Deliberately wearing colours that don't suit you

Just wondering if anyone else does this if they really like an item of clothing?

I have a newish dress that has mustard tones that don't do my complexion any favours, have so far tried breaking it up with a navy cardigan, and wearing more makeup. Any more tips to help make it work? Cut/print size work well on me.

I have been tempted before but always regret it, tbh. For example, sludgy olive / mustard / khaki tones make my skin look awful, which is a shame as I kind of like khaki.

Maybe a scarf in a more flattering colour near the face? Like, I’d put a clear colour like white or blue or black, which flatters my skin tone more.

You could dye it a darker colour?

Kochicoo · 08/03/2018 09:13

Agree with other pp, try a scarf. I do that.

MrsPeacockDidIt · 08/03/2018 09:56

Yes to scarf. I shouldn’t wear black as it does me no favours BUT if I do wear it on top half I avoid anything high necked and try to put a better colour between the black and my face (necklace or scarf).

YY to scarf or big necklace. Bright redish lipstick also looks good with mustard

Thanks, will have a play and take the opportunity to up my accessory game. Have to get maximum wear out of it before my pg bump gets too big for it!

I can't wear blue, near my skin (jeans are OK but not on top half)

I once bought a blue jumper that I loved because it was the perfect fit and texture, so I thought I would wear it anyway. Walked into work and within the first minute someone said "are you OK - you look really ill!" :o

But if it's not that bad, or just one of the colours in the dress, a scarf or big chunky necklace should do it.

Some of the colours that are supposed to suit me, wear me out to look at.
So, l wear some that don’t! Smile

I do this in the autumn, when I feel more drawn to autumnal colours. I know cool toned colours suit me better, but sometimes I just want to dress in warm cosy colours. I can get away with yellow and orange, so long as they're cool toned and bright, and I got a lot of compliments when I wore those colours in the summer. (I'm sure it was just shock that I wasn't wearing black, and it wasn't at the same time!)

I've never thought of trying to use accessories to change the colour near my face. I can't wear any pink or red, I just look ill.

I can see the coloured scarf thing getting a bit hot in summer though...
Unless a neckerchief could do the trick? Grin

I have some thin, grey, jersey cowl type scarves, to go over my black tops. I love to wear black, but unfortunately it makes me look like the corpse bride.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 09/03/2018 17:21

Someone once told me she was able to wear red even though it didn't suit her because she wore a short string of chunky faux pearls and it broke up the colour around her face. Idk, I think yellow would not suit me no matter how many pearls I wore, but if you have a cardigan or jacket in a 'good' colour that could work over something in not such a good colour.
