Sick and tired of thick, dry, frizzy hair - new style needed!

I have thick, medium-long length hair which is naturally wavy. But it just has no shape and I rarely have time to style it. So the only thing that seems to make it look half decent is straightening it. But even then it is just so thick and dry and lacking shape.

I'm getting it cut next week but I'm not sure what style to go for. The only thing I'm certain of is I don't want it too short. Can anyone advise any styles which will make my hair look nice again?

Watching with interest as your hair sounds the same as mine. Been having it highlighted for years which I don’t think has helped so going to get it coloured darker and cut next week. Don’t know what I would do without my straighteners!

My hairdresser did something new

Sort of a bob on top but loads of layers in the underneath bit so it isn't so full

@Whereisme it's so frustrating isn't it! I just want to be one of those people who have constantly perfect looking hair! I used to dye mine black all the time. I stopped that a few years back but seems like I have a lot of build up, most of it seems to be out now though. It's the frizziness I'm struggling with

@KatyMac sounds like something that would work! Is there a Google pic that shows something similar to your hairstyle now?

My hair is the same as yours. A few days ago I went to my hairdresser and said I wanted a bob of some sort. I said I didn’t want a frumpy mumsy look, just something polished and professional. I got a ‘shaggy’ inverted bob, and I love it!! Problem solved with half the frizz. Also, tell your stylist to give you a cut that helps battle frizz. Good luck!

Ah, just read KatyMac! Sounds like what I have.

sportyfool · 10/03/2018 16:33

It's probably curly , have you tried products and not brushing it ?

KatyMac · 10/03/2018 18:12

Not brushing helps

I'm only one week in so I'm still learning - but it's good

zippyswife · 10/03/2018 18:17

My hair sounds like yours OP. I love the sound of katy and mimis.

I have naturally wavy hair, it can be extremely frizzy without the right products. I use a concotion of frizzease serum and their mousse when its damp, then sea salt spray really helps to define waves and take away frizz. I then finish it with some shine spray and hairspray. My hair is so thick that it doesnt get crunchy even though i use loads of product. I tend to use sprays because the more i touch it the frizzier it gets haha. You need some layers cut in but don't let them at you with any thinning scissors because this will make any frizziness or dry feeling worse. Use a good shampoo- i used to use professional loreal or paul mitchell but actually prefer garnier papaya and vanilla milk shampoo and conditioner which i get from savers, its the best one I've used for curly, wavy and thick hair. Makes it so soft.

I have similar hair. I tried an organic 12 week blow-dry a few years ago and have never looked back. Its not straightening as such, more volume and frizz reducing so you keep your natural wave but my hair is now shiny smooth and swishy. I do it every 5/6months or so now and never straighten anymore.

Thanks everyone! Some great suggestions and lots of ideas to look into 😊 hopefully I'll be rid of this mess soon!

Let us know how it goes!

Bugjune · 10/03/2018 23:15

Can you link to that treatment please, Eggs.

Same hair so following with interest! The hairdressers always call their colleagues to come look at how thick my hair is. Would be okay if it wasn't coarse and frizzy too. An inverted bob work for me too, longest layer on the top. If they thin my hair out in any way, shape or form with scissors or razors it's a disaster and a mullet after the first wash. Feels like I have to convince hairdressers I know my hair and have tried most things with it, so annoying. Good luck OP!
