What is it like to bleach your hair at home?

I’d like to vamp up my hair a bit, especially as Spring is reluctantly hiding around the corner!

Is it hard to bleach your own hair?.... I was thinking all over highlights.

Does anyone do this?

Highlights are harder than they look, as is bleaching/lightening. So much can go wrong. I see the people who try it at home when they come to the salon I train in to get it fixed.

Orange hair or yellow hair with hot roots is one of the most common things to go wrong, followed by splotchy or stripey highlights. It costs a lot more to get it fixed than it does to pay to have it done professionally in the first place because of the amount of time/product needed to correct it.

If you really must do it at home - use a cap instead of foils, there's less potential for it to go wrong and try to get your hands on professional products.

Depends on your natural hair, surely?

I'm a suicide blonde, but I have naturally fair, streaky hair, so my home dye job is pretty easy to do and look good because I'm basically enhancing what is there already, not trying to create something from scratch IYSWIM

Not sure what a suicide blonde is?

I’m fair haired with natural blonde tips from the sunlight, it goes darker as it gets closer to the roof but still only light brown.

"Dyed by my own hand" Wink

Your hair sounds similar to mine.

I find that if I follow the instructions for all over dye, I get highlights anyway because bits of my hair are already lighter than others. I really recommend getting a brush (I think Superdrug have them for a couple of quid) so that you can get right down to your roots

so boring and long winded!! i can do it to a very nice effect and have done for about 3-4 years. however i now have a baby and don't have the time or the energy! you need to do your research and also don't be too precious about your hair as even if it goes wrong it will grow back. if you are the type to cry rather than make the best of t don't go there!

Iminthecclubnow · 04/03/2018 21:48

Oh, I was going to say do a sort of ombre/balyage thing as that is easier than highlights but I see you already have lighter ends.

I have bleached my dyed dark hair fairly successfully before with an ombre thing. I had to do it twice and use a strong bleach. It was orange at first and then went more blonde when I did it again and used a toner. I'm not sure, my hair sounds very different to yours, but you can bleach your hair at home! I used the Jerome Russel stuff, the full on bleach!

I love Brad Mondo. My daughter barred me from watching DIY bleaching on YouTube because I sit there with my hands over my eyes muttering things like "no." and "Why? Why is she doing that? Her poor hair."

Even the tutorials where they claim their hair turned out perfectly makes me cringe. They cannot possibly have intended it to be so yellow and fried, surely? I don't think I've ever seen a good home lightening job.

I've just checked that Jerome Russel kit out. They say they only do 30 and 40 vol peroxide on their website? That cannot be right surely? It says in their tutorials you can do root touch ups, so they must do a 20 vol or lower?
