My 10 year old dd1 is starting to get a few blemishes as well as her skin getting very dry around her cheeks and nose and a bit oliy on her t zone so shes wanting to start introducing some more steps to her skincare routine.
Does anyone have any reccomendations of skincare brands or products that are gentle good for children?
What do your children of this age do?

Nothing apart from a dab with a flannel if I nag them! And a Simple facial wipe on high days and holidays.
But seriously your post is really thought provoking and makes me wonder about introducing some gentle, proper skincare such as micellar water and a very light SPF moisturiser. I always wish my mum had told me about moisturiser...

DS1 is 12 now and I find Liz Earle suits his skin as it's fairly fuss-free. He uses flannels rather than the muslin cloths and his skin is definitely clearer and brighter for it (he has an oily nose and cheeks and was beginning to form blackheads and little raised spots as he's hit puberty).

I've always believed that if you teach them from a young age to take care of their skin it'll stay with them forever. For the first few weeks I'd do it with him and taught him how and why; 12 year olds don't generally care about skincare but it's important to teach them and show them in detail. My Mum never did and as a result I've had to teach myself.

My DD 11 uses Neutrogena hydro boost cleansing gel ( I purchased this for myself but passed it on to her)
DD also has a mini bottle of garnier micellar water to hand if she wants to use it now she's experimenting with make up.

DS 12 uses Murad anti bacterial facewash because he does get a few spots now and again and this gets rid of them overnight.

My daughter started using Clarins cleansing water when she was about 12. She has a really good skin care routine now and she's 21. I think it's so important.

But at 10, how about Boots No 7 cleansing wipes?

Thankyou, I will look at Liz earle stuff. I didnt bother untill I got to my late teens/ 20's either and damage had already been done, I would love to help my children get into the habit of taking care of their skin while their still young. DD is into makeup and all my skincare stuff so it was something she mentioned and seems to be interested in anyway but anyone I have asked irl has just said shes too young to be doing or worrying about any of that and I should just let her be a child so I'm glad I'm not the only mum wanting to look after my kids skin.

My 10 year old DD1 still needs to be nagged to wash regularly and she still doesn't use soap except to wash her hands. I am in my 40s and don't know what micellar water is (and I'm a biochemist). I would be very reluctant to start a child on the treadmill of thinking it is necessary to do more than use plain water (with possibly some soap) to clean themselves.

LinoleumBlownapart · 04/03/2018 12:04

Dove soap fixed the few blemishes that my dd started to get, she's 12. It didn't dry out her skin. She will occasionally use a bit of moisturizer if she's been swimming but mostly just a wash. Small blemishes are not a problem.

TheIblisHasspoken · 04/03/2018 12:27

My children (8months, 3yrs & 7yrs) all use moisturiser, older ones micella water and spf. I'm trying to get them used to it from an early age and just get them into the habit. We use couple of different products, but mainly Aveeno or Dr. Organics (any Holland & Barrett stock them) because they don't have Parebens or SLS in them. I think the Koreans culture of skin care of amazing as they get their children used to it from a very early age, I believe that Koreans are said to have the best skin in the world!!!

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/03/2018 14:47

I was using a full cream cleanser, tone, moisturise routine at 10.

There’s nothing to stop her using an oil cleanser like grape seed oil and putting sunblock on her face and neck daily. It would set her in good habits.

I know some are against daily spf for kids because of vitamin d synthesis but you don’t make it at all October to March, you can get it from diet and when they calculate how much early humans made they realised we were naked back then. You’d have to walk around naked all summer to make enough for the winter.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/03/2018 15:30

I get the point of moisturiser if a child has dry skin, but cleanser is for taking off makeup so why would a 10 year old need that?

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/03/2018 15:47

I get rashes off soap and face wash so back then it was cleansing milk or cream.

Tantpoke · 04/03/2018 15:49

Its not for taking off make up its for cleansing skin from everyday sweat, grime, oil and dirt which can cause spots and dry skin etc

OverTheMountain42 · 04/03/2018 15:53

I started using the child's farm moisturiser for my own face.

The tea tree in it helps keep the spots at bay and it's a nice light moisturiser after washing with soap. I do the same for my son's face, he's 4 though so a little different but the basics are there.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/03/2018 16:07

"Its not for taking off make up its for cleansing skin from everyday sweat, grime, oil and dirt which can cause spots and dry skin etc"

You're describing any kind of face washing there. Cleanser is for talking off makeup surely?
I don't see the need unless you wear makeup as the face will be washed in the morning.

suchatiredbunny · 04/03/2018 16:25

I started my DD with the Amie range (in Waitrose or they have a website) as it's very gentle and was made for young skins. She uses the exfoliating wash and the rose moisturiser but also likes Liz Earle for taking make up off (she's 13, doesn't wear much). She's actually not that fussed about whether she has spots or not.......

.....unlike her big brother who would slap cow poo on his face if he thought it would help. He uses Fresh Farmacy soap from Lush, he also likes the neutrogena face wash/mask, and has Epiduo from the Dr. He uses Avene skin recovery cream to moisturise as the dr stuff can be drying.

Ollivander84 · 05/03/2018 11:10

Gwen - cleanser to me just means face wash/lotion cleanser etc not necessarily soap or makeup remover
Soap on face isn't always great especially if sensitive skin, so soap free wash can be better. I use a lotion one as my skin prefers it, whether I have makeup on or not

Chienrouge · 05/03/2018 11:12

I don’t wear make up and I use cleanser to wash my face. Soap is drying (for me).

WhereAreWeNow · 05/03/2018 15:23

My DD is 10 and has to be nagged to let me near her with a damp flannel! She's got perfect peachy skin Envy but if/when she starts to get spots (I was probably about 11 when my skin went from peachy loveliness to teenage, hormonal horror show) I think I'd give her La Roche Posay Effaclar cleansing gel or cream (to use with a flannel) and Effaclar cream.

Tantpoke · 05/03/2018 15:48

gwen yes I totally see what you mean, my DD only uses face wash not a cleanser.
The micellar water is for taking off her lipstick and eyeshadow as she wont be needing foundation for a good while I hope.

Tantpoke · 05/03/2018 16:02

but I like Olli see everything incl facewash, lotion, micellar water, balm as a cleanser per se, as you say any kind of face washing.

KakunaRattata · 05/03/2018 16:08

Can I jump in op? Sorry! Ds is 13 and getting spots and blackheads. I bought him a charcoal face wash but he's clearly not using it. He has olive skin from his dad and it's very oily, what routine should I get him in to? My skin is completely different to his. He's not wearing makeup btw!

Butterfly1975 · 05/03/2018 16:49

My DD (10) has reacted to every cleanser we've tried by coming out in little spots (she doesn't normally have any spots at all yet) The only thing so far that doesn't do this is the Waitrose Pure range and even then we only use a few times a week.

Might try her with Liz Earle though as recommended above....

The Childs Farm sensitive moisturiser is amazing!! I bought for my DD but its sorted out all my dry skin too.
