Cashmere-Which brands sell the best quality cashmere products?

Having recently bought my first cashmere cardigan from Jaeger, I am now hooked!
I need more (my topshop knitwear is just not cutting it anymore!).
So many different brands are selling cashmere for varying prices which has left me wondering the difference in quality.
Where would you recommend for the softest cashmere?

I have a bit of a cashmere eBay addiction and have discovered:
Pringle = the bomb. Thick, soft and hard wearing.
Brora= same
Edinburgh wool milk =thin and bobbly
Marks and Spencer=same

Basically? You get what you pay for!

Plus, you can machine wash them on cold wool wash, baby shampoo and flat hang. Easy.

neveradullmoment99 · 04/03/2018 21:02

I actually rate HUSH. Beautiful cashmere. Not sure about the summer version. The winter one is so soft and keeps looking lovely. Have washed it a few times, they give you a cashmere comb which i debobble and I wash it in a cashmere non rinse soap and it came out looking like new.

Duchessofealing · 04/03/2018 21:07

Agree you get what you pay for, Brora is amazing and I have sweaters that have lasted years and look like new. I’ve had to take M&S back after one wear as it pilled so badly. Jaegar is a pretty good shout too. I have a Willow London wrap which is lovely, but can’t comment on the jumpers. Chinti and Parker bobbles badly but is thick so if you have the patience to de bobble it is great (in the sale!) Scott and Scott is reasonably thick too so the bobbling isn’t as much of a problem.

I have found tescos F and F cashmere wears and washes well, and have no problems with the m and s too, esp their cardigans. Agree with washing in a machine, I did a wash this am with seven of my stash and they all came out fine. I use a gentle washing liquid and a bit of fabric conditioner on a wool wash. I don't dry it flat, don't have the space but hang on a rack over the bath.

Agree cashmere becomes an addiction, any other wool feels so itchy in comparison!

Lentilbaby · 04/03/2018 21:18

Thanks everyone. I'm all for paying the extra for quality but just wanted some recommendations. Have seen cashmere in AllSaints for example but the quality of their materials can often be rather crap...didn't want to end up paying for the name!
I will check out all of your recommendations and let you know. Glad it's not just me that's addicted! Smile

Oh and thanks for the washing recommendations too. The lady in Jaeger mentioned hand-washing the cardigan......fab, I would have thought it was dry-clean only!

I think the current m and s cashmere is pretty good. No pilling on mine. It has 20% off at the moment too which makes it a steal in comparison to Brora. I don’t think my Jaeger cashmere is any different to my recent m and s cashmere purchases. I’ve been delighted with them.

There are different ply ratings for Cashmere. Gassato is very lightweight and nearly see through. Great for a summer cover up. There is then 2 ply which is medium weight and 4 ply which is weighty!

I have a few Brora items that I have picked up over the years is sales, clearance etc and IMO they are the best. Gorgeous colours, soft, luxurious and I am still wearing them years later. I also love their wrist warmers and treat myself to a pair every winter. I don't think their customer service is always great I feel they can be a bit snooty.

I also like Pure collection. I think they have some lovely designs. I find them very soft not the quality of Brora but still very good IMO. I have always found their customer service really good. I have a number of pieces that I have had for many years and they always wash and dry clean very well. They also have some great sales.

M & S - I have bought 2 cashmere jumpers this year and I have been impressed. Very warm, soft and lovely designs and a great price especially if you can pick them up with a 20% discount. They have washed well and when I needed to exchange sizes customer services were lovely. The 20% promotion had finished but they honoured it for me.

Wyse London - Shock I was very disappointed in the quality of their jumpers especially as they market themselves as top quality. I had also seen an article in a magazine by the owner of Wyse. She was basically giving a rating to other high street cashmere jumpers as if she was an expert, so I had high hopes. I had wanted one for ages and decided this Christmas to ask everyone if I could have money as a present so I could purchase one. I really wanted the Maddy style (black with gold stars). Honestly, it was thin and scratchy and it went straight back. However, I was then given one of their scarves as a birthday present and that cashmere is much softer and better quality.

Tescos F & F - I don't any pieces but when I have looked I am quite impressed. They are not top quality but I think they are pretty good for the money.

As for bobbling, piling - all my cashmere jumpers have done this, some sooner than others. I just use a cashmere comb and problem solved. I think the initial layout is expensive but I have found my cashmere to be an investment and all my pieces have lasted many years.

I love cashmere and struggle to wear any other wool, although merino wool I can tolerate. I love having a mixture of different brands and always looking out for new. I haven't tried Pringle or Jaegar cashmere so I will be going on the search for those brands.

elfofftheshelf · 05/03/2018 09:14

Most of my jumpers are cashmere. Brora are at the top. Absolute quality, last for years. I also like Chinti and Parker - quirky colours and designs and the cashmere lasts without pilling. At the lower price range, I tried White Stuff cashmere this year and it's wearing really well. Treat it as an investment, look after it and they do last (just be careful to put them away clean at the end of the winter and safe from moths!)

Lentilbaby · 05/03/2018 11:59

Thank you so much everyone, I really appreciate you taking the time to get back to me. I'll definitely pick up a cashmere comb too. Can't wait to start shopping! Thanks for you all!

Best of the best , in my opinion, are Johnstons (who’s factories actually manufacture for many other branded cashmere such as Brora) & Shorts who also manufacture their own. I have lots of both but I live in the Borders so am lucky to be able to buy direct from the factories at discount prices.
I’ve had M&S & F& F as well which I think are perfectly good value for the money.

OCSockOrphanage · 05/03/2018 16:14

DOn't forget Uniqlo; it's no longer as good as it once was, but it's at least as good as most of M&S's cashmere. It washes well too, and I debobble mine with a nitcomb (never used in anger, no little ones).

faustina · 05/03/2018 18:25

I have lots of Brora which is great quality (as has already been said) - but I also really rate cashmere from Gap - miles better than Uniqlo, Boden, M and S etc. You can usually find it reduced in the sales around now. Also JCrew isn't bad, but I think it's quite overpriced

extinctspecies · 05/03/2018 18:28

Big fan of Brora.

Treat myself to something from the sale about once every 2 years and they last forever.

I think cheap cashmere is a waste of money. The moths seem to like it better too.

Ofthread · 05/03/2018 18:42

Johnston’s of Elgin are amazing.

Diamonddealeroncemore · 05/03/2018 19:15

I have N Peal cashmere which is lovely and I bought some from Hush which is gorgeous. I’ve also got M&S but you can tell it’s not the same quality. It’s true that you get what you pay for!

theuntameableshrew · 05/03/2018 22:05

I can’t wear Pure cashmere as it itches! Brora is my favourite too

FunshineJen · 24/05/2018 09:53

I just recently bought a cashmere sweater from the cashmere centre as my daughter bought me a pashmina from there and i loved how soft it felt! I have a few nice cashmere items and i'm usually not picky but it really does feel softer than my m&s and pure clothing.

Bejazzled · 24/05/2018 10:47

Uniqlo is good quality for the price, the best I have found though is a small company called Mercy Delta. Their cashmere or silk scarves are just beautiful.
