4 day trip capsule wardrobe help please

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 18/03/2018 14:38

I want a new start with my holiday wardrobe but don’t want to spend a fortune. Can you help me with a capsule wardrobe for a 4 day hot trip please? Clothes and accessories. I’d appreciate actual links to currently available items as
Whenever I read about capsule packing it talks about types of things which I can then never find in the shops. This 4 day wardrobe would then form the basis of an expanded capsule for longer trips in the summer.
I am 5’3, an ample size 14, fairly large boobs, not keen on pinks and pastels, prefer autumnal colours which adds to the challenge for summer clothes.
I know you guys are far better at these things than I am, any help much appreciated.

Yep, hang on, let me do some research.....

mimibunz · 18/03/2018 16:43

What’s your budget? Do you want super casual or smart or a combination?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/03/2018 16:52

Beach? City?

I did a warm city break last summer and lived in denim shorts and a cami top in the day, and sleeveless jersey dresses and a demin jacket in the evenings.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/03/2018 16:52

denim!

8FencingWire · 18/03/2018 16:55

2 lots of bikinis/beachwear
2 beach dresses
1 skirt, 1pair of trousers, 3 tshirts (one long sleeved) and one light jumper.
Flip flops
A pair of socks for the plane.

That’s all I ever take.

I know this is a bit OTT but i really works for me, to stat by writing a list of outfits required. In a spreadsheet, so a column for each type of thing required, top, bottoms, underwear, accessories, shoes ...

First time through each row, it's just general terms so top1, trousers1, plus anything special say rainproof overcoat, or shoes i can walk in. Swimsuits, ski gear etc. Then fill up with identified pieces, spread them out over the bed or something so you can see what goes with what. Ideally, have colours and style done so eventually, you only have clothes you love in your own colour palette. How to ring the changes with essentially the same dress with different accessories. Just make sure you are prepared for disasters, like spilling something on the trousers. You probably need two pairs, rather than just one. One to wear and one for spare..

This shows you what you need to get, say new trousers and/or things you would like to add. Make sure you start with plenty of time, to try everything on in outfits, spot anything that needs mending, or cleaning, or is more threadbare than you expected.

Now you are ready to work out how to make savings, if you take those trousers, you have enough tops to go. Just need one More pair of dressier evening trousers, strappy sandals and you are done. Plus no need to think what shall i wear on holiday, its all planned.

Enjoy.

The more times you do this, the easier to becomes. I leave everything out in the spare room, add or take away as required. If you travel a lot, get a spare set of toiletries, buy new as you get to the last say quarter to build up your stock. Night before, put everything into the case, add toothbrush the next morning, do it up and you are ready. Spare undies in your hand baggage if you are flying..sorted.

Hi thanks for all the responses. I’m looking for casual which can be dressed up a bit if necessary. Mix of sightseeing and beach and eating out (smarter than fast food but more casual than Michelin! ) budget... I would say average, ie M&S prices rather than Harvey Nics. I do ‘get’ the idea of a capsule wardrobe, I just can’t find things that I like to make it work for my age/shape/colours/price range.

I like things like this dress. It's jersey so won't be all creased in your case. Wear it with sandals for sightseeing, put on some lovely jewelery and smarter sandals / shoes to eat out in the evening

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 18/03/2018 21:27

Jersey dresses are great, thank you for The reminder. The neckline is too high on that particular one, not that I want to show much cleavage but prefer a lower neckline. But the idea of casual to night works well with those dresss

Very useful @FinallyHere thank you. Appreciate the links thanks @Itscurtainsforyou - although the first 2 don’t work? I love the next shorts and dress.
Not so keen on patterned trousers, like the khaki ones. I have lots of vests - so useful!!

DelphiniumBlue · 18/03/2018 22:36

Next have a sleeveless linen shift in lots of colours and patterns . I had 2 last year, in my usual size they are slightly loose, which is great when its hot.

Itscurtainsforyou · 18/03/2018 22:39

That's annoying!

Would it help to figure out the kind of thing you want, e.g. 2xshorts, 2xdresses etc?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 18/03/2018 22:54

Yes I usually would take a couple of dresses, a couple of pairs of shorts and a couple of pairs of crop trousers. Plus mix and match t-shirts/vests/tops and a jacket and or cardigan. But tend to wear the same old things so fancy starting again, hence keeping it compact

OP posts:
RockingMyFiftiesNot · 18/03/2018 22:59

@DelphiniumBlue love those shift dresses thank you. I need to have a good look through Next - I stopped looking there a few years back as everything seemed to be geared towards young, tall and slim ... but I kind lots of the Next items linked to on this thread.

Not seen irl but would the Hush beach dress work?

abigboydidit · 19/03/2018 21:58

I had 4 days in Rome but it wasn't hot hot. I had 3 jersey dresses from Boden and wore them with memory foam trainers for sightseeing during the day (totally best advice ever. Thank you Mumsnet!) and then nice sandals and chunky necklace at night. I also took a pair of lightweight trousers and tops to layer for travelling. Have a lovely time!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 19/03/2018 22:08

Hush beach dress might work, might be a bit snug round my ample hips. Am thinking jersey or linen dresses might be the way to go, forget about shorts, maybe travel in cropped trousers. Thanks for all the suggestions

OP posts:
Soyalatteforme · 20/03/2018 07:50

This is a good dress which you could wear during the day and dress up in the eve.

How about this OP?
If you scroll down you'll see the clothes suggested, links to them, and outfits put together. If you don't like the links, you can find similar in most shops.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 21/03/2018 14:29

Thank you so much all - some great ideas and that link is particularly helpful @MartagonLilies.
I’ve been trying to find a lightweight cardigan, not seen anything I like but the idea of a linen shirt instead is a good one. Thanks again
