Help! can I dye over highlighted hair?

I’ve just come back from the hairdresser’s with some VERY orange highlights in my naturally dark hair. (I had half a head of foils - light and dark brown- to cover the greys). Can I use a semi permanent dye to darken these?
It looks terrible at the moment!

I would ask the hairdresser to correct. You might end up with a worse colour.

Go back and get them to correct it. Did they use a toner on it?

Thanks- you’re right. I know I should go back but I wondered if I could sort it myself. I don’t think they did use toner- she just painted on two colours and I guess the lighter one was left on a bit long as it’s much more orange than it has been previously.

If its orange then they were maybe not left on long enough. I wonder if a purple toning shampoo would help it look less brassy

Don't put a dye on it, it could be disastrous - speaking from unfortunate experience here.

Get a violet toner, Blonde London or Scott Cornwell are really good. They go on like a deep conditioning treatment and will definitely tone down the orange.

I wouldn't bother with violet shampoo, they won't change the tone significantly, they are more for upkeep of cool tone colour.

Definately go back and ask for it to be corrected if you are unhappy with it. Sounds like it possibly wasn’t lifted enough past the ‘red, orange’ stage. A toner may help the brassy tones but depending how ‘orange’ it is it may need to be reapplied. I wouldn’t mess around with it myself, could end up looking worse. Plus if you paid for a service you are unhappy with, any reputable hair dresser would be happy to correct this for you.
