I'm getting married in July. First time - very small registry office, family only day. I'm 48, 5 foot 8, size 8. Any opinions on these dresses greatly appreciated, along with any other similar suggestions please 😀.

Your first link doesn't work. The second is a lovely dress, but it's too see-through, imo, to be right for a wessing dress unless you were getting married on a beach. Nothing to do with your age though.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 19/03/2018 14:34

That's pretty much what my mother said.

Does this work? I'm useless at links.

I'm not mad keen on the Monsoon dress - I think it might end up looking a bit MOTB on anyone over 25

What's your budget?

Twogoround · 19/03/2018 14:40

Go to wedding dress and try on .
Unless you are use to wearing formal dresses you won't have a clue as to what suits you. Whst you love wearing and what is suitable for your wedding .
So and try in the whole shop.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 19/03/2018 14:45

No specific budget .... I suppose about £500 if that's realistic. I've not looked in any shops, just on line, and I don't really have a clue. Until last week it was just going to be DP, me and a couple of witnesses, until my mother (recently widowed) said she'd like to be there. I was just going to wear something I've already got ....

Ok thank you, I guess I'll have to do some trying on.

I got married in my 40s. I wore a Ghost dress. Anyway have a look at this article. Happy hunting!

sorry for epic link...

Lobsterquadrille2 · 19/03/2018 14:56

Thank you for the links! You have both linked the Phase Eight Madalyn dress .... gives me some ideas anyway. I never expected to get married so I really haven't a clue.

Love the phase eight dress. Would look stunning on a size 8 figure!

OlennasWimple · 19/03/2018 15:00

If you're put off by a "proper" wedding dress shop, could you go to a big John Lewis and try on lots of dresses there? Either on your own or with the personal shopper service?

Even if you don't find "the one", you might find a dress in the right shape even if it's the wrong colour. Then when you look online again you'll have a better idea of what suits you, what makes you feel comfortable etc etc

Oh, and congratulations!

There's a really good Wedding forum on Mumsnet. Lots of good advice on choosing a dress and people will ( very kindly ) critic your dress if you want.
Someone put an excellent post up as to why going real life wedding dress shopping is worthwhile and very different to normal shopping ( no one expects you to buy anything being the main one).
Having said that this dress from Quiz looks good in real life

Have a look at BHLDN.com. Gorgeous dresses in lots of different styles. If you want to be more informal click the little white dresses section.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 19/03/2018 15:06

Ah, thank you. I didn't realise there was a wedding forum. Ok, I've conceded that I'll have to go shopping. I was hoping to see something on line, buy it and avoid all of that.
It'll be nice and distracting for my mother anyway!
