If not the mum bob, then what haircut can I have?

Another poster was on about cutting their hair short recently and was told to avoid a frumpy bob at all costs.
Now here's the dilemma: if your face isn't pixie/elfin/cheekbone/pretty enough for the crop then what do have?
I have fine hair that doesn't grow well and quickly looks tatty when it gets below chin. There's a stubborn middle parting and a high forehead to contend with. It's fairly straight but can be scrunched with product but then tends to flop after a few hours.
Are there other options? Every time I go to the salon I ask for something edgy but I always come out looking the same: with a boring, pristine tidy bob!

Your hair sounds exactly like mine. I’ve gone for an inverted bob, longer at the front, with long layers so it can be made a bit messy/ textured. It still has mumsy potential but it’s the best I can do as my hair is just too tatty if I grow it long now.Sad

Londonlivin · 09/03/2018 20:47

Embrace the bob. If that is how your hair looks best, you’ve got to just go with it. As long as the condition is good, you’ve got the colour right along with good make up and clothes you can rock a bob.

Rathkelter · 09/03/2018 20:47

Sounds interesting mama. Have any slebs got similar hair that you could post a photo of - or even yiur own from.the back? I think my hair looks awful from the back.

Freja Beja Ericsson rocks a range of edgier hairstyles from chin length to longer. Could you work a fringe and maybe a shaggy / layered cut?

Farfel · 09/03/2018 20:56

Fine hair here too. I went from longish to jaw-length bob to this, which I guess is a bob too, but layered and short, and I'm very happy with it. Maybe you could try something like this? (Pic is not me - it's the one I showed the hairdresser)

I have that hair and I added a fringe which looks great for a few hours then separates perfectly but that’s not actually a good look.
The front does not grow so I’m stuck with it for 2 years I reckon.

I’m so sick of bobs but I’m 10kg heavier than when I last had a pixie cut.

mamaduckbone · 09/03/2018 20:59

It’s surprisingly difficult to take a photo of the back of your own head but I’ve had a go...

I also have an inverted bob with a long sweeping fringe and some layers to add to texture to my fine, ratty hair. After experimenting with various styles, this is what I keep coming back to. If it ain't broke etc.

What about some funky colour to add some edge to it?

StickyHandPrintsOnMyFace · 09/03/2018 21:21

Same issue with fine hair, big forehead and middle part. I have a graduated bob, about 1in longer around the face than at the back. Can scrunch and braid for a messy look, or blow dry straight for an Anna Wintour minus the fringe effect. Pretty versatile and realistically, all I can get with my hair.

Rathkelter · 09/03/2018 22:01

The quality of your hair is lovely mama.

tenforthat I found this image of Freja. One word: cheekbones!!
I would love to look like that.

I have a long shaggy bob with balayage - bis like this - so doesn’t really matter if it looks tatty as it’s supposed to be like that!!

What about..

Rathkelter · 09/03/2018 22:19

How do you make it look edgily, purposely, cool messy but not unkempt ceeveevee? That's where I go wrong. If I don't blow dry it, it's flat on top and the ends kind of go a bit fly away, puffy and bulbous.

Rathkelter · 09/03/2018 22:23

There are a few nice ones on there Sheldon. Lots of them have volume on top which I struggle to achieve with my rigid centre parting. Which style did you like?

Thank you rath but it’s really whispy at the front with a horrible cowslick - generally I look better from the backGrin

Mumbob101 · 09/03/2018 22:26

I have just had my long dark hair with a blunt fringe cut into a bob. After lots of Pinterest searching I asked for an a line long bob just below my collar bone with caramel and honey balayage and a middle parting fringe. I also have a high forehead. I was seriously worried about mumbob, hence the user name but love it and it takes 5 years off me (early forties)

Rathkelter · 09/03/2018 22:27

Like these two but not sure of they are a case of styling over cut? Once you're out in the rain would you be back to plain-jane bob?

Ooh mumbob any chance of a photo? Sounds really unusual. I have never loved my hair cuts.

Product - sea salt spray or dry shampoo helps put some texture in. My hair is naturally a bit wavy though

Mumbob101 · 09/03/2018 23:00

I’m sorry I don’t know how to post a picture but I just put messy long bob into Pinterest and picked the pictures with models that had a similar face shape/centre parting to me. I also showed the stylist pictures of bobs I didn’t like! I think the balayage makes a difference to the look and texture as well.

iamasoconfused · 10/03/2018 09:50

Sue Brockman style.

YouWereRight · 10/03/2018 10:03

Surely it's only a mum Bob if it doesn't suit you, or the rest of your look is a bit mum.

Just have the hair cut you like, and feel comfortable with and you'll look good.

Mercurial123 · 10/03/2018 11:23

I have a bob my hair is wavy and I can wear it straight or leave to hair dry. I really like it. I hate the long hair that curls on the bottom which so many people like on here though I find that pretty boring.
