House of Colour - what am I doing wrong?!

I have lost my fashion mojo & I'm hoping you might be help me rediscover it! I had my colours done a couple of years ago & was diagnosed as a “blue autumn” i.e. my best colours are chocolate brown, chestnut, forest green, olive, teal etc. Before getting my colours done, I used to wear almost all black/grey/ivory but thought I was looking rough, which made sense given the diagnosis from the HoC consultant.

However, even after two years, I haven’t got the hang of dressing my post-black self. I have largely swopped from black to v dark brown for basics & I already had a few olive/forest bits & pieces. But although I can see the colours suit me better (& I love them – my whole house looks like an autumn HoC swatch!), I just don’t feel like “me” wearing them. And tbh I get fewer positive comments from other people than I used to, which is not a big deal to my ego(!) but seems to be the opposite of what other people report after their colour analysis, again perhaps suggesting I’m doing it all wrong!

Does anyone else have this problem? If you have any ideas about how to get my former fashion self back, I’d be interested to hear. I’m almost thinking of falling off the HoC wagon & just digging out my black clothes from under the bed..!

Maybe the answer would be a style day but I don't particularly want to throw more money at the HoC thing, when I'm not convinced it's really helped me much :)

I haven't had my colours done but I believe you are told your best colours to wear often and then others to accessorise with, etc.

Perhaps brown isn't your best colour and you need to be wearing more of the brighter colours - teal, olive? Are orange or mustard on your list as there are loads of that around at the moment.

It would be worth having a look on Pinterest to see if that gives you some inspiration.

Very dark brown is a really difficult colour to wear- whatever your skin tone. I’d get rid of that for starters! :)

I know these aren't necessarily all your colours but look at the range here

I'm a blue autumn (I'm also a HoC consultant, so somewhat biased, but I'm trying to respond purely as a blue autumn person rather than a HoC person!). Anyway, I hate brown, never wear it. I don't feel like me in brown.

I pair my favourite autumn colours - teal, amber, forest green, bright red, chartruse, with navy, charcoal, mole, denim and dark teal as my neutrals. I need to do the opposite of what most autumns do - we are told in a colour class to wear gently toning outfits, but I find I feel better with more contrast and an outfit that is more 'neutral with a splash of colour' than 'look at me I got my colours done'.

I feel like a top to toe autumn 'look' isn't hugely in fashion right now, but certain autumn shades are EVERYWHERE at the moment (mustard, red, some purples) and paired with more sophisticated neutrals they look amazing.

Hope some of that helps, I'm happy to try to explain my wardrobe more. If you want me to PM you a link of my wardrobe pinterest board do let me know.

Google Turtle Doves colour video. It may help you find your colours.

Hi I'm an Autumn who used to wear black all the time. I'm a bright Autumn, not really sure what a blue Autumn is, but think the system my consultant used was different to yours. It took me a while to change my colours but I love them now! Dark brown can be a bit drab, maybe you need to try some richer colours or be more adventurous?

Have a look at this website, it may give you some ideas. And don't go back to black!
