Can I, a plus size woman, pull off ruched skirts?

Morning everyone!

My intention with this thread was to post a photo of me wearing my ruched skirt today, to get your honest thoughts, but my partner is still asleep with the curtains closed so it's too dark to take a photo.

Despite my title, I am fully on board with people wearing whatever that want and feel comfortable in. This is purely about my own hang ups.

Today I'm wearing a Baukjen black ruched skirt, size 16. Does anyone else of a similar size wear ruched skirts and feel confident in them?
When you see bigger women in ruched skirts, do you think they can be flattering?

Sounds nice, a colleague larger than a 16 wears them and looks great.

SukiTheDog · 21/03/2018 07:52

Yes. Absolutely. They make them in that size so, that’s a sign!

GrannyGrissle · 21/03/2018 07:55

I honestly wouldn't call a 16 plus sized (unless you are 5ft or so) and would imagine a ruched skirt would look lovely OP. Do you feel confidant and happy in it?

Peanutbuttercups21 · 21/03/2018 08:03

Yes, it can look great!

For some reason they look awful on me (size12) yet fab on SIL (size16)

It depends on your shape, more than size IMO

I just look flabby_flat botted with too wide hips....

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 21/03/2018 08:33

Really depends on your shape. I've got quite a bit and not toned tummy so they look awful on me. But someone who was a size 16 or bigger who had a big bum or thighs but a small waist could look amazing in them.

Trills · 21/03/2018 08:40

You can absolutely pull it off.

I think that "flattering" is a bit of a con, it always seems to be code for making you look thinner. It's rarely used in the context of looking exactly the size you are, while looking good.

Mulberrysilk · 21/03/2018 08:47

I think it's more about what shape you are and less about what size you are. I'm size 10/12 with an apple tummy. They are awful on me. They might be better in a pear.

PaperdollCartoon · 21/03/2018 11:16

I think it’s a shape rather than a size thing. Hourglass? Most likely works. Apple shaped? Probably not.

Annabelle4 · 21/03/2018 11:34

I think it would depend on your height.

sanitygirl · 21/03/2018 11:46

I disagree that they don't work on an apple shape. I'm a size 14, tall, good legs, fat tummy. I love a ruched skirt with leggings and a loose top - one of the outfits I feel best in.

sinceyouask · 21/03/2018 11:50

Do you feel comfortable in it? When you look at yourself wearing it, do you like what you see? If both are yes then you are pulling it off.

RooKangaroo · 29/03/2018 19:11

Thank you all for your comments!

It is VERY comfortable to wear, and I did feel nice in it. I kept fidgeting with it during the day a bit, but I think that's because I never wear skirts, let alone something like that, and I wanted to make sure it wasn't shifting and showing my knickers.

I'm quite tall - 5ft 9, and a pear shape. My weight is mainly around my hips, so I worried it would emphasise that area, but actually it seems quite flattering.

I'm 5ft 10, size 14/16 and have the hush one which I love

CountFosco · 30/03/2018 07:46

On a tall pear I bet you looked great! A ruched skirt can be really good at showing off a fantastic waist hip ratio. Keep your top tucked in and wear a nice belt and you'll look amazing.

keepmoving · 30/03/2018 07:50

Feel inspired to try one as a fellow tall Hourglass size 14/16. What do you wear with it?

keepmoving · 30/03/2018 08:55

I killed the thread Confused

greathat · 30/03/2018 09:27

Maybe she didn't wear anything with it and didn't want to admit it

keepmoving · 30/03/2018 09:28

Didn't think of that! Grin

Ollivander84 · 30/03/2018 11:05

I just wear a plain ish top, not tucked in as I'm conscious of my stomach. Something like this which is quite fitted on me and I'm tall/long body
https://www.seasaltcornwall.co.uk/clothing/tops/t-shirts-tops/cousin-jinny-organic-cotton-t-shirt-topbeanspot_sailor.htm

Or a v neck grey jersey top, yesterday I had an oversized black/white striped top over a tighter cami

goose1964 · 30/03/2018 16:31

I had to look up a ruched skirt online, I now want one but it needs to be knee length on a leggy 5' 7 size 18. I looked at the hush one but it's like a belt

RooKangaroo · 30/03/2018 21:03

"Maybe she didn't wear anything with it and didn't want to admit it"

How did you know??! Grin

I admit I wasn't brave enough to wear my top tucked in. Worried I look pregnant if I do that!

I wore a bright blue top. Not loose, but not fitted, if that makes sense. It's got a hi-lo hem, so the front is short-ish.

I need to work up to tucking a top in!

RooKangaroo · 30/03/2018 21:05

@Ollivander84, agreed, a ruched skirt would look great with a striped top. Might need to put an outfit like that together!

I don’t own a ruched skirt but I wear tight jersey minis with black tights and I’m a 16. I have an hourglass shape with a big, toned bum and big thighs - I think thick is the word Wink and imo if you got it, flaunt it! Im not saying go full nicki minaj at work but you get the idea...

keepmoving · 31/03/2018 09:45

Anyone seen a knee length one, hush and even baujken are above the knee. Too old for minis

RooKangaroo · 01/04/2018 13:30

@keepmoving, The Baukjen one is below the knee on me (I'm 5,9").

Because of the ruching you can wear it long and short and adjust it as you want. As it's longest it's just below the knee for me. I wear it just above the knee as I think that looks better on me.
