Curly hair help

I've just acquired a full head of curly hair. I have no idea how to look after curly hair, having never had it! Any tips on how to look after it, keep it from going frizzy, how to style it etc?

Use gentle shampoo (no SLS, parabens etc.) to look after hair condition and silicone free conditioner to avoid coating and weighing down hair with product that builds up and doesn't wash out easily.

I then use boots curl creme in very small amounts to reduce frizz and define curls.

It took 2-3 months of the above regime for my curls to start looking really nice.

Oo thank you! Will go to Boots tomorrow for Curl Creme. I've never heard of it, this is all new to me...

Mine’s natural. This is what I do : I wash it twice a week with conditioner only.
Dry with diffuser on hairdryer or better still the blowers in the car (better results for some reason!)
Never brush or comb it unless wet
At other times just finger comb it
I use Wella Shockwaves mousse( curly )
I don’t know if acquired curly hair should be treated the same mind you
Hopefully someone with same as you will come on and advise
I suppose a lot depends on hair type too
Enjoy your new hair !Smile

Thanks eggncress mine is natural too. Basically I was ill last year and all my long straight shiny hair fell out, my new hair is coming through and it's curly. Like real proper curls. I had it cut on Monday to get the last of my old straight wispy bits cut off and it's just accentuated how curly my new hair is.

Thanks for the tips, will give anything a try!

Yes to the no shampooing a pp mentioned.
If your hair is coarser you can leave the conditioner in. I always air dry.
If you don’t want to wash it every day, steaming your hair over the kettle does what brushing does for straight hair. It gets the curl back in the right pattern and gives it a re joosh. Then a little curl cream, serum whatever.
It’s more like a lifestyle or an interest than straight hair managementWink

Congratulations on getting well, and welcome to the Curley club.

Thanks! So much to learn, ha. My old hair was very much wash and brush! I'll steam my head over the kettle in the morning Smile

Glad you are better ... it must feel strange your hair growing back curly. Do you like it ?

BlumAndFlip · 23/03/2018 07:41

It really, really depends on the type of hair what products work best. The Curly Girl method (there is a book about it www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2322090.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XCurly+Girl+the+Handbook.TRS0&_nkw=Curly+Girl+the+Handbook&_sacat=0 is quite a good starting point. She advocates no shampoo - but I have really fine hair and actually need to wash mine every 3 days or so otherwise it does start to get weighed down.

Boots curl creme is also too heavy for my hair - I use cheap cheerful EcoGel from amazon.

One thing is to try and add your products whilst your hair is really wet (I actually do it in the shower) which helps prevent frizziness.

I also use the Curly Girl Method - I found the Yes to (I used Yes to Blueberries) range very good, you can find it in Boots, and Tresemme Undone, the silicone free stuff. I co-wash, leave to dry naturally and usually style with some conditioner. You might need to hunt around for a different hairdresser, not all that many hairdressers know their stuff with curly hair. On the plus side, it doesn't need cutting as often!

CastielIsMyAngel · 23/03/2018 17:16

Thanks everyone! Lots to try.

eggncress it's been so hard, I've gone from this to this to this in the space of 8 months and it's a big adjustment! I'm not sure if I like it at the minute, still coming to terms with it!

Your curls are gorgeous. Is there a hormonal link (don't answer if you don't want to)? My brother's hair went curly when he went through puberty and I know several people whose hair went curly in pregnancy.

CastielIsMyAngel · 23/03/2018 18:30

Thanks Count I literally have no idea why it grew back curly after managing to be straight for 48 years! I'm due a blood test soon, will ask the nurse if she knows the science behind it
