Whatever happened to waists?

Is anyone else fed up of all the waistless clothes out there? It seems that fashion is stuck in a boxy, baggy time warp and showing no signs of coming out of it soon. I am pear shaped (of course!) and I seem to spend my life pulling up jeans that are virtually the same width at the hips as they are on the waist; and trying to avoid square shaped tops that make me look like a sack of spuds. And don't get me started on all those bloomin boyfriend coats out there. If I want man shaped clothes I'll go to a mens wear shop!
Is it too much to ask for clothes that are shaped to fit the female form?
Phew! Glad I've got that off my (prominent/booby/woman's) chest.

Anyone have any brand suggestions?

Drives me up the wall when clothes are on mannequins but pinned at the back in the waist. If you think the clothes look nicer nipped in there then flipping well make them that way!

I was one of the posters moaning about waists being too high Flo- this winter every single Boden dress I tried was miles above my waist and I am only 5’4. I am not even an hour glass- just a rectangle with a bit of an indent, and I still struggle to find waists that are small enough in comparison to hips- I wear a lot of belts! However, unlike a lot of you hourglasses, I look awful in wraps (boobs too high) and in peplums!
But anyway, if you need a high waist try Boden!

This is a great thread, I look a stone lighter when something has a waist, it’s literally the only thing I like about my body! I will check our Quiz and Oasis, thanks for the tips.

Boden never ever fit me and I am a very average height and size 10. Waist is always too high, too much material on hips. @Ollivander that dress is lovely on you. If anyone is interested I tried on a very similar one in Zara recently which was a good few inches longer, very flattering (except gapey at the wrap front - easily fixed though with a few stiches or boob tape)

What annoys me is the amount of dresses where the waist sits two inches too high- I am like, 38" 28" 38" and 5'7" but designers seem set on making me look short and dumpy. Two years ago this was absolutely rife but there are loads of dresses around still like that. I think shops are catering more for people who want to cover up their middle.

I don't think I'm particularly long-bodied either. I wear 32" length trousers, same as my husband who is 4" taller.

Yes, or if you do manage to find someting where the waist is in the right place, the neckline is too high. This and this sort of style is also everywhere. Or this

Would this flatter sort of style flatter those of you with a high waist? Because I just look at reams of these dresses and have no idea who they are for.

It has a waist, but my waist is not under my boobs. Look at all the excess material around the models´actual waists. They turn a pear into a... I don´t know what but I would look like I had been trapped inside a five year old´s party dress.

Floisme · 11/03/2018 10:24

Thanks for the Boden tip Tanaqui!

margaritas the waists on those links look roughly in the right place for me but the style is a million miles from what I would wear. And this, in a nutshell, is the reason why I rarely wear dresses now. For some reason, a high waist goes hand in hand with with frilly, lacey or floral, which is just not my style at all.

I think 40s and 50s tailoring is great for hourglasses - and the waist is often in the wrong place for me so might work for some of you! It's harder to find than it used to be but it's still around.

And I know it's been said already but I this is why I practically lived in tube skirts for 4 or 5 years. They find your waist no matter where it is. All hail Vivienne Westwood for creating them. A designer who understands that womens bodies, and even women's waists, are all different - fancy that!

picklemepopcorn · 11/03/2018 10:24

I think the first two would give shape to someone who is straight up and down. The last one is just awful on anyone, I agree.

I do well in an empire line, I have good boobs,no back fat, so a fitted top third with a floaty bottom two thirds works well. I also do well in things that nip in at the waist and skim past my hips and truly enormous thighs.

What I can't wear is anything that stops at the waist- a blouse and skirt, for example. Or a belt. I have to go to hip length at least.

woodhill · 13/03/2018 17:47

I agree about the position of the waist on fuller skirt dresses. My waist is also lower
