My foundation never stays put?

TakeMeToTheFresh · 19/03/2018 15:16

Normal skin, not greasy or dry etc

I use EsteƩ Lauder Double Wear

The foundation never stays on?

I remember using it years ago and it never strayed from my face.

It's my favourite, I've never not bought it again.

Just wondering what I could use underneath to help it stay put?

I've tried Benefit primer, and Urban Decay spray on thingy. Both didn't do anything.

I've heard Smashbox primer (clear bottle), is the answer?

Do you use a powder to set it? (Ie on top of the foundation, not under it).

TakeMeToTheFresh · 19/03/2018 15:22

I do not use a powder, no.

I always thought a powder would make foundations look less fresh/dewy? Too cakey etc?

If you can afford it I highly recommend these by Charlotte Tilbury
www.charlottetilbury.com/uk/products/makeup/face/powder.html

They are very lightweight so no risk of cakeyness and keep the foundation in place brilliantly.

IMO, you really need something like this that goes on top of the foundation. Primers etc can make foundation apply more smoothly but won’t keep it in place.

Ok so what you’re looking for in a primer is a high glycerin content as this helps the make up stick. This is going to sound mad but Nivea for Men post shave balm is the best thing out there and it’s cheap. Seriously. Google it if you’re sceptical as there are so many good reviews from women using it as a primer, including Kylie Jenner and whilst that would usually put me off, in this case she’s right!

TroubledLichen · 19/03/2018 15:32

And yes second advice to use a lightweight powder to ā€˜set’ the foundation

TakeMeToTheFresh · 19/03/2018 15:33

I'm prepared to pay that. My only concern is the reviews seem to suggest it doesn't last very long at all?

I'm also wondering what shade to get... Light would be too pale. But I'm unsure if to purchase medium or dark? I'm a very olive colour with yellow undertones

Wow, Nivea post shave balm? Cheap as chips!
Would that hold the foundation in place or just make it easier to apply?

They've changed the formula for Double Wear recently and now it has far less staying power. It may just be that tbh. But I do second the Nivea post shave balm, it's great as primer.

I’m surprised at that. I probably only go through about 1.5 of these a year max despite using it every day. As with a lot of powder products, towards the end there will be no powder left in the middle but I just run my brush around the edge and it’s good to go.

It’s hard to advise on shade without seeing your skin but someone in the reviews for the medium one said it would work best for those with olive tones. They have a shop in Covent Garden if you’re anywhere near there and I think they do it at some of the John Lewis shops too if you’ve got one nearby.

Amazingly the Nivea post shave balm really does hold it in place. It contains more glycerin (essentially the sticky stuff) than most primers which is why it works so well. I switched from Laura Mercier a couple of years ago and have never looked back.

TakeMeToTheFresh · 19/03/2018 18:40

Speedy I've bought the Medium shade!

Can't wait to try it and apparently the medium is very olivey green so thank you so much Thanks

Trouble You have sold it to me! But is it the sensitive one or the original? There seems to be a few versions

Good luck. I hope it works for you.

The make up artist I had for my wedding swore by it and I’ve been hooked since.

TroubledLichen · 19/03/2018 19:28

Re Nivea, I go for the sensitive; DH uses it so I don’t even have to buy it! Grin

Smashbox primer is widely used but a few years ago I was pointed to a product which is virtually identical, a fraction of the price and have used it ever since. It's bloody brilliant. Slides on like silk and really holds my foundation in place all day (I too use EL Double Wear). It's Lanacane Anti Chafing gel, and lots of people seem to use it as primer. I also use the tiniest bit of banana powder on top of the foundation (and I mean a teeny tiny amount) and top off with a matte fixing spray. My makeup looks the same when I take it off at night as when I put it on in the morning.

TakeMeToTheFresh · 29/03/2018 15:54

Magnet I'll have to give the anti chaffing gel a try!

Regarding the banana powder, what is that? I've never heard of it

OP posts:
MagnetarMum · 29/03/2018 17:37

TakeMe: It's essentially a yellow toned setting powder. It's a loose powder that gives my skin a really healthy non-chalky glow. Apparently some people use it for conturing (I didn't even know that till I just Googled it) but can't see how that would work. It's just really nice, light, non-chalky white powder.

TakeMeToTheFresh · 29/03/2018 19:49

Magnem It sounds perfect for me, where can I buy it?!

I think you can get it on Amazon, but mine came from my daughter in Spain from Primor (not sure if we have those here?)
