Would super skinny models stop you shopping at...

That particular shop / brand? Massively put off by Zara’s latest offering. Skipping back to next for their similar offerings. Very sad that these women are in the limelight. Know this isn’t a ‘new’ issue, but it’s turned me right off Zara.

No it wouldn’t put me off as I recognise that women come in all shapes and sizes.

BubblesInTheTub · 07/03/2018 11:14

No it wouldn't stop me.

But I also don't think the model is super-skinny. She's slim but not worryingly skinny. I think she looks thinner than she is because of the weird over-sized jeans and T-shirt.

Now those horrible clothes would put me off.

upsideup · 07/03/2018 11:21

That model isnt 'super skinny' though, She looks perfectly healthy. Zara is one of my favourite shops, the size of the models online would make no difference as to whether I liked the clothes.
Can I ask if super fat models would put you off shopping somewhere?

Ummmmgogo · 07/03/2018 11:22

no it doesn't bother me

PNGirl · 07/03/2018 11:51

No. Miserable models do though.

rightknockered · 07/03/2018 11:54

No, has never put me off. It would help if shops featured each item on different sized models, just so you can see how it would look on someone around the same size as yourself. Say, three for each item, so one slim, one medium, and one larger size.

Lifeaback · 07/03/2018 11:59

rightknockered Ive often thought this! I hate being able to gauge if something will look good on my body type because the model has a different shape to me

slug · 07/03/2018 13:17

Hmm...As a larger woman I find the skinny models offputting. Not because of their size, but because I simply cannot visualise the clothes they are wearing in a larger size on a person with boobs, muscular arms and a belly.

Boden is particularly bad for this.

Ofthread · 07/03/2018 15:45

PNGirl! Some woman giving me a 'fuck you' look always makes me want to buy a jumper.

WonderLime · 07/03/2018 15:53

I agree with PPs that she doesn’t look super skinny - just slim.

I think this plays a small part in the obesity crisis in that people can’t gauge what’s healthy anymore. When someone is on the skinnier side there’s an automatic assumption that they must be unhealthy because we’re so used to seeing people carrying additional weight.

LibertyBlue · 07/03/2018 16:09

I don’t think the model looks unhealthy and it’s good for slimmer ladies to be able to envisage what the clothes will look like on. However larger, curvier, more busty/ hippy women don’t generally get that option. Ultimately shops lose out on these sales. I know they do with me.

There is a huge gap in the market. I predict that a fashioncompany will be along soon that serves women - what they want, to flatter their figures and they will use a diverse range of models (age, size, height, colouring) to show them off. And we will literally throw all our money at them!

Why hasn’t this been done yet? Because the fashion & business world is largely controlled by men, who don’t know what women want.

Someone is going to be very rich if they can fill this gap and do it well.

slug · 07/03/2018 16:20

ModCloth are very good for showing their clothes, not just the plus size ones, on a variety of sizes

TossDaily · 07/03/2018 16:24

That Modcloth site makes a refreshing change.

A lot of the vintage-style sites like Lindybop do something similar.

OldJoseph · 07/03/2018 16:26

Clothes models have always been young, tall and skinny, I'm used to it and can usually visualise what the clothes might look on me. I don't generally look at the model herself, just how the clothes look. So I'm not put off those shops.
However, with internet shopping I'm able to read the description of the clothes, look at them off the model and read reviews and I find this much more helpful than just looking at the model.

kinorsam · 07/03/2018 16:51

DD and I have both boggled in astonishment at the mannequins when we've been in H & M. Way, way too thin.

omBreROSE · 07/03/2018 16:58

I Shock that the model in the picture doesn’t seem ‘too’ skinny to most of you.
She can never be described as ‘ too skinny ‘ ( obviously) but that is a woman on the very, very tiny side of slim.
We’ve forgotten what a normal healthy body looks like from big sides.
There are some people walking about that are very poorly- and it has been normalised.
I worked in the fashion industry for over 20 years, believe me. Many models are not just naturally thin.
This becomes particularly evident when they stop and do something else.

omBreROSE · 07/03/2018 16:59

From both sides. Sorry

JuneFromBethesda · 07/03/2018 17:43

I simply cannot visualise the clothes they are wearing in a larger size on a person with boobs, muscular arms and a belly.

I agree with this. Average size models - fine. But I took myself off the mailing list for Me & Em because their models were so very, very thin - absolutely no boobs or hips. I'm a 32G and I couldn't imagine what the clothes would look like on me - not a problem I have with most retailers but this catalogue pissed me off every time it came through the door. So I unsubscribed, and I told them why I was doing it.

MrsPear · 07/03/2018 18:19

No it doesn’t but terrible photos do. Lots of people seem to love massimo Dutti but there are not any garments that are photographed so you can see it whole Confused not buying anything.

skippy67 · 07/03/2018 18:28

No it wouldn't put me off. We're all different shapes and sizes. I hate all this "too thin" bollocks. My dd is always being told she's too thin, and that she must have an eating disorder. Nope, she eats loads, but is just thin!

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 07/03/2018 18:36

Not a popular opinion, but we Brits are generally bigger than other European women. I spend a lot of time there and it's particularly obvious in France that women are smaller boned and the clothes in a lot of shops are cut accordingly. The teenage girls seem to have a different build to many of ours, I don't know whether it's diet related or what.

More than their size, I'm bothered by the age of some of these young women. My own DD was signed by one of the top agencies at fourteen and dropped at fifteen once puberty had taken hold and she went up to a size eight. Emotionally that was very tough.

Ellapaella · 07/03/2018 18:38

It wouldn't stop me.. but I don't think that extremely thin models really make clothes look appealing, I would be much more likely to buy something if I saw it on a model
With more shape and curve.
And I do think that model is very thin. Healthy or not she looks thin. That kind of shape is going to be pretty unattainable to the majority of grown adult women and that is just reality, PC or not.

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/03/2018 18:48

She’s on the slimmer end of the scale but not alarmingly too thin. She just isn’t.

People often tell me I am really slim...I am not. I have put on a stone in the last year and do not look my best. Most have truly lost sight of normal healthy weights.
