Hi, some family members are going to China for 2 weeks, have asked me what might I like brought back, is there anything I should ask for? I'm short & size 8 but fashion wouldn't be their strong point but shoes uk 4.5 or makeup/skincare might be worth a chance, any recommendations? Many Thanks

Pearls are veerrrry cheap there. If you like them that's what I'd go for. Silk can also be quite cheap, but harder to specify what you want with something like that. It's been years since I've been to China but from what know a huge proportion of their skincare has skin lightening agents in - so I personally would avoid skincare all together (I remember spending ages trying to find a deodorant without lightening agents in it! I think I was so smelly in the end I just got one with bleach in it).

Silk scarves were really good n also purses. I bought some jade jewellery n some show pieces / buddha statues for souvenirs n also to gift others.

Chinese liquid eyeliner is the best and cheap as chips.

I bought pearls and a beautiful silk knitted vest. Lusted over a silk duvet but it was too expensive for my budget .

If you are against animal testing, do not buy any cosmetics in China as they have to be tested on animals by law.

So even a brand like say NARS or MAC that don't test on animals in Europe / rest of world, if they wish to be sold in China. The law states they must be tested independently by a third party lab, and yes, tested on animals.

My family lived in China for a long time, silk and pearls are your best bet. Be parepared to haggle as well, if you aren't happy with the price, walk away. Haggling with Chinese traders is an art form and they see tourists coming a mile off

I still regret not buying a silk duvet, Trumpton. We saw them being made in a silk factory.
Agree with PPs. Pearls, silk scarves or jade. Any clothing sizes are impossibly small. I bought a silk slip labelled Large. I am a size 10. Hmm
