with a cocktail reception including parents. Parents wore lounge suits and what they would wear to the opera or a smart party. I can't link but for example I wore an emerald very simple phase 8 dress with a black beaded pashmina and smart black heels. The male staff and the girls' plus ones wore black tie. The plus one's arrived at about 9.30 for the party/dancing.

The girls looked lovely and mostly wore lovely dresses that weren't very expensive. Mostly Asos and similar but lots of long ones and a few jump suits too.

Hi whatsgoing the few times I've tried a 50s style swing dress I've just get super hippy in them and that they just make me look wide rather than hourglass like I think they should.

I love the tuxedo one! You could wear a black camisole if it was too low? although personally I don't think it is

MrsBartlettforthewin · 24/03/2018 11:21

Raindropes that sounds lovely 😊 I'm looking forward to seeing them all dressed up. We go to a lovely local country hotel for it and from the dresses the girls have shown me so far they are all going to look so beautiful.

I’d go for looking understated and cool in the trouser options as opposed to dresses. Nothing worse than turning up in the same outfit as a teenager.

MrsBartlettforthewin · 24/03/2018 11:23

Monkeeme that's true and would maybe link better with style of the evening.

If I go with one of these jumpsuits how would people accessorise them? What sort of make-up and shoes?

Iheart that's what I was thinking. I really don't want to look like I'm trying to blend in with the kids.

I would personally go for some really nice diamonte drop earrings simple and elegant, maybe a diamonte cuff - no necklace

Esker · 24/03/2018 11:34

For year 11 prom I usually wear a knee length dress and some kind of wrap or jacket. Accessorize with big jewellery so that you are making an effort to 'dress up', without looking like a wannabe prom queen 😂. I always love seeing the kids' outfits as they make such an effort and look so smart!

Maursh · 24/03/2018 11:35

What about a black A-line dress, boring but smart and not likely to be remarked upon. Suits all occasions.

MrsBartlettforthewin · 24/03/2018 11:38

Maursh the problem with that is I often where that sort of dress to school as my kind of uniform.

I think you will look cool in the tuxedo jumpsuit, the kids will probably love that too and it will be different from the girls - perfect!

MrsBartlettforthewin · 24/03/2018 11:45

Thanks Monkee. Going to order them both and see which one I like best on 😊

Phase 8 have a sale on. Saw this jumpsuit.

I prefer the first, I think the material of the trousers on the mesh one will wrinkle and crease terribly when you sit down.

Monkee4 · 24/03/2018 12:19

Good luck - let us know how you get on - I love jumpsuits but sadly don't have the waist anymore lol!x

MrsBartlettforthewin · 24/03/2018 12:28

Will do. Thanks all for your fab suggestions everyone
