Teeth Whitening

Have looked at a few old threads about this but would like some up to date advice from anyone who has recently tried to whiten Smile

I have a graduation and wedding coming up in the summer and would really like to get started on improving my tea stained gnashers!

I understand the most popular options are:

  1. Crest whitening strips
  2. Dentists bleach trays
  3. Laser

I’m torn between 1 and 2. I’ve discounted 3 as it doesn’t have great reviews unfortunately.

My dentist is offering the trays and gel for £350 and said the gel can be bought online for much cheaper than in-clinic thereafter (isn’t it nice when they’re honest?!).

Crest strips will have to be purchased from the US + shipping.

Any thoughts/advice/tales of horror/success stories?

I've done number 2 and found it really good! Amazed at how little of the original gel I've had to use each time and the results are good.

I did find my teeth a little sensitive the morning after, so used some toothpaste for sensitive teeth and it went. Also make sure you wipe any excess gel off your gums after putting the tray in as it can irritate if not.

Bluntness100 · 22/03/2018 12:38

I used the crest whitening strips. The proffessional ones are the most effective. In fact excellent. I bought them from the crest whitening shop, a distributor here in the uk

I did post a link a while ago but some daft folks complained the site wasn't secure, completely ignoring the fact you didn't pay on the site, you were taken to world secure pay off site to pay and it was fully secure and verified by the bank. It was Aibu though.🤣

Personally I'd recommend. I also did the dentist thing years ago and it was no where near as effective.

danTDM · 22/03/2018 12:41

I have done all. Lazer far the best. (But I have uneven teeth) Still very white two years on.

OyO · 22/03/2018 13:07

Ooooo it was one a piece then dan threw a spanner in the works Grin

Interesting that I can get the strips from a UK distributor.

You can't get the strips in the UK they're banned. They'll destroy your tooth enamel.

I really want my teeth to be whiter but I won't go near those strips.

JintyandtheJs · 22/03/2018 13:11

Use whitestrips4u

OyO · 22/03/2018 18:29

I’m just looking for the top up gels to buy online like my dentist recommended and they seemingly are banned too. So companies selling them are dodgy looking and there’s a very good chance they’re selling counterfeit stuff.

Now I’m thinking I might need a new dentist too Grin

I used the strips from the US for years. Lived there ages.
My teeth are fine and regulated in the US , that is enough for me ( especially as l lived there so long) Grin

whoareyoukidding · 22/03/2018 18:45

I used custom-made trays from my dentist and it really made a difference to my teeth , they looked lovely. Two and a bit years later and they still look good - never looked like Ross from friends.

MoreProsecco · 22/03/2018 18:51

I had trays made from the dentist about 6 years ago & top up every year or two. I've had good results & you can do things more gradually rather than with the lasering.

EssexMummy123456 · 22/03/2018 20:59

I've tried all three - the whitestrips pro a couple of times and would use again, wouldn't bother with the trays again, the laser (if done by a dentist) hurts quite a bit for a few hours after, gives very bright white results but also fades quite quickly - but there might be another option - I recently bought the Phillips Sonicare Diamond toothbrush as recommended on here (Boots £90) and use that with arm & hammer whitening toothpaste and have been really pleased with the results.

OyO · 22/03/2018 21:23

Hmmmm I think I’ll start with the strips. Seems different teeth get different results so I’ll start with the cheaper option and if that doesn’t work I’ll move on to the trays.

How does this site look? I don’t fancy being ripped off/bank details stolen/sold counterfeit goods.

I use the crest strips and really rate them. I'd recommend going to the dentist first for a checkup solely to get the plaque removal they do at the end. This means you have a clean slate for whitening and it whitens your teeth rather than the layer of plaque on top.

Brittanyspears · 27/03/2018 18:39

Crest white strips are the best. I have also used the seller you posted OP since they clamped down on ebay-great service.

Brittanyspears · 27/03/2018 18:41

And yes to what heartshaped said. See the hygenist first check your teeth are healthy and do it. I always gets comments on my teeth. However i have sensitive teeth so space out the strips to avoid sensitivity. My Dh had it done at the dentist and was rolling around in agony, so id never go that route!

Daffodils78 · 28/03/2018 05:29

A scale and polish and a good whitening toothpaste and you shouldn't need them bleached.

Or get them air flow cleaned to remove every little stain, it is done with water and air so doesn't cause the damage to enamel that whitening products do

Liaoyang · 28/03/2018 06:13

My dentist offered me 2 types of tray, either Zoom or Enlighten. She really pushed the Enlighten so I went with that despite it being about £360, which was £100 more than Zoom. It really worked well for me and significantly lightened my teeth but you need to sleep with the trays for 2 weeks. The kit you take home is overpackaged to look like you are getting value for the £360 but is essentially 2 syringes of bleach that probably cost pennies. The money is in the trays and dentist’s time. You get to keep the trays and hopefully I can buy more stuff elsewhere. DH did it after me but me couldn’t sleep with them in and his colour barely changed. DSD uses Crest strips from the US that she buys on eBay and her teeth are amazingly white but she’s young.

OyO · 30/03/2018 12:16

Ok so I went and had a scale and polish then got some trays fitted by my dentist. I’m on day 3 of doing the at home treatment and haven’t experienced sensitivity yet.

Teeth definitely look cleaner but haven’t noticed a change in shade. I took a photo before starting and will take another at the end of the two weeks to compare.

If this doesn’t work I’ll try the Crest strips.

I’m using Opalescence. It’s 35% Carbomide Peroxide. It’s only a 30 min per day one, I chose it for this reason as there is no way I could handle sleeping with the tray in which seemed to rule out Enlighten.

Fingers crossed there’ll be some change, I’ll let you all know how it goes Smile

I have recently been looking into the same. My teeth are quite yellow - unfairly so I feel since I don't touch coffee, alcohol or cigarettes - so I thought it was time to do something about it.

I started off with charcoal toothpaste but haven't seen any result so brought up the topic at my dentist check up a couple of weeks back. She also suggested trays at £350 and said that as long as you don't lose the trays it's a much cheaper long term option as you only have to buy the bleach in the future. I'ave heard a lot of positive stories about Zoom (and it comes on Groupon) so I asked about that and was told that after 3 years they'd just got shot of it at the practice because of the comparatively high number of people who had been coming back complaining of sensitivity as compared to the dental trays.

So I signed up to the traditional dentist trays. Got to wait to do the impressions in early May as need to get a couple of fillings done first.

I've not paid for it as yet so I'll be interested to see how you get on before I bite the bullet.

specialsubject · 30/03/2018 18:47

Buy the yank strips and you may not be able to bite anything as hard as a bullet...

JDSTER · 30/03/2018 21:45

That’s useful userofthiswebsite. I’ve wondered about whether to get trays or do zoom (Dentist offer both).

OyO · 31/03/2018 10:42

I’ll definitely let you know how it goes, user. It’s such a big investment, no point throwing good money away.

It does seem to work differently for everyone though so even if it doesn’t make much of a change to my teeth it could improve yours maybe?

I’ll post a before and after at the one week mark so you can see what you think Smile
