Alternative to White Stuff? It's gone so downhill!

Having lost some weight, I'm looking for new clothes. I used to love White Stuff but I think their recent collections are so boring! Please, any suggestions of other brands where I can try things on. I don't have to be too poshed up for work, so WS has been good for me up until now. Snowy wastes of Edinburgh.

I used to like white stuff but actually think it aged me prematurely! Most people in there are older than me (I'm nearly 40). Seasalt is even older. It's annoying as someone who knew I used to like it bought me a voucher for Christmas and now I can't find anything I like at it. The prints scream "middle aged middle class woman with no style".

Squ1ggle · 04/03/2018 08:13

@GrannyGrissle what is the sizing like on Brakeburn stuff?

MaybeDoctor · 04/03/2018 08:24

I like Seasalt in principle, but the colours are so dull...

Have a look at my ‘lovely fabrics’ thread, if interested.

Have you looked at www.weirdfish.co.uk/?

I’m so glad to see this thread. I have recently lost 7 stone, now don’t get me wrong I’m still fat ( size 18/20) but so much better than I was. Anyway when I-started my weight loss I couldn’t stop thinking of all the lovely trendy clothes I’d get. I used to think slim people had it easy with buying good quality clothing. While I’m not thin as I say I now realise everyone struggles and it’s the companies cutting corners that’s the problem. What do people think of mint velvet? I can fit in their jeans but as I’m broad at the top I struggle with all tops but I’d really love a fantastic pair of jeans having not worn any for over 15 years.

BlueLego · 04/03/2018 09:23

I agree, I used to really like WS... in my 20s! They used to have some lovely sleeveless knitted tunics.

I like plain stuff so the only thing I buy from there now is their summer vests, which wash well.

I still like FF, but again only certain things such as their jeans. All of their tops are really shapeless Confused

I work outdoors so most of my clothes are from Sherpa and Patagonia. Both of which have some nice smart/casual clothes and good quality. Both ethical companies too.

BlueLego · 04/03/2018 09:27

tayto I’m not overweight, but I’ve always though that if I was I’d dress in the strega type clothing. It’s lots of layers and uneven hemlines.

SukiTheDog · 04/03/2018 12:18

@BlueLego, I agree with the shapelessness issue. I look like a sack of spuds in their stuff. I think it’s all cheap materials and cheaply made.

BlueLego · 04/03/2018 13:03

Yeah suki even their jumpers do a weird flare out thing at the bottom

Gingefringe · 04/03/2018 13:07

Jack Wills have a good selection at the moment if you look past the hoodies and tracksuit bottoms. Their quality is excellent.

TeaMeBasil · 04/03/2018 13:18

What about Mint Velvet, they've had a bit of a turnaround recently, some much more wearable clothes than they used to have. Still a few OTT bits but I've bought some lovely clothes from them recently.

haventkilledtheorchidyet · 04/03/2018 14:48

Gingefringe not sure my daughter would like me shopping there! I agree their quality is good though, clothes seem indestructible!

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, I'd love a Massimo Dutti in Edinburgh! Will look into all the others.

Keep the ideas coming, it sounds like this is a common problem!!

tayto, I know! I thought once I was slimmer I'd love shopping!

I've always thought White Stuff was quite frumpy just like SeaSalt & that line in debenhams.

FatFace is so much better.

UsernameInvalid66 · 04/03/2018 15:46

i was going to say Mantaray but someone got there before me. They are doing some nice bright colours at the moment - if I hadn't sworn off new clothes I would be treating myself to a few things from the blue and yellow range.

DottyDotts · 04/03/2018 18:20

Buy second hand White Stuff off eBay. I do and it's the items from about 10 years ago I buy
