Red Hair Dye Not Sticking

I've been a dyed blonde for years and years. Decided a change was due, and went red in January. Went to a salon, they used a primer or something (can't think of the exact name) before putting the dye on, as said it might struggle to take hold because of the blonde.

I love the colour, but it just isn't holding. Within a week it has gone from a gorgeous deep rich red to an almost orangey/pink colour. I've basically been dying it every 2 weeks since January, and hoped that it would take hold more and more, but it hasn't. Have read that red dye is the hardest to stick, and I know that having bleached hair doesn't help, but when I did this once before (about 10 years ago), I don't remember such a problem.

Anyway, just looking for advice. Is there any way of making the red stay put, or should I just look to go back to blonde. Can't be doing with dying my hair every week and a half/2 weeks, it's driving me mad!

If I go back blonde, what is the best way to do this from red?

If you are dyeing it every two weeks have you ever been back to the salon?

They should be able to prime it again and re-dye.

Unfortunately red fades very very quickly. What I would do is invest in something like a crazy colour and mix it with your usual shampoo and that should keep the colour topped up but starting from blonde I would expect to need it done a couple of times in the salon. The salon probably would have done for free after a couple of weeks but not so sure now.

When I was training I did this to a client and it was an awful patchy mess 10 days later. Perseverance is key.

It will also be a nightmare to go back blonde I'm afraid.

I didn't go back to the salon no. From what I read it sounded as if it was quite a usual thing to happen, so I guess I just assumed they wouldn't do anything.

I know the last time I was red (as I said, at least 10 years ago!), I ended up getting bored and going a rich brown colour for quite a while. I then went back to blonde by having hair highlighted, and them adding a few more each time before finally going blonde all over. Was hoping to avoid this if possible!

I almost put in my previous msg you would probably have to go brown to go back blonde.

Give the salon a ring and explain, see what they suggest. They would expect it to fade but not to the point of your blonde coming back through. That to me suggests it need pre-pigmenting again as it didn't work the first time (which can happen).

Manic panic veg dye, dark pillow cases.

I have bleached blonde hair and decided to put auburn on it, didnt take first time so put more on and it went very dark red, so panicked and put more bleach highlights in
It looks fine now, but need a few me highlights in ,doing it tonight, couldnt stand it so dark.i think that is the only solution,

Wash twice a week (not every day) if you can, use a gentle shampoo without sulfates (strips the red out immediately) and wash with cool water. Also, mix a semi-permantent veg red dye in with your conditioner or use Revlon colour ball and leave conditioner in your hair for 10 mins after washing, then rinse.

I've been dyeing my hair red for 15 years and this is the sum total of my knowledge.

Alternatively, use henna. On blonde hair it would be RED but it would look natural and if you use the BAQ stuff (try Soil Association or Hennaboy) the stuff will not budge.

Lovemy, how do you manage doing highlights at home? I am too old for brown hair that is blocky and no pennies for a salon. My hair darkish brown (possibly close to my old natural colour) wild frizzy and curly. It is getting thinner now, not that causes a serious problem too many drugs and reaching 56 combined.

What do you use? I have never used bleach so know little.

Hiya, I'm a hairdresser lovely. Was your hair bleached blonde? Because bleach takes the colour out of hair, in order to re deposit the colour back they need to do a pre pigment treatment on to make the colour take evenly and last better. I would recommend a sulphate free shampoo and conditioner, they are a bit pricey but they do genuinely help the colour hold for longer.

I use a highlighting cap with holes already in it, and just a hook and pull through, have to guess at the back to be honest, but i get a mirror and look at the back through the mirror behind me,
I use Jerome Russel highlighting kit,all comes together in a box, powder, cream peroxide and cap and gloves, plus hook and brush
My hair is mostly grey/white, but must have some dark at the roots
